Will the Karlsruhe native convince in the opening match?

For the fifth time in his career, Yannick Hanfmann is competing in the men’s singles at the Australian Open. So far, he has failed four times in the first round. He only won his first match in 2022 against Thanasi Kokkinakis, before being stopped in his tracks in round two by Rafael Nadal. Even now, the tip for Marcos Giron against Yannick Hanfmann is not exactly favorable for the fan of the city to advance to the next round.

It should be noted that the draw actually meant well for the 33-year-old from Karlsruhe. After all, the American Marcos Giron has never won a single match in the men’s singles at the Australian Open in his entire career and has always failed in the first round in five attempts. Nevertheless, the betting providers’ prediction that the Californian will progress tends to favor Marcos Giron over Yannick Hanfmann. We will analyze why this is so below.

There has not yet been a direct duel between the two athletes. At least in the direct comparison, Marcos Giron is clearly ahead in the ATP world rankings. The Californian currently holds 45th position in the men’s ranking, while Yannick Hanfmann, as the current number 98, just makes it into the top 100. Moreover, the preparation tournament in Adelaide was also the end of the road for the Karlsruhe native in round one, while the American at least reached the quarterfinals.

And yet the German should not be written off too hastily. The least Yannick Hanfmann is capable of is putting up a tough fight against Marcos Giron. There is plenty of value in betting on at least one set being decided in a tiebreak, with NEO.bet offering odds of 1.74.

Marcos Giron – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 45
Seed: unseeded

Last summer in Newport, 31-year-old American Marcos Giron won his first singles title on the ATP Tour. However, he has not achieved much since then.

In a total of 22 appearances in men’s singles at Grand Slam tournaments, the Californian has only managed eleven victories. He has never made it past the third round at a Grand Slam. He is also yet to reach the quarterfinals at the Masters level, although in 2024 he managed the feat of being in the main draw for the first time at all nine Masters tournaments held.

Will Marcos Giron win his first game at the Australian Open?

The Australian Open has so far been a particularly bad place for the number 45 in the ATP world rankings. Marcos Giron has taken part in the hard-court Grand Slam in Down Under five times so far. In all five cases, he lost his opening match.

With that in mind, it is quite surprising that the odds in Marcos Giron’s favor are leaning towards the Californian in his match against Yannick Hanfmann. LeoVegas, for example, is offering odds of just 1.25 for him to progress, but is also offering up to €100 in the LeoVegas new customer bonus.

Marcos Giron with two small successes in Adelaide

In principle, the American got off to a solid start to the new year. After he only lost to Ugo Humbert (ATP 18) in the round of 16 at the Paris Masters last fall, he took part in the preparation tournament in Adelaide last week.

Marcos Giron against Aleksandar Vukic (ATP 68) and Denis Shapovalov (ATP 56) also managed the first two promising victories of the 2025 season, on which they now have to build. Interesting: When he was knocked out in the quarter-finals in Adelaide, the 31-year-old also managed to take the first set to the tiebreak against the strong Félix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 24) (6:7 and 3:6).

Yannick Hanfmann – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 98
Seed: unseeded

After his first tentative steps between 2015 and 2020, 33-year-old German Yannick Hanfmann has really arrived on the ATP Tour in 2021. Four years ago, he played in all four men’s singles at the Grand Slam tournaments for the first time in his career, before he managed to win for the first time in 2022.

As mentioned at the beginning, he made it to the second round here in Melbourne Park in 2022, where he was then without a chance against Rafael Nadal in a straight 0-3. His opening victory against Thanasi Kokkinakis was his only victory at the Australian Open, where, just like Marcos Giron, he has played five singles matches so far.

Yannick Hanfmann with weak win rate at Grand Slams

If the tip for the victory of the Karlsruhe player against Yannick Hanfmann goes up, it would only be the third singles victory ever for the 33-year-old at the Grand Slam level. He is also the clear underdog in this respect because he has only managed two victories from 16 Grand Slam singles matches so far – a meager rate of just 13 percent.

Nevertheless, in contrast to his Californian opponent, the German, who has slipped to 98th place in the ATP world rankings, has already reached the quarter-finals of a Masters tournament in 2023.

In the main draw, it was already the end of the line twice

However, the start of 2025 was not particularly good for Yannick Hanfmann. After he made it into the main draw in Brisbane by beating Richard Gasquet (ATP 129), among others, he was stopped in his tracks in the first match against Grigor Dimitrov (ATP 10), but the man from Freiburg was at least able to take the first set into a tiebreak (6-7 and 3-6).

Last week in Adelaide, however, the same picture emerged at the second preparation tournament: after two wins in qualifying, the German had to admit defeat to Brandon Nakashima (ATP 36) in the first round of the men’s singles with 1:2. Now it is up to the 33-year-old to avert the first round hat-trick in the third tournament of the 2025 season.

Marcos Giron – Yannick Hanfmann Direct comparison / H2H record

Head to head: 0:0

The two athletes have never faced each other in a rated singles match before. This means that there is no head-to-head data that could influence our prediction for Marcos Giron v Yannick Hanfmann.

Marcos Giron – Yannick Hanfmann Tip

Although the betting odds for Marcos Giron against Yannick Hanfmann are in favor of the American, the German still has a certain chance of advancing to the next round. In contrast to the Californian, the man from Karlsruhe already knows what it feels like to win a men’s singles match at the hard court Grand Slam in Down Under. So far, Marcos Giron had always failed in the first round without exception.

Between two players who could well play an appealing match on equal terms, provided that neither of them has a bad day, a certain amount of playing time can therefore be expected. The prediction that at least one set will be decided in a tiebreak is very interesting in the match between Marcos Giron and Yannick Hanfmann.
