Alcaraz celebrates his debut at the ATP Finals
The Iberian was seeded No. 1 at the ATP Finals last year, but had to cancel his participation in the competition due to an injury. Now he is making his belated debut in Turin. Carlos Alcaraz kicks off the tournament against Alexander Zverev
The Spaniard has looked physically tired in recent weeks and has not been able to build on his very good performances from the first half of the season. However, his German opponent did not perform consistently either. It is therefore not possible to identify a real favorite, even if the Spaniard is clearly ahead in the betting odds
In the duel between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, the forecast includes a three-set match.
Carlos Alcaraz – Statistics & current form
Alcaraz experienced his breakthrough last year: by winning the US Open, he rose to become the youngest number 1 in the world rankings. He was able to maintain his high level until the middle of this year’s season, which is why no other player qualified for the ATP Finals as early as Alcaraz.
He already had his ticket for the tournament in his pocket in July of this year. By comparison, his upcoming opponent only booked his plane ticket to Turin at the beginning of this month
Alacaraz triumphed at Wimbledon for the first time in 2023
The highlight of 2023 from the Spaniard’s perspective was, of course, winning Wimbledon. In an epic five-set match, he dethroned Novak Djokovic in London. The Serbian had previously won the title in each of his previous four appearances at Wimbledon.
This success seemed to herald a changing of the guard in men’s tennis, as the Spaniard had previously won no fewer than five other tournaments since January of this year. His successes included top tournaments such as the Masters in Indian Wells and Madrid. With his triumph in London, he also regained the number 1 spot in the world rankings
His form has been suffering for some time
But then things turned out differently: while the “Djoker” continued to impress, the Spanish prodigy’s performance dropped off. This development did not come as a complete surprise, as Alcaraz is only 20 years old. Fluctuations in performance are not unusual in light of this.
Nevertheless, it is clear that things went downhill after Wimbledon. Alcaraz only competed in three tournaments and was unable to win another title. In Beijing at the China Open, he at least made it as far as the semi-finals, while he was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Masters in Shanghai.
The low point for the time being was his opening defeat at the recent Masters in Paris. He was beaten 0:2 by the Russian Roman Safiullin, who is no higher than number 39 in the world rankings. In view of this, the betting tip and odds for a 2:1 win for the German in the duel between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev are also worth a recommendation
Alexander Zverev – Statistics & current form
As mentioned, the Hamburg native only just managed to get his ticket. In the end, it was enough for seventh place in the “2023 Race”, meaning that only Holger Rune was worse than a participant in the ATP Finals.
However, Zverev is the only player apart from Novak Djokovic to have won the tournament more than once. He already won in Turin in 2018 and 2021! Furthermore, Zverev almost fought his way back to the top of the world rankings in 2023 after initial difficulties.
His only tournament victories this year came in July in his hometown of Hamburg and at the end of September in Chengdu, China. In the latter success, he celebrated a victory in the final against Safiullin, who recently defeated his upcoming opponent 2:0
At least one tiebreak?
Hanseatic’s form is still in need of improvement. His record over the past nine matches is slightly negative with five defeats.
As a close match is now on the cards, Carlos Alcaraz’s match against Alexander Zverev also offers the prospect of at least one tie-break
Carlos Alcaraz – Alexander Zverev Direct comparison / H2H result
Carlos Alcaraz and Zverev have faced each other twice this year. In May, the Spaniard prevailed 2-0 at the Masters in Madrid on clay and he also recorded an outright 3-0 win at the US Open last September. On the other hand, the pairing have an even record with three wins each.
Carlos Alcaraz – Alexander Zverev tip
The Spaniard has lost three of his last five matches and will naturally be less than satisfied with this result. The world number 2 has not won a title since his Wimbledon victory this summer.
After a very strong first half of the year, his performance has dropped off noticeably in recent months. The forecast for the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev therefore includes three sets
Although the Iberian is the odds-on favorite for the match, the betting base expects at least a close match. This is also supported by the fact that the German has plenty of experience at the ATP Finals. While Alcaraz is appearing at the tournament for the first time, the Hamburg native has two titles to his name in Turin!
