Can Aston Villa stay at the top?

On Sunday, 03/11/2024, Tottenham Hotspurs and Aston Villa will face each other in the English Premier League. In terms of the table, the guests seem to be favored in this game, because while the Villans are in fourth place, the Spurs are only in eighth place. Nevertheless, the bookmakers’ odds speak relatively clearly for a home win. Why this is the case can be found in our Tottenham vs. Aston Villa prediction.

We believe that the results in the cup played a decisive role in the odds distribution. The Spurs were able to win against reigning champions Manchester City during the week and thus set an exclamation mark. At the same time, the guests lost a game they thought they had already won against Crystal Palace. Based on the momentum, the Tottenham vs. Aston Villa tip seems to suggest a home win. However, we want to take a closer look at the two teams before drawing a conclusion.

The highest Tottenham vs. Aston Villa odds for a victory of the favorite can be found at the bookmaker Bet-at-home, which we tested. The game will kick off on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium in London. The match can be followed live and in full on Sky or Wow.

Tottenham – Statistics & current form

Tottenham have had a disappointing start to the season overall, with just 13 points from their first nine league games, putting Ange Postecoglou’s team in eighth place. Compared to the previous season, this is of course sobering, because in the 2023/2024 season, Spurs were able to secure fifth place and thus participation in the Europa League. On the other hand, the home side have only four points less than Chelsea. So the international places are still within reach.

Should it not be enough for the host to participate in the international competitions via the Premier League, they could also qualify for the premier class by winning the Europa League. There, Ange Postecoglou’s team made a strong impression and won the first three games. As a result, the Spurs are currently in second place and are therefore also among the favorites in this tournament. The season could still go either way and perhaps even end with a long-awaited title.

Tottenham rarely without a goal

With 28 goals in 14 competitive games (Ø 2.00), Ange Postecoglou’s team is hard to stop. For this reason, Tottenham have only been without a goal of their own twice this season, finding the way into the opposing goal in 86% of the games. Brennan Johnson deserves special mention here, as the 23-year-old midfielder has already scored six goals. This is quite surprising, because in the entire previous season, the Welsh international scored only five goals. His form curve is therefore pointing steeply upwards.

Tottenham too vulnerable from time to time

Tottenham have only conceded 13 goals in 14 games this season (Ø 0.93) and are therefore in a very solid position. Nevertheless, the home side kept a clean sheet only four times, conceding at least one goal in 71% of the matches. Especially in the important games, such as against Newcastle United, Arsenal or Brighton, the defensive performance was anything but good. For this very reason, it is also very likely that Guglielmo Vicario will have to pick the ball out of the net at least once in the game against Aston Villa.

Aston Villa – Statistics & current form

In contrast to the hosts, Aston Villa can look back on the start of the season very positively. Unai Emery’s team picked up 18 points from their first nine league games and are thus in one of the four Champions League places. However, with Chelsea, Brighton and Nottingham Forest lurking, three teams are waiting for the Villans to make a mistake and could overtake them as early as the next matchday. But that doesn’t change the fact that the guests are once again among the contenders for the premier class this season.

The away team is already active there this year and is currently even leading the CL with nine out of a possible nine points. In doing so, the English team defeated the great FC Bayern Munich and even managed to keep a clean sheet. Apart from their elimination in the EFL Cup against Crystal Palace, everything is going according to plan for Aston Villa. When we consider that the AVFC were still in the English second division in 2019, it is quite impressive what the club and Unai Emery have achieved in such a short time.

Aston Villa have plenty of attacking power

With 25 goals in 14 competitive games (Ø 1.79), the away team’s offense is also very dangerous and almost on a par with Spurs’ forward line. It is therefore not surprising that Unai Emery’s team has also only gone two games without scoring. This is primarily due to Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins, who have scored 13 goals between them. If we add the assists, the forward duo has been directly involved in 16 of the 25 goals and thus in 64% of all goals. This is, of course, an outstanding figure.

Slight problems in defense

While the offense is able to score against any opponent, the defense of the away team has to struggle with slight problems from time to time. For this reason, Unai Emery’s team in the Premier League only kept a clean sheet twice and thus conceded at least one goal in 78% of the league games. For this reason, we find it hard to imagine that Aston Villa will get a clean sheet against Tottenham. The offensive quality of the Spurs is simply too high for that.

Tottenham – Aston Villa direct comparison / H2H record

In the pure team analysis, we could not yet identify a favorite, but what about in the direct comparison? Here, Spurs are definitely ahead, winning 78 of 174 duels. The Villans currently have only 60 wins, with the remaining 36 games ending in a draw. In the recent past, however, AV has held its own well, winning three of the last four duels. For this reason, we believe that the distribution of Tottenham v Aston Villa betting odds is not entirely conclusive.

Tottenham – Aston Villa Tip

We recommend the Tottenham vs. Aston Villa betting tip for “both teams to score – yes”. Both teams are extremely well staffed on the offensive side and have rarely gone without scoring this season. In addition, the home and away records of both clubs look similarly good, so we can expect a duel on equal terms here. Furthermore, both teams were able to score in two of the last three encounters. So there is currently no reason why this trend should not continue.
Alternatively, we recommend the Tottenham vs. Aston Villa odds for 2-4 goals in the game. Since we expect a goal on both sides of the field, the tip for over 1.5 goals is self-explanatory. On the other hand, the two teams are quite solid defensively, so a goal festival is rather unlikely. In addition, this betting tip has been successful in 13 of the last 14 duels and therefore seems to be quite promising.
