Sascha won a total of five singles titles in the current year. He thus increased his title tally to 18 singles tournaments won on the ATP Tour, won his Masters titles number four and five in Madrid and Cincinnati, and also secured the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

At the ATP Finals, the German, who last week in Paris still looked visibly tired from the long season with a total of 72 completed singles (57 wins, 15 losses), convinced in the preliminary round with two straight 2-0 wins over Matteo Berrettini and Hubert Hurkacz.
