The play-offs to the Champions League group stage include the duel between the Greek representative Olympiakos Piraeus and the Cypriot team Omonia Nicosia. The first leg between the two teams will take place on Wednesday 23 September at 21:00 at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus. The Greeks have the right of home on their side. After two years without a title, Olympiakos managed to win the championship in the past season. Only one defeat in 36 match days had to be accepted. In Cyprus the last seven championship titles had gone to Apoel Nicosia. Last season, however, the district rivals managed to call the title their own. Most recently, Omonia Nicosia came in first place in the table. With a record of 13 wins, seven draws and only three defeats, 46 points were scored. As in many other countries, the season was abandoned due to the coronavirus pandemic. Omonia Nicosia can thus feel like a champion again after nine years without a title.
Nicosia already had to survive two laps in qualifying for the top class. The first was played against Legia Warsaw and led to a 2-0 victory in overtime. In the second match of the qualification it was necessary to score points against Red Star Belgrade. Against a local backdrop, the Cypriots went through Michael Lüftner in front after 31 minutes. The guests were unimpressed and were compensated shortly before the break by Mirko Ivanic. Further hits should no longer involve regular play time or overtime. In the penalty shootout, Nicosia finally prevailed 4-2 and entered the playoffs.
In recent years, Omonia has not been on the international scene and has thus been able to focus on its national business. In this season, Henning Berg’s team is unbeaten after four match days and looks forward to a record of two wins and two draws. The last match day brought a narrow 2-1 victory against AEK Larnaca. The team occupies the third place in the table with eight points taken.
