Successful CL debut for United coach Rangnick?
For the first time, Ralf Rangnick will sit on Manchester United’s bench in European football’s premier league on Wednesday night. His debut as the new head coach of the English record champion was successful in the Premier League at the weekend. Now the “professor”, as he is known in German football circles, also wants to celebrate a positive debut in the Champions League.
This endeavour is under a very good star, because the odds between Manchester United and the Young Boys clearly point in the direction of a home victory. At the top, just 1.41 is offered for the success of the “Red Devils”. If the Swiss manage the away coup, which could possibly enable them to survive the winter in the Europa League, the eightfold stake can be cashed in.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. will probably not lack the necessary ambition. Although it is not out of the question that Rangnick will spare one or two key players in view of the upcoming tasks in the Premier League, the home side have definitely set themselves the goal of taking revenge for the embarrassing defeat in the first leg in Switzerland. The form crisis of Wagner’s team should also play a role in the prediction between Manchester United and the Young Boys.
Manchester United – Statistics & current form
Since the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, a certain momentum has developed at Manchester United. A positive momentum. The English record champions have played four competitive games since then and have not suffered a single defeat, despite the fact that the tasks at Chelsea, Villarreal and at home against Arsenal were not easy ones.
While the pleasing results from the aforementioned three games were all due to the work of the now departed interim coach Michael Carrick, the first game under Ralf Rangnick was also won 1-0 against Crystal Palace at the weekend. In terms of self-confidence, the change of coach has therefore already absolutely paid off.
United want to continue the upward trend
Before the final Champions League match against the Swiss champions, the group victory is already fixed. The home match against the Bernese is therefore only of a statistical nature, although United will certainly be looking for revenge after the 2-1 defeat in the first leg. In addition to the aforementioned form, the fact that the “Red Devils” have recently remained unbeaten in the top flight four times in a row also speaks for a successful redemption. The last time there were five consecutive CL games without a defeat was in 2013/14 under David Moyes.
We expect a home team that will play briskly forward and want to give their own fans a home win at Old Trafford. Qualitatively, the English are stronger, regardless of which players will ultimately be on the pitch. Everything points to a home win between Manchester United and Young Boys.
Rangnick’s team is still full of casualties. Varane, Pogba, Cavani, Shaw and Lingard are all likely to be absent through injury. CR7 is also unlikely to play in the upcoming Premier League matches. Instead, various substitutes and reserves could get their chance from the start. For the youngsters Elanga, Greenwood, van de Beek, Mengi and Co. it is also a matter of convincing the new manager.
Predicted Manchester United line-up:
Henderson; Wan-Bissaka, Mengi, Bailly, Telles; Matic, Van de Beek; Greenwood, Mata, Elanga; Martial

Young Boys – Statistics & current form
David Wagner is not having an easy time at Young Boys in Bern at the moment. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the former Schalke player has to follow in the footsteps of a certain Adi Hütter or Gerardo Seoane. On the other hand, however, it is above all due to the current slump in form that the yellow and black team is experiencing, especially at national level.
Of the last five Super League games, only one was won (two draws, two defeats). At the weekend, they suffered another setback in a painful 2-1 home defeat to Servette Geneva, which has already increased the gap to leaders FC Zurich to nine points. The subscription champions themselves have fallen back to fourth position.
Things are not going well at all for the Young Boys
The uncertainty is great and the defence in particular is in no way living up to the high expectations. Since 03 October, YB have not managed a single clean sheet in the league or in the Champions League. In the Champions League, they have already conceded eleven goals in five games. The yellow and black team has not yet scored a goal away from home on the international stage. It is quite possible that at least that will change on Wednesday evening in the “Theatre of Dreams”.
With regard to the chances of a surprise coup, however, it must be noted that the Bernese have lost all of their last six away games in the European Cup. In general, Swiss clubs have rarely had reason to celebrate on the island in the past. Only two of the last 27 matches in England were won by Super League clubs (eight draws, 17 defeats). Defeat number 18 seems to be a formality on Wednesday evening, at least if you believe the odds between Manchester United and Young Boys.
Predicted Young Boys line-up:
Faivre; Hefti, Burgy, Lauper, Lefort; Aebischer, Martins, Rieder; Elia, Siebatcheu, Ngamaleu

Manchester United – Young Boys Direct comparison / H2H-balance
The two clubs were drawn in a group back in the 2018/19 Champions League season. On that occasion, United prevailed 3-0 in Bern and 1-0 at home. The 2-1 defeat in the first leg of the current preliminary round was thus the first defeat at the third attempt for the English record champions, who were, however, forced to play shorthanded for long stretches of the match in the aforementioned match in mid-September.
Manchester United – Young Boys Tip
Ralf Rangnick’s Champions League debut at Manchester United on Wednesday evening no longer has any great sporting significance. The “Red Devils” are already safely through to the top of the group, while the visitors from Bern can still reach third place at the most. To do so, however, they need a win at Old Trafford on the one hand and a three-goal win for Villarreal in their parallel match at Atalanta Bergamo on the other.
Regardless of the starting position on the sixth matchday in Group F, we expect a lively football match in which the 2.5 goal mark could well fall. On the one hand, of course, because the home side is much stronger in terms of quality and desperately wants to take revenge for the defeat in the first leg. On the other hand, however, also due to the fact that both teams do not have much to lose.
On balance, we expect a relatively commanding home win for United, even if Ralf Rangnick will send an improved C-team onto the pitch. We therefore combine bets on the home win with the aforementioned Over 2.5 and get exciting betting odds of 1.90 at the top between Manchester United and Young Boys.
Alternatively, you can also think about betting on the handicap win -1 of the favourite. YB is in a weak form, while United had a clear upward form curve after the change of coach. A 3:1 or even 4:1 home win is therefore also within the realms of possibility, which is why betting on a home win with a difference of two goals or more before the clash between Manchester United and Young Boys also offers promising value.
