Tommasi, referee spokesman at Open Var broadcast on Dazn: “There is no contact between Sulemana and Dumfries, the Var should have intervened on the contact between Frattesi and Scalvini. The decisions made in Udine and Como were right.”

From the San Siro controversy to the much-discussed expulsion of Wesley in Como-Roma, there were many controversial episodes in the last Serie A round. Dino Tommasi, a member of the refereeing commission, analyzed them to Open Var. First, the contact between Sulemana and Dumfries. “There is no push, the hand is just resting. And also on the low contact there is no type of foul, while the falling contact is not foul. The decision on the field is correct and also well analyzed in the Var room, where all hypotheses are evaluated.” On the other hand, Tommasi’s opinion on the possible penalty caused by Scalvini’s intervention on Frattesi and not sanctioned is different. “The Var room quickly endorses the referee’s choice. Frattesi anticipates Scalvini, remains in a position to play the ball and suffers a kick: this is a penalty. We have had similar ones before. If Manganiello is covered by the bodies and cannot assess the extent of the contact, the Var must intervene with a dutiful ofr.”

For the top referees, however, the right call was made when Wesley was sent off in Como-Roma. “Var and Avar immediately try to verify the possibility of a mistaken identity (i.e., an exchange to verify that the foul was not committed by the other defender). The contact occurs between Wesley’s knee and Diao’s right leg, so they endorse Massa’s choice, supported by the field, and a resulting SPA (Interruption of a promising attacking action) ensues. The moment the referee blows the whistle it is automatic yellow because if he assesses the situation as foul (SPA) the second yellow is correct and from the field, by dynamics, it is a sustainable choice.”

Goal annulled to Juve-  Finally, the protest of Juventus. Spalletti had protested following the goal canceled to Conceiçao for offside by Koopmeiners who, according to the Certaldo coach, did not impact the action. The Var room advises Mariani ofr for possible no goal. The referee is pointed out that “there are criteria for punishability.” The director cancels and explains, “He makes a movement that impacts, he is in front of the goalkeeper.” And to the Juve players he says, “We have annulled all of these this year.” Tommasi agrees with the final decision: “Yes, there are all the parameters: the distance of the shot, the position of the attacker, who here is even inside the area, the proximity to the goalkeeper, and the movement on the ball to take his leg off.”
