Is the local hero also no obstacle for Sascha?
With two brilliant 3-0 victories, Alexander Zverev got off to a very strong start in the 137th men’s singles at the Wimbledon Championships. The German was on court for just 94 minutes in the second round and celebrated one of the fastest three-set wins of his career. In total, Sascha has now won 17 of his last 19 singles matches, which is why our tip is also clearly on the German superstar for Cameron Norrie against Alexander Zverev
While Cameron Norrie, a native South African who grew up in New Zealand and plays under the British flag, will certainly have the crowd on his side as the local hero in spe. However, the German has always been too much of a challenge for the world number 42, who has lost all five singles matches against Sascha on the ATP Tour. The forecast for Cameron Norrie against Alexander Zverev must take into account that the German high-flyer only just eliminated the Briton 3:1 in the round of 16 of the Australian Open 2024
However, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club certainly suits Cameron Norrie. Only two years ago, the Briton recorded his greatest success to date at Grand Slam level on Church Road when he reached the semi-finals in the men’s singles. In total, he has eleven wins from 17 singles matches at the only Grand Slam tournament to be held on grass.
And yet he now faces one of the heavyweights of the ATP Tour. It’s no coincidence that Sascha also plays a role in the Wimbledon overall winner prediction after his recent run to the final of the French Open. We recommend betting on the German to progress with a handicap of -6.5 games.
Cameron Norrie – Statistics & current form
Current position in the world rankings: 42
Position in the seeding list: unseeded
The 28-year-old Brit Cameron Norrie has come a long way in his life. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the son of a Scotsman and a Welshman grew up in New Zealand before moving to Europe on his own initiative at the age of 15 to further his tennis career.
Since then, Cameron Norrie has also competed under the British flag, which means he has the crowd on his side at the Wimbledon Championships. The fact that he reached the semi-finals of the men’s singles two years ago – by far his best run at a Grand Slam tournament to date – shows that this can be a factor.
Weak odds against the top stars on the ATP Tour
The 28-year-old has won a total of five singles titles on the ATP Tour to date. The highlight so far: the overall victory at the Masters Tournament in Indian Wells, which he won against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili in 2021.
However, the fact that he beat an opponent with a less illustrious name for his only major title also shows that Cameron Norrie has always struggled against the top stars. Out of 47 meetings with top 10 players, the Briton won just ten matches – a win rate of just 21.3 percent. Against Alexander Zverev, for example, he still has zero wins after five matches
Cameron Norrie with mixed results in the grass court season
So it is hardly surprising that the odds are stacked against the 28-year-old Cameron Norrie against Alexander Zverev, who is already playing his fourth tournament in the short grass court season but has only won one of the three tournaments so far. With Jack Pinnington Jones (ATP 773) in Nottingham, Milos Raonic (ATP 186) in London and Emil Ruusuvuori (ATP 88) in Eastbourne, he lost three times to an opponent who had absolutely nothing to do with the top of the ATP world rankings.
The task for the local hero-to-be will be correspondingly difficult, although Cameron Norrie has at least made a good start on Church Road with two smooth 3-0 victories over Facundo Díaz Acosta (ATP 67) and compatriot Jack Draper (ATP 28). However, he also dropped serve a total of six times in both matches, which underlines the fact that the two victories without losing a set were by no means completely smooth sailing.
Alexander Zverev – statistics & current form
Current position in the world rankings: 4
Position in the seeding list: 4
The 27-year-old German Alexander Zverev is traditionally not an unconditional title contender at Wimbledon. With his height of 1.98 meters and the power of around 230 km/h in his serves, he basically has the perfect physique needed for the fast grass court.
However, the fact that he has not won a single one of his 22 singles titles on the ATP Tour on grass (14 on hard court and eight on clay) also shows that this is not his favorite surface. The Wimbledon Championships are also the only Grand Slam tournament at which Sascha has never made it past the round of 16
Sascha’s service is untouchable so far
This year, given his strength of form, he could still make it past the round of 16 for the first time, from which he is only one win away anyway. With two brilliant 3:0 victories, Alexander Zverev finally swept past his two opponents Roberto Carballés Baena (ATP 64) and Marcos Giron (ATP 46) without dropping more than four games in a single set.
Sascha, who was on court for just 94 minutes in the second round and recorded one of the fastest three-set victories of his career, has yet to concede a single service game at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. After successfully fending off five break points in the opening match, his American opponent didn’t get a single break chance in the second round
Alexander Zverev with a grateful tournament tree
Cameron Norrie’s victory over Alexander Zverev is therefore very promising for the Olympic champion, who is increasingly among the title contenders as the world number four. No wonder, as Taylor Fritz is waiting in the sixth section of the tournament tree, an opponent against whom he has a 5:3 head-to-head lead, while Andrey Rublev (ATP 6) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 11), the two top seeds, have already bowed out of the competition in the fifth section, where his potential opponent for the quarter-finals would come from.
If the German brings his powerful serve to the court again, there should be little standing in the way of another victory. It would then be Alexander Zverev’s 18th win in the last 20 singles matches, which underlines the impressive form the two-time world champion is currently in again
Cameron Norrie – Alexander Zverev head-to-head comparison / H2H record
Head to head: 0:5
Cameron Norrie beat the German superstar twice on the ATP Challenger Tour over ten years ago. However, since both players have been competing on the ATP Tour, all five meetings have always gone to Alexander Zverev, who therefore leads the direct comparison convincingly and only just knocked the Briton out of the competition 3:1 in the round of 16 of the Australian Open 2024
Cameron Norrie – Alexander Zverev tip
Relatively clear is our prediction for Cameron Norrie against Alexander Zverev, the next unchallenged victory for the German superstar, who currently has 17 wins from his last 19 singles matches after two smooth 3-0 victories at Wimbledon. His British opponent is certainly adept on grass, as evidenced by his semi-final appearance at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. However, the previous five meetings between the two athletes on the ATP Tour were mostly very one-sided affairs, which must also be factored into the assessment of this match
Since the odds for the normal win bet promise little value for Cameron Norrie against Alexander Zverev, we recommend the bet that the German will win with a lead of at least seven games (handicap: -6.5 games). We play this bet with four units at odds of 2.00 at Bet-at-home
