Will the last German leave Melbourne now?
Laura Siegemund was not only the only German participant who survived the first round in the women’s singles. The player from Filderstadt also won the second match and surprisingly entered the round of the best 32 players. Here, however, she will now clash with the reigning world champion. The probability that Laura Siegemund will win against Caroline Garcia is correspondingly small.
Nevertheless, the way in which the experienced 34-year-old came back from 2:1 down to reach the third round of the Australian Open for the first time since 2016 was impressive. Nevertheless, Laura Siegemund’s prediction against Caroline Garcia must clearly go in the direction of the Frenchwoman, who has not lost a set in the tournament and has won a total of seven of her last eight singles matches.
Although the role of favourite is clearly with the world number four from France, Laura Siegemund still has the potential to demand everything from the reigning world champion. It would be very presumptuous to bet on a surprise victory for the German. But it is absolutely realistic that the player from Filderstadt will win at least seven games against the French player.
We are therefore betting on more than 6.5 games won by the German, who is the only one of five German players in the women’s singles who is still holding the flag high.
Laura Siegemund – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking: 158
Position in the seedings: Protected Ranking
The 34-year-old German Laura Siegemund is already in the golden autumn of her career. After an injury-plagued 2022 in which she only made it to the main draw of the US Open, where she was eliminated in round one, the player from Filderstadt wants to attack again in the new season.
Thanks to a protected ranking, the player who once won the women’s doubles at the US Open together with Vera Zvonareva in 2020 was given a starting spot for the important tennis tournament in Melbourne.
Two 2-1 wins after trailing 0-1
Of all the five German participants, Laura Siegemund, who has fallen to 158th in the WTA world rankings, survived the first round unscathed and prevented a complete debacle for the German women’s tennis team.
However, all the experts thought the 34-year-old had little chance in the second round against Irina-Camelia Begu – the number 27 in the seedings. However, after losing the first set, the German fought back just like in the first round and forced her way into the third round in a spectacular tennis fight over three hours and twelve minutes.
Great potential for improvement on own serve
When it comes to Laura Siegemund’s match against Caroline Garcia, the betting odds are heavily in favour of the Frenchwoman. However, the Filderstadt player has absolutely nothing to lose in this third round match and can only win.
Her cumulative experience and her resilience to not go down after setbacks are definitely indicative of the fact that the 34-year-old will not be without a chance in this match. It is absolutely clear, however, that Laura Siegemund will have to drastically improve her first serve. In her second-round win, she only won points on her first serve in 55% of all cases. This is too low a figure to keep up with the reigning world champion.
Caroline Garcia – Statistics & current form
Current World Ranking: 4
Position in the seedings: 4
After a promising career in the junior ranks (among other things, she reached the final of the girls’ singles at the US Open in 2011), 29-year-old Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia was considered a perennial talent for a long time.
In 2014, the player from Saint-Germain-en-Laye recorded her first tournament win at a WTA International, which was followed by ten more titles – including only four Major titles. After a strong 2017 season, she disappeared completely into oblivion again.
Won seven of last eight singles matches
Lately, the world number four, who became the big winner of the season in 2022 with the overall victory at the Western & Southern Open as well as the triumph at the WTA Finals, spoke very openly about her eating disorder, which also affected her performances on the court for years.
In the meantime, the Frenchwoman seems as stable as ever and is finally putting in consistently good performances on the court. With two straight 2-0 wins, Garcia entered the third round of the Australian Open. In total, the 29-year-old has won seven of her last eight singles matches.
Only dropped one service game in the tournament
However, her run to the third round in Melbourne was not without its problems. After an admittedly easy opening win over the outsider Katherine Sebov, the Frenchwoman had to work hard against Leylah Fernandez in a two-setter with a total of 25 games. In the end, however, she won 2:0 (7:6 and 7:5).
The difference in the end was not least due to her much more poisonous service. Caroline Garcia won 77 percent of her points on her first serve, which meant that she only had to surrender one service game. Laura Siegemund’s forecast for the reigning world champion’s next victory against Caroline Garcia is correspondingly clear.
Laura Siegemund – Caroline Garcia Direct comparison / H2H-balance
Head to Head: 0:1
There has only been one duel between Laura Siegemund and Caroline Garcia. In the first round of the French Open 2021, the Frenchwoman won 2-0 against the German (6-3 and 6-1) on clay court.
Laura Siegemund – Caroline Garcia Tip
The odds are clearly in favour of Laura Siegemund against Caroline Garcia, who has won seven of her last eight singles matches and has only surrendered one service game in the tournament. However, the resilience of the Germans should not be underestimated. Laura Siegemund came back twice in a row to win 2-1 and, despite not always holding her first serve, fended off an incredible 13 break points from her Romanian opponent in the second round – a rate of 72 per cent.
The betting on Laura Siegemund against Caroline Garcia is accordingly good that the player from Filderstadt will also keep up reasonably well against the world champion and win at least seven games regardless of the outcome of the match.
