Who will take the Wimbledon crown?
There have been a number of ladies competing at Wimbledon this year who have already won this tournament. However, ahead of Saturday’s grand final, it is clear that a player who has not yet been there will be allowed to immortalise herself on the roll of honour as the two finalists, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, are both making their first appearance in the final at Church Road.
In essence, a final is always worthy because whoever has made it to this point has won six matches before and is in captivating form. However, after some of the top players in the WTA rankings got caught in each round, there are still two seeded ladies in this final of Wimbledon 2022.
Not only have Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur not yet been in a Grand Slam final. There will also be the first major title for Kazakhstan, or else for Tunisia and thus for the entire black continent.
This is mainly due to the ranking, as the Kazakh is ranked 23rd in the world, while her 27-year-old opponent has made it to second in the world. Great tennis can be expected on Saturday. Since the 23-year-old Kazakh has also had two strong weeks in London, a bet on more than 2.5 sets in this final between Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur sounds quite plausible.
Elena Rybakina – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking: 23
Position in the seedings: 17
Elena Rybakina is Russian by birth, but switched to the Kazakh federation in 2018 and is therefore allowed to compete at Wimbledon. Lucky for the 23-year-old, who has won two WTA Tour titles in her career, otherwise she would not have been allowed to compete at Church Road this year. But now she has the biggest success in her career to her name, which she can still make golden on Saturday.
Easy way to the final?
Last year, the Kazakh reached the quarter-finals of the French Open at the Stade Roland Garros. She has now pulverised her best result at a Grand Slam tournament to date at Wimbledon. It is actually a pity for her that there are no world ranking points, otherwise she would have been able to scratch the top ten in the rankings and would have climbed into the absolute world class in women’s tennis.
There is no really easy way to a Grand Slam final, but the Kazakh was somewhat favoured by the draw. She did not face a single seeded player until the semi-finals. On her way, she beat Coco Vandeweghe (USA), Bianca Andreescu (Canada), Zheng Qinwen (China), Petra Martic (Croatia) and Ajla Tomljanovic (Australia).
The biggest challenge, however, was in the final round. There she faced the last remaining Wimbledon champion. Simona Halep had not lost a set so far in the tournament, but Elena Rybakina played with pressure and showed a world-class match. In the end, she won clearly 6:3 and 6:3. If she manages to come up trumps in the final as well, then you should definitely take a closer look at the odds between Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur for at least one set win for the Kazakh.
Ons Jabeur – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking: 2
Position in the seedings: 3
Unlike Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur not only has an entire country behind her, but also the Arab world in addition to Africa. The Tunisian is a beacon of hope for many people. It is not only her outstanding tennis that makes her a role model, but also the likeable manner with which she impresses the entire tennis world, not only at Wimbledon.
Makeup-free lawn record
Currently, the 27-year-old is in outstanding form. Already in the preparation she has shown all her class. Even before arriving in London, the Tunisian won the grass tournament in Berlin and now has eleven victories on grass in a row to her name. She is completely unbeaten on this surface this season.
Even though her opponent is strong, the forecast in the duel between Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur has to go to a win for the Tunisian. The world number two raced through the tournament to the quarter-finals, not dropping a set in her first four matches against Mirjam Björklund (Sweden), Katarzyna Kawa (Poland), Diane Parry (France) and Elise Mertens (Belgium).
In the quarter-finals, she then had problems in between against Czech Marie Bouzkova, when Ons Jabeur had to shake herself after losing the first set. Most recently, she also dropped a set against her friend Tatjana Maria in the semifinals. However, the Tunisian is always able to pick herself up after setbacks and then play her best tennis again.
Elena Rybakina – Ons Jabeur Direct comparison / H2H record
Three times Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur have met on the WTA Tour. Overall, the direct comparison of 2:1 wins is in favour of the Tunisian. The first encounter took place in 2019 in the round of 16 in Wuhan, China. At that time, the Kazakh won in three sets 6:1, 6:7 and 6:2. It took two years before Ons Jabeur could return the favour.
In March 2021, the two women met in the second round of Dubai. At the time, the Kazakh was still well ahead of the Tunisian in the rankings. Ons Jabeur advanced to the next round after winning in three sets. The last duel was in October last year. After the Tunisian had taken a 1-0 lead in the first set, Elena Rybakina had to retire injured from the match in Chicago.
Elena Rybakina – Ons Jabeur Tip
Elena Rybakina is playing an outstanding tournament at Church Road. There is no other way to advance to the final. However, the Kazakh only had to eliminate one opponent from the top 20 in the WTA rankings, Simona Halep. Ons Jabeur was even spared completely by the top players. So both were a little lucky on their way to this final.
For both women, it is the biggest match in their careers. Therefore, it is safe to assume that both of them will be a little nervous on the holy lawn on Saturday. After all, they can become tennis legends.
But all in all, there is probably more to be said for a triumph for the Tunisian. She is not ranked number two in the world for nothing, having stabilised her game extremely well while still being very variable. As a result, the 29-year-old has won eleven grass court matches in a row. That’s why we decided to play the betting odds on a win for the Tunisian in the Wimbledon final between Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur.
