Does Chelsea also outclass the newly rich Newcastle?

Everyone can think what they like about the new investors at Newcastle United. But at least the new bosses from Saudi Arabia cannot be accused of making a snap decision on the coaching position. More than a week after Steve Bruce was sacked, the Magpies have still not been able to present a successor. Prominent names such as Lucien Favre, Paulo Fonseca and Frank Lampard have been bandied about in the media, but interim coach Graeme Jones will once again take his place on the bench on Saturday afternoon.

It’s quite possible that the new owners of the Black and Whites won’t want to burn their new coach either, after all it’s quite likely that the North East kickers will get the short end of the stick this weekend. This is also underlined by the odds of the bookmakers with a German licence. The front-runners from the capital are rightly being treated as the heavy favourites.

At the top, just 1.39 beckons for an away win for the leaders, who have won all of their last three Premier League games and also have a good record of five wins from the past six direct duels against their upcoming opponents. All in all, there is a lot to be said for betting on the Blues in the Newcastle vs Chelsea clash. However, alternative bets will need to be identified to push the odds up a little.

Newcastle – Statistics & current form

Newcastle United are aiming high in the next few years. After the takeover by a Saudi consortium, the Magpies are already one of the “richest” clubs in the world. So now it is up to the sporting leaders to strengthen the team in the near and medium term so that the high ambitions of the investors are fulfilled. In the north-east of England, people are already dreaming of the Champions League and the title race in the Premier League…

The reality, however, is quite different and is a relegation battle in the English top flight. If the season ended today, the Black and Whites would have to take the bitter step into the second division. Only four points were recorded in the first nine match days. The penultimate team in the standings has been waiting in vain for a win. If they fail to record a win on Saturday, it will be only the third time in the club’s history that the first ten matchdays have ended without a full success.

Will Newcastle also be hosting an open day on Saturday?

The biggest problem is still the defence. They have conceded 20 goals so far. Only bottom-placed Norwich City have conceded more than the Magpies, who will once again have Graeme Jones in charge as interim coach this weekend. On his debut the previous week, the newly-rich relegation candidate at least managed a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace. It is quite possible that his first home game against the Blues will also be his last as boss. The English press expects a succession solution by next week at the latest.

In view of the low level of confidence and the weak home record with two points from four games and already ten goals conceded, we cannot imagine that the tip for a surprise coup by the home side will go through between Newcastle and Chelsea. The absences of Dubravka, Woodman and Dummett due to injury also speak in favour of this.

Predicted Newcastle line-up:
Darlow; Krafth, Lascelles, Clark; Manquillo, Hayden, Willock, Almiron, Ritchie; Wilson, Saint-Maximin

Chelsea – Statistics & current form

In the previous week, we still doubted whether Chelsea Football Club will be able to compensate for the absences of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner. With a more than commanding 7-0 home win against bottom side Norwich City, the reigning Champions League winners gave the right answer on the pitch and thus also maintained their position at the top of the Premier League table.

With a remarkable record of seven wins, one draw and only one defeat, no other team has collected more points than Thomas Tuchel’s team. Their form has also been very impressive, with three consecutive trebles in the English top flight and a goal difference of 11-1 in that period.

Defence remains the showpiece of the Tuchel eleven

As was the case on the way to the 2020/21 trophy, the outstanding defence is clearly the strongest part of the team in the current season. French keeper Mendy has conceded just three goals in the Premier League so far. Six of the seven victories have been won without conceding a goal. It may therefore be an option to check the odds on the “to-nil” victory between Newcastle and Chelsea.

Alternatively, it is also conceivable to place a bet on the favourite to win both halves. After all, this approach has already been crowned with success four times in the current Premier League season. Qualitatively, the Tuchel eleven is much stronger.

Moreover, it became clear in the previous week that offensively not everything hinges on the two injured star strikers. Already 14 different goal scorers have registered for the Blues in 2021/22. In addition, the German coach can of course still count on Mason Mount. The international scored three times against Norwich, underlining his great form, which has actually been going on since the former BVB coach took over. Mount has already been involved in eleven league goals since Tuchel arrived!

Predicted Chelsea line-up:
Mendy; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Silva; James, Jorginho, Kante, Chilwell; Mount, Hudson-Odoi; Havertz

Newcastle – Chelsea Direct comparison / H2H balance

For the 139th time, these two teams will face each other in England’s top flight this weekend. Chelsea lead the direct comparison with 58 wins compared to 45 defeats and 35 point splits. Far more interesting, however, is the look at the recent past, which shows the Blues as winners in five of the last six duels against the Magpies. In 2020/21, the Londoners won both the first and second legs 2-0, with the capital club even winning both halves at St James Park in pre-season. A good omen for the coming Saturday?

Newcastle – Chelsea Tip

In the coming years, Newcastle United will be looking to go toe-to-toe with Chelsea FC. Thanks to the new Saudi investor’s hefty cash injection into the Magpies, this endeavour doesn’t seem hopeless at all. It will be a different story on Saturday afternoon, however, when the signs seem clear. The leaders from London are clearly favoured at St. James Park, second from last in the table.

We agree with this assessment and can understand why the betting odds on an away win between Newcastle and Chelsea are so low. After all, the home side have yet to win a game this season and have conceded the second most goals of all English first division teams. There has never been a clean sheet in 2021/22.

We have therefore decided to bet on the bottom line in the Newcastle vs Chelsea clash that the Tuchel team will win both halves. Although we don’t expect the Blues to score another dominant 7-0 win, as they did the previous week, the chances of a commanding three-goal win are pretty good in our eyes. In what will probably be the last game under interim coach Jones, the unsettled Magpies won’t have much to counter with.
