Will Eintracht remain unbeaten?
It was certainly one of the most enjoyable periods in coach Niko Kovac’s career, when he was able to build a team in Mainhatten that laid the foundations for the Hessen’s further successes, including their Europa League triumph. On Saturday, he awaits his former club and there is little room for old allegiances. In our Wolfsburg vs Frankfurt tip, we look at whether the VfL coach will keep the three points against Eintracht at home.
The Wolves have had the slightly better start to the new season. With nine points, the Lower Saxons are in seventh place in the top flight after five games. VfL are still within touching distance of the top six in the league and could move into the top third with a win on Saturday. The statistics are encouraging, however, that a home win could be on the cards.
VfL Wolfsburg have not won more professional matches against any other club than against Eintracht Frankfurt. Moreover, the Wolves have always scored in the last 21 games against the Hessians. That sounds as if the forecast in the duel between Wolfsburg and Frankfurt should go to a home win. However, that is only one side of the coin.
Low odds are offered on a home win than on an away win at betting provider Interwetten, but Eintracht are still unbeaten this season. The problem is that Dino Toppmöller’s eleven share the points too often and therefore have to settle for eighth place after five matchdays and seven points at the moment. Conversely, this means that two neighbours in the table meet in a direct duel.
Wolfsburg – Statistics & current form
Last season, VfL Wolfsburg got off to a very poor start to the season. After five games, the Lower Saxons had just two points on their account. This year things are looking much better. With nine points, the Wolves have a whopping seven more points to their name. On Saturday, Niko Kovac’s team must try to improve on their good start to the season so far.
Make-less at the Volkswagen Arena
Even at home things have gone exceptionally well so far. The Wolves have started the season with two home wins and have a clean sheet in front of their own crowd. Only three times in their own Bundesliga history have the Lower Saxons managed to win the first three home games. At the very least, you should look at the odds for a three-pointer for the home side in the match between Wolfsburg and Frankfurt.
However, we don’t necessarily expect many goals in this duel, as VfL Wolfsburg have given up just 55 shots on goal in their first five games of the season. But that includes everything that even came close to the opponent’s goal. Only Eintracht Frankfurt has shot on goal less often. Perhaps that is an indication that fewer than 2.5 goals will be scored.
Last week, VfL Wolfsburg remained goalless for the first time this season. Jonas Wind, who was involved in six of his team’s seven goals this season (five goals, one assist), could not change that. In Dortmund, Niko Kovac’s team put in a decent performance, but in the end they were beaten 0:1 and if you look at the shares of the game, it was a narrow but deserved victory for BVB.
Predicted Wolfsburg line-up:
VfL Wolfsburg (Expected line-up) 4-2-3-1
Frankfurt – Statistics & current form
Dino Toppmöller has had a very nice series with Eintracht as their new coach. Toppmöller has been unbeaten with Frankfurt for nine games. His father Klaus once conceded his first defeat with the Adler in his ninth game. Only Dietrich Weise (nine unbeaten games) and Armin Veh (13 games without defeat) have started their task with the Hessians just as well or better.
Eintracht still unbeaten
This record of the new coach also means that Eintracht are still undefeated in the Bundesliga after five matchdays, making them only one of four teams that have not yet left the pitch as losers (alongside Bayern, BVB and Bayer 04). It will get to Eintracht at some point, but for now it all sounds like you have to make a prediction between Wolfsburg and Frankfurt on the visitors winning a point.
But you also have to see that Frankfurt’s programme was not particularly demanding. Of course, you have to be on your guard against every opponent in the Bundesliga, but so far there have been no opponents who are currently in the top 8 of the table. Instead, it was against Darmstadt, Mainz and Cologne. These are the three teams that are currently in the relegation places. Maybe that’s why the yield of one win and four draws in the top flight is a bit too little.
Last week’s 0-0 draw at home to SC Freiburg was another less than spectacular performance by the Hessians. At least the SGE remained without conceding a goal in the calendar year 2023. On the other hand, Eintracht are still waiting for an away win this year and have not even scored in their last 22 Bundesliga matches. The last time that happened to Frankfurt was over 20 years ago. Perhaps they can turn things around this year, as the Hessians currently have the best defence in the league, conceding just three goals.
Predicted Frankfurt line-up:
Eintracht Frankfurt (Expected line-up) 3-4-2-1
Wolfsburg – Frankfurt Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
For the 50th time in total, VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt meet this Saturday. The direct comparison speaks quite clearly in favour of the Wolves, who are 22:10 ahead after victories. 16 games ended in a draw. In Wolfsburg, the Hessians only managed four wins in 24 games, a record that can certainly be improved.
Eintracht has now waited four games for a win against the Wolves. Last season, VfL first won 1-0 in Mainhatten, while the return match at the Volkswagen Arena ended in a draw. Omar Marmoush and Yannick Gerhardt scored for VfL in the 2-2 draw. Randal Kolo Muani and Evan Ndicka were successful for Frankfurt. All the goals came before the break in March.
Wolfsburg – Frankfurt Tip
VfL Wolfsburg have certainly not had an easy programme in this still young season, but they have come out of it pretty well. Especially at home things are going well. Both home games have been won so far and they have been able to rely on Jonas Wild’s goals in particular. However, that might also make the Lower Saxons a little predictable.
Nevertheless, they are favourites on Saturday against Eintracht, who have not lost yet this season, but have drawn far too many times, most recently four times in a row in the top flight. The Hessians have scored the fewest goals, but also conceded the fewest.
Generally speaking, there is not much to suggest that VfL will take the three points on Saturday. But we think the visitors are very stable. We don’t expect a spectacular match and assume not only that there will be few goals, but also that Eintracht will remain unbeaten. We can well imagine a 0:0 or even a 1:1 and have decided to play the betting odds on a draw between Wolfsburg and Frankfurt.
