German hopeful duel in Lausanne
There are a number of German women’s tennis players who have achieved a great deal but are in the home stretch of their careers or have already ended them. These include Angelique Kerber, Andrea Petkovic, Julia Görges, Sabine Lisicki and Tatjana Maria. For a long time, there was hardly any young talent in sight who could one day follow in the footsteps of this successful generation.
In the meantime, however, there are some young German women who raise hopes for a rosy German tennis future. Nastasja Schunk is one of them. Jule Niemeier and Eva Lys also belong in this pot. Both will meet in the second round of the WTA tournament in Lausanne on Thursday. This means that the DTB has at least one player in the quarter-finals.
The 22-year-old, however, is characterised by a very powerful game, which comes into its own better on grass. In Lausanne, however, the match is played on clay and therefore we think that Eva Lys, who is two years younger, can possibly keep the match open for a long time. We can therefore imagine placing a bet on more than 2.5 sets in the match between Jule Niemeier and Eva Lys.
Jule Niemeier – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking: 109
Position in the seedings: unseeded
It was very bitter for Jule Niemeier that she could not collect any world ranking points for her great time in Wimbledon. The player from Dortmund is still outside the top 100 in the WTA rankings and must continue to collect every point she can in order to avoid the bull run through the qualifying rounds at the next tournaments. Nothing will be given away on the way to the top.
With Wimbledon momentum into the Top 100
But if the 22-year-old continues to deliver like she did at Church Road, it’s only a matter of time before she can break into the extended world elite. In this case, however, one should keep the tennis ball rather flat, because a very young player can definitely fail due to too high expectations and the associated pressure.
But the balance sheet of the last two weeks looks very good. Jule Niemeier has won five of the last six matches on the WTA Tour. In between, however, she lost to Aleksandra Krunic in the Bundesliga with TC Bredeney. All in all, however, her condition speaks in favour of playing the odds on a victory for the two-year older Dortmund player in the duel between Jule Niemeier and Eva Lys.
In the first round of Lausanne, however, Jule Niemeier had big problems against local hero Ylena In-Albon. After the German won the first set 7:5, everything seemed to go as expected, but the Swiss won the second set in a tiebreak. In the third set, however, a break was enough for Jule Niemeier to win the match after 2:43 hours.
Eva Lys – Statistics & current form
Current World Ranking: 217
Seeded list position: unseeded
Eva Lys is just 20 years old and wants to take the step in the near future that Jule Niemeier has already taken in Wimbledon. The conditions are similarly good for the Ukrainian-born player. But she is still at the very beginning and has to earn her spurs first. The player from Hamburg has almost no experience of matches on the WTA Tour to date.
Through the qualifying round into the main draw
It was only this year that she played her first match in a main draw in Stuttgart and even won against Viktorija Golubic from Switzerland. She then lost to Iga Swiatek, but these are experiences that move the 20-year-old forward. In Wimbledon, she tried her hand at qualifying for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, but failed there in the first round.
Eva Lys could focus all the more on the tournament in Lausanne, however, because even if it only belongs to the 250 series, a WTA tournament is a great thing for the Hamburg player on still unfamiliar terrain. However, she managed to bite her way through the qualifiers after wins over France’s Elsa Jacquemot and Katie Volynets from the United States.
In the first round of the main draw, the 20-year-old was the clear outsider against Varvara Gracheva from Russia, but showed a great match and won 7:5 and 6:4 in the end. The young German only had big problems with her service and had to accept a total of six breaks. That’s not a good balance to make a prediction about a victory for the Hamburg player between Jule Niemeier and Eva Lys.
Jule Niemeier – Eva Lys Direct comparison / H2H-balance
Jule Niemeier and Eva Lys know each other from the junior squads of the German Tennis Federation. On the tennis court, however, they have only met once before in a match. At the end of April, both women competed in the ITF tournament in Zagreb. The two young Germans met in the round of 16, but the encounter did not last too long.
After 21 minutes, Jule Niemeier was leading 3:0 in the first set when Eva Lys had to retire due to injury. Officially, the Dortmund player is leading in the direct comparison, but there was still no match point to marvel at between the two German young talents.
Jule Niemeier – Eva Lys Tip
Jule Niemeier is two years older than Eva Lys and that’s why she’s already a bit further ahead in terms of sport. All tennis fans still remember her great performances at Wimbledon. The Dortmund player has won five out of six matches on the tour, but it could only get really difficult now, when she has to confirm her great time at Church Road.
Eva Lys has no pressure. She is the clear outsider. But should she win, she would be in the quarter-finals of a WTA tournament for the first time. That should be incentive enough. Moreover, this German duel has a higher profile because of Niemeier’s recent successes. The Hamburg player could use this to push herself into the limelight as well.
However, we do not expect it to be a completely clear-cut affair. Because Jule Niemeier’s game is not as effective on clay as it is on grass. That’s why we can well imagine that this match will go over three sets. However, we have decided to play the German duel between Jule Niemeier and Eva Lys with the betting odds on a match handicap (+4.5) on the Hamburg player.
