Will the Hammers get an important point?

While West Ham United are currently struggling to avoid relegation in the Premier League, city rivals Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to qualify for the Champions League once again.

Currently, Spurs are two points behind fourth place. Accordingly, it would be important for the Lilywhites that Tottenham v West Ham Tip 1 pans out and they don’t lose the tie.

Lastly, Spurs have suffered four defeats in their last seven Premier League games (three wins) – as many as in their previous 22 league games (13 wins, five draws). This contrasts with the Hammers, who recently remained unbeaten in three games in a row (one win, two draws). Accordingly, it is difficult to make a prediction on the outcome of the match between Tottenham and West Ham.

In principle, there is a lot to be said for a home win for Spurs, but they also suffered a setback in the Champions League during the week following their recent failures in the Premier League, losing 1-0 at AC Milan. The Irons, on the other hand, had a week to prepare for the London derby.

The most sustainable bet in our eyes seems to be that a maximum of two goals will be scored in this city duel. After all, West Ham have conceded only three goals in their last six competitive matches and never more than one goal per game, while Spurs have also scored only two goals in total in their last three competitive matches.

Tottenham – Statistics & current form

Tottenham Hotspur were pioneers in England in many ways. They were the first team to win the national double of championship and FA Cup (1960/61). And Tottenham was also the first British club to win a European cup, the European Cup Winners’ Cup, in 1963.

In the last decade, too, the Lilywhites were always in the mix and played for titles, but could neither end the long drought without a championship nor come out on top in the 2019 Champions League final.

Lost four of last seven league games

As the new season begins, the north Londoners occupy only fifth place after 23 games played and, as things stand, would have missed out on re-qualifying for the top flight, where they suffered a setback in their battle for the quarter-finals during the week. Spurs lost 1-0 away to AC Milan.

There were also several setbacks in the Premier League. The Lilywhites have lost four of their last seven league games (three wins). That is the same number of defeats as in the 22 Premier League games before (13 wins, five draws).

Already eleven goals from corner kicks

The forward play in particular has faltered recently. Apart from the 3-0 away win in the FA Cup at the underclass club Preston North End, Tottenham have not scored more than one goal per game in any of their last five competitive matches. Accordingly, our tip for Tottenham against West Ham is that the London derby will be rather low-scoring.

The Lilywhites have the advantage of scoring from corner kicks. No other team in the Premier League scored more goals from corners in 2022/23 than Spurs (eleven already). However, West Ham United, of all clubs, are the only Premier League club to have gone the 2022/23 season without conceding a goal from a corner.

West Ham – Statistics & current form

West Ham United are a long way from the strong finishes of recent years, but have managed to regain some composure of late. The players from London’s East End, who have finished sixth and seventh in the last two league tables under David Moyes, are still primarily fighting to stay in the league.

The Irons have only won five of their first 22 league games, leaving them just two points clear of the first relegation spot. Consequently, a point in the London derby with Spurs would be worth its weight in gold.

Five points out of a possible nine from the last three league games

David Moyes’ side certainly have the momentum going into this game. West Ham United have gone unbeaten in three straight games (one win, two draws) and have picked up five vital points in their fight to stay in the league – as many points as they had in their previous ten league games (one win, two draws, seven defeats).

Combined with wins over Brentford and Derby Country in the FA Cup, the Irons have lost just one of their last seven competitive games (three wins, three draws). Despite this, however, Tottenham v West Ham betting odds are swinging in Spurs’ favour in all forms.

Only conceded three goals in last six competitive matches

It is true to say that things have not gone too well for the Hammers against Tottenham recently. Only two of the last ten London derbies in the Premier League were won against Spurs (three draws, five defeats).

However, the Hammers’ new-found defensive stability speaks for itself. In the last six competitive matches, they have conceded a total of just three goals, with none of these games allowing more than one goal per match. It is therefore not out of the question that the Irons, who have lost five recent London derbies away from home in the Premier League, will score again at the stadium of a city rival for the first time.

Tottenham – West Ham Direct comparison / H2H balance

Head to head: 100 – 54 – 66

There have been a total of 220 meetings between the two London teams so far and with 100 wins Tottenham lead the direct comparison very clearly. Spurs are currently unbeaten in three derbies with the Hammers (two wins, one draw). The last clash on 31 August 2022 ended 1-1.

Tottenham – West Ham Tip

When it comes to Tottenham vs West Ham, the odds are swinging in the direction of the hosts, which is quite a bold assessment. After all, the Hammers are unbeaten in three league games and have lost only one of their last seven competitive matches. This compares to Spurs, who not only lost 1-0 at AC Milan during the week, but have also suffered four defeats in their last seven Premier League games.

With the Hammers arriving with renewed defensive stability while the Lilywhites have struggled to score goals of late, it makes the most sense to predict under 2.5 goals for Tottenham against West Ham. That also covers most eventualities in terms of results.
