The defending champion does the honors!
Dominic Thiem flew out of the top 100 of the world rankings after last week. The reason was his early elimination at the tournament in Vienna, where he had to leave already after the first round and a defeat against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Now it’s time for Dominic Thiem against Holger Rune at the Masters in Paris. Tip and odds served by the betting base! The Dane has recently been coached by none other than Boris Becker. However, the German tennis icon currently has to work on several different areas of his game, because the number 7 in the world ranking list is not very successful at the moment.
For the match between Dominic Thiem and Holger Rune, the forecast now includes a tiebreak.
Dominic Thiem – statistics & current form
The 30-year-old has already collected a whopping 17 titles on the ATP Tour and even recorded a Grand Slam triumph at the 2020 US Open, but has not won another tournament since the latter victory.
The reason for the downturn was, among other things, a very long injury break. It is questionable whether, at the age of 30, he will once again reach his performance peak of earlier days. At least he managed to get through the qualifiers at the Masters in Paris and beat Sonego and O’Connell, two players who are well ahead of him in the world rankings.
Thiem with monster match against Wawrinka
Thanks to a successful qualifying campaign, the right-hander secured a spot in the main draw and faced Stan Wawrinka in the last opening round. Like Thiem, the Swiss has also won a Grand Slam tournament before, but is also now playing at a much lower level.
The match between the two players turned into a nail-biting thriller. The Austrian only triumphed after three sets and a fended off match point. The match took a lot of energy, especially considering that it was not finished until after two o’clock in the night.
On the other hand, it further boosted Thiem’s self-confidence after the already successful qualification. In view of this and the recent unconvincing form of his nevertheless favored opponent, the forecast and odds on more than two sets are also worth considering for the clash between Dominic Thiem and Holger Rune.
Holger Rune – statistics & current form
The new Rune coach Boris Becker triumphed as a player three times in Paris! This yield reached otherwise only Murat Safin and is topped only by the record holder Novak Djokovic with six titles. Becker can therefore undoubtedly give his new protégé plenty of valuable tips, especially for this tournament.
In contrast, Rune already won the Masters on the Seine last year! He defeated the “Djoker” in three sets and inflicted only the second defeat on the Serb in the eighth final of his career in Paris.
For the 20-year-old Dane it was the biggest success in his career, especially since he won the title as an unseeded player! Subsequently, he also became the first Danish player to enter the top ten of the world rankings.
Rune clearly lacks consistency
In the recent past, however, things have been mixed for Rune. While he celebrated three titles on the ATP Tour last year, he only managed one triumph in the current calendar year at the tournament in Munich last April.
He did reach the final of two Masters in Monte Carlo and Rome in the spring, but was defeated on both occasions. In recent months, his form has shown an even sharper downward trend. At the Masters in Cincinnati and Toronto, he lost in the opening round, and at the US Open, Rune was knocked out in the first round.
The recent trip to China was also disappointing. The Dane only played three matches at the tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai. Afterwards he had to stow away his rackets again in Stockholm, a tournament he had won last year, already after the first appearance.
Will the underdog prevail?
At least the dress rehearsal for the Masters in Paris was solid. Here, Rune reached the semifinals in Basel last week.
On the other hand, he was seeded first at the Swiss Indoors, which is why the lost semifinal against the Canadian and later tournament winner Auger-Aliassime was a minor disappointment. In the light of this, the match between Dominic Thiem and Holger Rune seems to be even more promising with the Austrian winning in three sets.

The duel took place once so far. It took place last April on clay in Monte Carlo and ended with a 2:0 win for the Dane
Dominic Thiem – Holger Rune Tip
Thiem did not compete in the tournament in the past three years, but acted quite successfully in Paris before. Between 2017 and 2019, he reached the round of 16 twice and once even the semifinals.
In addition, “Domi” will be highly motivated, as he still needs to collect some points in the world rankings, so that the participation in the next Grand Slam tournament in Australia at the beginning of next year is not endangered. In the exchange of blows between Dominic Thiem and Holger Rune, the tip aims at at least one tiebreak.
Even though the Dane goes into the encounter as the favorite, the Austrian is not without a chance. Thanks to the highly dramatic victory against Wawrinka in the 1st round and a previous convincing quali for the Masters in Paris, his confidence is newly boosted.
Furthermore, Rune has disappointed for the most part in recent weeks and months, which is why at least no breakthrough can be expected from the new Becker protégé. Rather, close rounds are in the offing, at least one of which will probably be decided in a tiebreak.
