Will Marterer win his 5th Wimbledon match in a row?
Just a week ago, Maximilian Marterer was facing his first qualifying match at the Wimbledon Championships 2023. Now, on Wednesday, the 28-year-old from Nuremberg is even suddenly being touted as the favourite in his second-round match on the hallowed grass in London. The number 170 in the world rankings has already celebrated four victories in a row in the English capital. The fifth success, combined with a first-time entry into the third round of Wimbledon, is now to follow.
The chances are actually not bad, because after the four-set win against Borna Gojo, lower betting odds are also offered before the match between Marterer and Mmoh on the tip in favour of the German. The background to this is that the US American only made it into the main draw as a lucky loser, but was able to surprise the Canadian world class player Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets at the start of the tournament.
However, with regard to the Marterer vs. Mmoh prediction, it must be taken into account that Auger-Aliassime played his first match on grass this season and did not even come close to his normal form.
So how much was the victory of the 25-year-old American of choice worth? In any case, we expect a close duel between two very good servers on Wednesday, which may also go into a tie-break or two. Four or even five sets also seem to be within the realms of possibility.
Maximilian Marterer – statistics & current form
Maxi Marterer loves lawn tennis and Maxi Marterer loves Wimbledon! It was exactly ten years ago that the Franconian reached the semi-finals of the most prestigious junior tennis tournament as a then 18-year-old. On his way to the final round in 2013, the German beat Christian Garin, Laszlo Djere and Stefano Napolitano, who are now also on the ATP Tour.
At the time, it was already apparent that the tall right-hander’s strengths were perfectly suited to the most unusual of all tennis surfaces. Marterer has a very good serve, a good feeling for the very flat bouncing balls and also good volleys at the net.
Nevertheless, it took until last year before the current world number 170 first attracted attention on grass in the professional ranks. The German fought his way through the Wimbledon qualifiers in 2022, winning his opening match against Aljaz Bedene and only failing in the second round against the US American Francis Tiafoe.
Marterer aims to reach Wimbledon 3rd round for the first time
2023 now threatens to be a duplication of events as the former world No. 45 has again secured his ticket to the main draw via the arduous qualifying process and will face a US player after a four-set win over Borna Gojo. However, the Marterer vs. Mmoh odds alone underline that the adventure in London on Wednesday is far from over for the 28-year-old. Maxi is even seen as the favourite in this match at the moment.
The main reason for this assessment is that Marterer has so far been convincing with his own service in these days of Wimbledon. In the qualifying, the Nuremberg player eliminated Fabian Maroszan from Hungary, among others, and hit 23 (!) aces with 81% of the points won when the first serve went into the court. Against Gojo, he finally hit 17 aces and won 88% of the points on the first serve.
If the German, who has already reached the third round of a Grand Slam at the Australian Open and the French Open, can keep up these percentages on Wednesday, there is a lot to suggest that a forecast for the DTB ace will also come true between Marterer and Mmoh. Possibly even with at least two sets to spare.
Michael Mmoh – Statistics & current form
Michael Mmoh is playing the best tennis year of his career so far. At least when it comes to his performance in Grand Slam tournaments. The 25-year-old surprisingly reached the third round of the Australian Open at the beginning of the year and defeated Sascha Zverev, among others, on his way there.
While the US American, who was born in Saudi Arabia, then lost to Taylor Fritz in three straight sets in his opening match at the French Open, Mmoh has now reached the second round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
At first, it looked as if the most traditional and, for many, most important tennis tournament would have to take place without the world number 119 in 2023. In fact, Mmoh had actually lost his decisive qualifying match against Laurent Lokoli in five sets, but he benefited from the cancellation of Nick Kyrgios and therefore found his way into the main draw as a lucky loser, where he sensationally defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets in his opening match.
Auger-Aliassime was a grateful opponent in the opener
As already mentioned in the introduction, however, this success against the Canadian should not be overrated. The youngster is currently in a crisis of form and until Monday had not played a single game on grass this season. Nevertheless, Mmoh hit an impressive twelve aces against the number twelve in the world and managed 21 of his 23 service games.
Nevertheless, it should not go unmentioned at this point that the US American, whose father once served for Nigeria at the Olympics, was on court for over four hours and thus almost 90 minutes more than his upcoming opponent. On the other hand, Auger-Aliassime allowed himself an incredible 63 simple errors, which made life much easier for the underdogs. That this will also happen against the good grass court player from Germany is rather unlikely. That is exactly why we prefer the odds on the victory of the three-year older Franconian before the second-round duel Marterer vs Mmoh.
Maximilian Marterer – Michael Mmoh Direct comparison / H2H balance
We have to look back over six years to find the last and so far only direct duel between these tennis pros. At a clay-court Challenger in Rome in May 2017, Marterer prevailed smoothly in two sets. However, this encounter has no real relevance for the upcoming encounter on grass at a Grand Slam in round two.
Maximilian Marterer – Michael Mmoh Tip
As the world number 170, Maximilian Marterer can celebrate one of his greatest career successes on Wednesday. Should the Nuremberg-born player reach the third round in the men’s competition ten years after his semi-final appearance in Wimbledon in the juniors, it would be an absolute novelty for the strong server, who had to fight his way through the qualifying rounds, but has a total of eight wins from the last ten matches on grass.
In our eyes, it is therefore understandable that lower odds are offered on the German between Marterer and Mmoh. In London, the former world number 45 has performed very well so far, scoring almost at will with an outstanding first serve. Moreover, he has not been on court for as long overall as his 25-year-old opponent, who already had to put in over four hours of hard work two days ago alone.
Although the US-American Mmoh should not be underestimated after his four-set triumph against Auger-Aliassime, we place the role of favourite with the three-year older Franconian and therefore try to bet on the victory of the German hope in the second round duel Marterer vs. Mmoh
