Can Struff also overcome the next hurdle?
Jan-Lennard Struff clearly got the upper hand in the first round of the French Open with a 3-0 win and is back in the second round of the men’s singles at the only Grand Slam tournament to be held on clay for the first time since 2021. He will now face a top 20 player directly. Despite this, the betting odds on Jan-Lennard Struff against Alexander Bublik for the German’s next victory are good:
At least Struffi has a positive record against the Kazakh. The Warstein native has won three of his four singles matches against the current world number 17. What’s more, Bublik is not overly fond of clay court. In five attempts, he has only ever reached the second round of the French Open twice and has never survived unscathed, which certainly influences our forecast for Jan-Lennard Struff against Alexander Bublik
It should be noted, however, that Alexander Bublik didn’t let anything get in the way of his smooth 3:0 victory in his opening match. A really short and one-sided match is therefore not to be expected, although we do not assume that both players will be involved in a five-set thriller in this duel. Rather, it is likely to be a healthy mediocrity.
We see a lot of value in the bet that the match will be decided in a maximum of 38 games. Alternatively, a handicap of +2.5 could be placed on the Kazakh, who would only have to win one set for this bet to pay off. Betway offers odds of 1.55 for this. Jan-Lennard Struff – Statistics & current form
Current position in the world rankings: 41
Position in the seeding list: unseeded
The 34-year-old German Jan-Lennard Struff is really blossoming once again in the fall of his career. Struffi has just celebrated his first major title win in Munich in the fourth final he has reached at an ATP Tour tournament, before continuing his successful run at the most recent major tournaments.
In Madrid, for example, the Warstein native eliminated Ugo Humbert (ATP 14) cleanly 2:0 and advanced to the round of 16, where he was narrowly beaten 1:2 by Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 3) in a hard-fought match with two tiebreaks
Struffi strolled into the second round in record time
The German carried exactly the same form with him to Roland Garros, where he really left nothing to be desired in the first round against Roman Andres Burruchaga (ATP 144). In the end, he only conceded six games in his smooth 3-0 victory.
In a record time of 91 minutes, Struffi recorded his tenth singles win in his 20th men’s singles match at the French Open and booked his ticket to the second round of Roland Garros for the first time since 2021. The odds are also now stacked in his favor for Jan-Lennard Struff against Alexander Bublik
Jan-Lennard Struff didn’t give up a single service game
In particular, the Warstein native didn’t let anything slip in the first round. If the first serve came in, which was the case for just 54 percent of all serves, he scored points on 31 out of 38 first serves. Even with his second serve, he ended up winning 63 percent of his points.
As a result, Struffi only conceded a single break point against himself, which he also fended off to top it all off. The 34-year-old has thus converted every single service game into a point at this year’s French Open and, to make matters worse, has won 52 percent of his return points. That should give him a boost for the tough task in the second round
Alexander Bublik – statistics & current form
Current position in the world rankings: 17
Position in the seeding list: 19
26-year-old Alexander Bublik was actually born in Russia, but has been competing on the ATP Tour under the Kazakh flag since the 2017 season. However, he has only enjoyed resounding success in the last three years. However, he now has a total of four singles titles on the ATP Tour.
The player, who is known for his very risky and attacking game and mostly lives from his serves, has now cemented his place in the top 20 of the ATP world rankings
Alexander Bublik does not feel comfortable on clay
It should be noted, however, that not only none of his four tournament wins on the ATP Tour, but also none of his six titles on the ATP Challenger Tour were won on clay (nine titles on hard court, one on grass). This is of course due to the fact that hard serves are much easier to defend on slow clay, where the ball loses speed on impact and is slowed down.
In other words: While the motto “high risk – high reward” often counts on the fast hard court – Bublik’s favorite surface – he deprives himself of success time and again by playing too risky on clay court, even against much weaker opponents. This is why the Kazakh has never made it past the second round at the French Open in five appearances
Alexander Bublik with a weak record against Jan-Lennard Struff
The experienced hard-court player has recently been beaten three more times in the clay-court season – by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (ATP 117) in Lyon, Nuno Borges (ATP 53) in Rome and Borna Coric (ATP 33) in Monte-Carlo – by players against whom he would normally have a clear advantage on hard court.
Accordingly, the prediction for Jan-Lennard Struff against Alexander Bublik is that the 26-year-old will not make it past the second round of Roland Garros this year either. To make matters worse, the world number 17 has also lost three of his four previous matches against the German…
Jan-Lennard Struff – Alexander Bublik Direct comparison / H2H result
Head to head: 3:1
The two athletes have met four times so far and Jan-Lennard Struff has come out on top against the Kazakh in three of the four matches, although he narrowly won the last meeting on grass 2:1 in Halle last summer. The only clay court duel, however, was won cleanly by the German in Budapest in April 2018 with 2:0 (6:1 and 6:4).
Jan-Lennard Struff – Alexander Bublik tip
The betting odds for Jan-Lennard Struff against Alexander Bublik are remarkably in the German’s favor. Although Struffi has won three of his four duels with the Kazakh so far, he is not ranked 17th in the ATP world rankings for nothing – a position that the Warstein native has not yet reached and from which he is still a long way off. However, the German’s strong form naturally speaks in his favor, while Bublik is not too fond of clay courts
In principle, we can imagine that both players will win at least one set. However, a clean 3:0 would not be completely out of the question either, which is why we cover most eventualities by predicting under 38.5 games for Jan-Lennard Struff against Alexander Bublik.
Tipwin has odds of 1.65 available for this, which we play with four out of ten units. With the French Open, we are currently also increasingly heading towards the EURO 2024, for which there are already one or two interesting bonus promotions.
