Déjà vu for CD Tenerife?

It was just two months ago that the two clubs met in the Spanish second division. Now the match between Tenerife vs. Eibar is also scheduled in the round of the last 64 in the Copa del Red. As in the league, the club from the Canary Islands will also benefit from home advantage this time.

The last time the two clubs played each other at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez, it was a narrow victory for the visitors from the Basque Country. Nevertheless, SD Eibar is only the underdog in the cup match on Wednesday evening. With Tenerife vs. Eibar, odds of up to 3.40 are available for tip 2.

The Canary Islands host’s role as favourites comes as something of a surprise. CD Tenerife have been winless after 90 minutes in their last three competitive matches, including the cup match against Ibiza Islas Pitiusas, in which Tenerife only managed to beat their lower-class opponents in extra time.

The visitors from the Basque country, on the other hand, have not won a single away game in the second division since the away coup in Tenerife. Most recently, the Basque representative even remained winless on foreign soil four times in a row.

Tenerife – Statistics & current form

CD Tenerife stayed out of the promotion race in the second division last season, and at times the Canary Islands club were even in danger of relegation. The start of the 2021/22 season is therefore all the more pleasing, especially as Tenerife are already in one of the four starting places for the promotion play-offs after 20 match days.

Because the Chicharreros are separated by only one point from second-placed Ponferradina, they still have a realistic chance of direct promotion to the Spanish top flight. So far, CD Tenerife have lost only five of their 20 games in La Liga 2. Two of the five defeats were at home for the Chicharreros.

At home, CD Tenerife have a record of 6-2-2 after ten home games, and have not lost a single match since the league defeat to upcoming opponents SD Eibar. Meanwhile, Tenerife have been unbeaten for five home matches in a row. The club from the Canary Islands even won four of the last five home matches.

Tenerife are eager for revenge

Tenerife lost a home game against SD Eibar for the first time in the club’s history almost two months ago. Before that, the Chicharreros had a total of four wins and five draws in nine home games. It is quite possible that this will be continued at least in the upcoming cup match.

In the last two years, Tenerife have reached the last 64 in the cup. The last time the Canary Islands club was eliminated prematurely – in the second round of the cup, mind you – was in the 2018/19 season. In terms of tendency, it is therefore not far-fetched to make a prediction on the hosts in Tenerife vs Eibar.

Head coach Luis Miguel Ramis will only have to do without Nahuel, Lasso and Alonso for the home match against Eibar due to injury. There are no other absentees for the fourth-placed La Liga 2 side.

Predicted Tenerife line-up:
Soriano – Munoz, Leon, Sipcic, Moore – Zorrilla, Larrea, Herrero, Diez – Gallego, Shashoua

Eibar – Statistics & current form

Last season SD Eibar were relegated from the top flight. After seven seasons in the top flight of Spanish football, the Azulgranas were relegated to the second division for the first time. As expected, Eibar is one of the narrow circle of potential promotion candidates in La Liga 2.

So far, the club from the Basque country has had a promising start to the season and is even in third place in the second division after 20 match days. Because the Azulgranas only picked up one point on the last two matchdays, their promotion rivals Ponferradina passed the Basques to move up to second place.

Nevertheless, there is a good starting position in the table for the rest of the season to realise the mission of “re-promotion”. The Azulgranas have already picked up 23 of a possible 36 points in their own stadium so far this season. However, only 13 points have been earned away from home, where SD Eibar have stumbled, particularly in recent away games.

Does the away misery continue at SD Eibar?

Since the away coup at Tenerife, the Basques’ upcoming cup opponents, they have failed to win four away games in a row. Eibar have even lost two of their last four away games in that period, including their last away match against Real Zaragoza. In contrast to Wednesday’s opponents from the Canaries, Eibar at least mastered the last cup hurdle with flying colours.

SD Eibar won 2-1 away from home against their Basque rivals from Gernika-Lumo. If the next away win in the Copa del Rey beckons, Tenerife vs. Eibar odds of 3.40 are paid out for a bet on the visitors from the Basque Country. Since the 2013/14 season, the Azulgranas have always reached at least the last 32.

Head coach Gaizka Garitano will have to do without “oldie” Fernando Llorente and Franchu for the cup match in Tenerife. Meanwhile, there are no other absentees for the Basque visitors.

Predicted line-up of Eibar:
Rodriguez – Garcia, Arbilla, Etxeita, Tejero – Munoz, Alvarez – Stoichkov, Exposito, Corpas – Blanco

12/11 2021 – Eibar 2 – 2 Malaga

12/06 2021 – Real Zaragoza 1 – 0 Eibar

12/02 2021 – SD Gernika 1 – 2 Eibar

LaLiga2
11/29 2021 – Eibar 4 – 2 Girona

11/21 2021 – Lugo 2 – 2 Eibar

Tenerife – Eibar Direct comparison / H2H balance

In the first leg of the current season, SD Eibar prevailed in Tenerife for the first time in the club’s history. Prior to that, there had not been a single away win in nine attempts at their Canary Islands opponents. CD Tenerife nevertheless lead the direct comparison against the Basques with a record of 8-10-4.

Tenerife have won four of their eight matches at home, where the Chicharreros have a 4-5-1 record against SD Eibar. Before the recent defeat to the Azulgranas from Eibar, Tenerife had two consecutive wins against the Basque club.

Tenerife – Eibar Tip

Tenerife are confident going into the cup match against SD Eibar and are banking on home advantage at the “Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López”. After all, the Chicharreros have not lost a single competitive match at home since October 2021. Tenerife even won four of the last five home games. Only the last home game against Lugo resulted in a draw.

Although Eibar won their last away game in Tenerife, there are few arguments in favour of another away win. After all, the Azulgranas have not won any of their last four away games in La Liga 2, including the recent away defeat at Zaragoza.

Tendentiously, therefore, we think a move for CD Tenerife into the next Copa del Rey cup round is a close call. For Tenerife vs. Eibar, our betting odds are 2.40 on a home win. We are betting a total of five units.

Alternatively, we recommend betting on a low-scoring encounter in the cup match between the two second-division teams. After all, only one goal was scored in the first match of the season in Tenerife
