Portugal vs. Ireland Tip & Quotas, 01.09.2021 – 20:45 – World Cup Qualification Europe
Five years later, the 2016 European Champion was unable to defend his title in the final round of the European Championships a few weeks ago and, on balance, also showed a disappointing performance in the pan-European EURO.
The Irish didn’t even participate in the European Championships and look back on a more successful time at the World Championships anyway. The boys in Green played in three World Championship finals and always qualified for at least the sixteen finals. The last World Championship in which Ireland participated was almost 20 years ago.
In advance, the Portugal – Ireland betting odds are expected to be in favour of the hosts. Is a tip on the Portuguese worthwhile or should one rather consider the handicap bets? Will Portugal eventually accept the cut? The following lines provide information about this.
(Status of the quotas: 30.08.2021, 4:30 pm)
The national team of Fernando Santos could not defend the European Championship title, although the Selecao survived the preliminary round in the horror group. As in the 2016 European Championship victory, the Portuguese were one of the fourth best group thirds in the sixteen finals. In the round of the last 16 teams, however, Belgium lost 0-1. In the preliminary round there was the only victory against Hungary (3:0). This was followed by a 2-4 defeat against Germany and a split against world champion France (2-2). On the way to the first title of the Portuguese national team in 2016, there was only one win after 90 minutes – in the semi-final, Wales were forced to their knees with 2-0 and then won 1-0 in the final against host France after extra time.
The 2018 World Cup in Russia was just as disappointing as the EURO a few weeks ago. After a 1-2 draw against Uruguay, the game ended in the last sixteen. During the group phase, the Selecao remained undefeated, even depriving the Spaniards of a 3-3 victory. There were four points against Morocco (1:0) and Iran (1: 1).
The Santos team is still undefeated in the current World Cup qualification and scored seven points in the home game against Azerbaijan (1:0) and twice away in Serbia (2:2) and Luxembourg (3:1). In the last qualifying round in Luxembourg, Diogo Jota (45th +2rd), Cristiano Ronaldo (50th) and Joao Palhinha (80th) scored the goals for Portugal. After half an hour, the favourite came back 0-1, but turned the game around confidently in the end.
Diogo Jota is the best scorer in the national jersey of Portugal with three hits in the World Cup quali. Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Palhinha each entered the scoring list once.
Joao Felix and Renato Sanches will be out of action next Wednesday in Faro in the Algarve Stadium due to injury. The use of CR7 is still uncertain. The superstar has been injured on the arm for almost a week.

The island footballers had to play extra time for the EURO 2021 and were given the last chance by the playoff games. However, Ireland lost 2-4 to Slovakia and thus missed the jump into the final round of the European Championship ticket. When Portugal won the European Championship in 2016, the Boys in Green were also present in France and faced Sweden (1:1), Belgium (0:3) and Italy (1:0) in Group E. The sensational victory against the Italians pushed the Irish into the sixteen final, where the host then prevailed with 2:1.
= = = Stephen Kenny = = = Kenny played for Stephen Kenny at three World Cup events. Most recently, however, almost 20 years ago, at the 2002 final in Japan and South Korea. At that time it went into the knockout round against Spain (3:4 a.E.). In the group stage, Ireland remained undefeated against Cameroon (1:1), Germany (1:1) and Saudi Arabia (3:0). At the 1990 World Championship finals in Italy, the group also survived the group phase and reached the quarter-finals. Four years later in the USA, the Irish failed in the last sixteen against Holland.
In the current competition, things are not going well at all and the boys in Green are almost at risk of losing out after three matchdays, should the qualifying game in Portugal also be lost. The first two games in Group A in Serbia (2:3) and at home against Luxembourg (0:1) were lost. The home defeat against Luxembourg was unexpected and puts the Irish team in a dilemma. Only the friendly games this year were pleasing – against Qatar (1:1), Andorra (4:1) and Hungary (0:0) Ireland remained undefeated. The number zero in Hungary at the beginning of June was Ireland’s last international match to date.
James Collins and Alan Browne are responsible for the two goals in the World Championship qualification with one booth each.
Ireland does not have to complain about blockages or injuries and is well placed to travel to Portugal.

Portugal is clear favourites against Ireland for the next three points in the World Cup qualification. Despite the weak European Championship a few weeks ago and the missed title defence, the chances for the third victory in the fourth qualifying game are very good. The Santos men enjoy home advantage and also have the better national team in terms of quality.
For the boys in Green, the pressure is already enormous after the two opening defeats including Peinlich’s defeat against Luxembourg. In the event of another defeat, the Kenny team will again only be threatened with a couch if a World Cup takes place. It would be the fifth missed World Cup final round in a row for the Irish. We are guessing a work victory for Portugal and therefore also recommend the simple tip on Portugal wins.
The offered Portugal – Ireland betting odds are on average 1.22 to 1.25 when betting on the host. More risky Tippster can alternatively also consider the handicap betting on Portugal wins with HC (-1).
