Does Alcaraz make the dream final?
Fans at Church Road are just two semi-finals away from the dream final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. While the seven-time Wimbledon champion from Serbia will face Jannik Sinner, the world number one from Spain will take on third seed Daniil Medvedev on Friday. High-class tennis and long rallies are inevitable.
The fact that many experts are likely to tip the odds in favour of the 20-year-old in the run-up to the Alcaraz vs Medvedev encounter is largely down to his impressions of the tournament so far. Carlito has only dropped two sets in his five matches and saved some energy in his quarter-final against his childhood buddy Holger Rune thanks to a three-set win.
His next opponent, on the other hand, needed five rounds and thus the full distance to put surprise man Chris Eubanks in his place. While fitness is unlikely to be a major issue two full days after the quarter-finals, there are some arguments that make a prediction on the Murcia talent of the century more likely ahead of the eagerly awaited semi-final between Alcaraz and Medvedev. Secretly, however, the British would also like to see the duel of the giants on Sunday, Djokovic against Alcaraz.
Carlos Alcaraz – Statistics & current form
Before this season, the Round of 16 was Carlos Alcaraz’s best finish at the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament. Even as a junior, the Spaniard failed to make it past the last eight at the All England Tennis Club in London. Certainly, the 20-year-old top talent would not necessarily be called a grass court specialist because of this, but Carlito nevertheless has everything it takes to play successfully on the unfamiliar surface.
The trademark of the world number one is the inimitable power and explosiveness that he can put into every shot – despite his relatively small height. Hardly any other pro on the tour is able to produce winners from the defensive with fearsome regularity.
No one can match Alcaraz’s power tennis so far
Because his serve is also working very well at Church Road these days and last year’s US Open winner is also by far the best return player on tour – along with Novak Djokovic – coach Juan Carlos Ferrero’s protégé is sniffing break chances on his opponent’s serve unusually often, even on grass. This trend will continue on Friday, so we give the favourites from Murcia the better chances and focus on the odds on the world number one between Alcaraz and Medvedev.
Finally, a remarkable statistic should be mentioned. In the entire 2023 tennis year, Carlito has an outstanding record of 45 wins and only four losses. After triumphing at the popular preparatory tournament in Queens, Alcaraz extended his winning streak on grass to ten matches in a row. The right-hander has lost only two of his eight semi-finals this season. On Friday, the second Grand Slam final of his career beckons, which will certainly not be the last…
Daniil Medvedev – Statistics & current form
Last year, Daniil Medvedev was not allowed to participate in the Wimbledon Championships due to his origin from Russia. In 2021, he failed to reach the last 16, while in 2020 the most prestigious tennis tournament of the year fell victim to the pandemic. Logically, the All England Tennis Club and the 2021 US Open winner have not yet been able to develop an intimate love affair.
Nevertheless, the 27-year-old made it to the semi-finals, even though he had to push himself to the limit in his quarter-final against Chris Eubanks. Medvedev was already down 1:2 sets against the strong-serving US American, but fought back impressively and proved to have the longer breath, especially in the decisive set. All in all, the Eastern European has dropped one set more in the tournament than his Spanish opponent.
Will Medvedev push his limits against Carlito
However, if we had to compare subjectively who has put in the better performances on the pitch, the choice would definitely go to Carlos Alcaraz. Medvedev has traditionally been strong defensively in the London days. The former world number one returns an extremely large number of balls, has good length in his game, but at the same time has to cope with weak phases time and again.
Exactly these will certainly be his undoing against such a consistent opponent as Carlito. We therefore even believe that the odds on a 3:0 or 3:1 set win pay off in the duel Alcaraz vs. Medvedev.
Carlos Alcaraz – Daniil Medvedev Direct comparison / H2H record
Two years ago, these two superstars faced each other in the second round of Wimbledon. Carlos Alcaraz was unable to cope with Medvedev’s strong baseline game and lost as an 18-year-old youngster in three sets. The Spaniard celebrated a successful revenge this year in the final of Indian Wells, which the new world number one won 6:3, 6:2 against his Russian opponent.
Carlos Alcaraz – Daniil Medvedev Tip
Four men can still have hopes of winning the singles title at Wimbledon 2023. Even before the semi-finals, in which Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev will face each other, the betting odds continue to underline that the seven-time champion and grass-court king Novak Djokovic has the best chances. Almost all experts are predicting a final match between Alcaraz and Djokovic on Sunday.
We agree with this assessment and are firmly convinced that the Spanish world number one will have the upper hand against his Russian opponent. Both stars will be playing their first Wimbledon semi-final, but the 20-year-old has been more convincing in the tournament so far. Most recently, against Holger Rune, there was a strong three-set win, while Medvedev had to go over five sets against Eubanks.
Since the odds on a simple Alcaraz win don’t bring any value, we decided to place a bet between Alcaraz and Medvedev that the Andalusian will come out on top with at least a two-set lead. Bwin offers 1.70 as the top odds for this, which is ultimately worth a stake of six units for us.
