Set a 131-year-old record for the Sky Blues?
For 131 years now, a very special record has been untouchable in England: the record of Sunderland AFC, who won a total of 24 consecutive home games in the country’s top division between 1890 and 1892. The Sky Blues currently have 23 home wins in a row across all competitions. If the tip for a home win for the Citizens at Manchester City against Liverpool pans out, this old record would officially be broken
The fact that the reigning treble winners have only lost one of their last 14 Premier League home games against the Reds (eight wins, five draws) speaks in their favor. However, Jürgen Klopp’s side will travel to the game in good form. LFC have lost just one of their last 23 Premier League games (15 wins, seven draws). This means that the prediction of a home win for the Sky Blues against Liverpool is by no means a foregone conclusion
The two coaches of both teams, who are now facing each other for the 29th time in their careers, are naturally also in the spotlight. The Klopp team has won eleven times, the Guardiola team ten times. In both cases, no other coach in the world can boast more victories against either the German or the Spaniard, who can therefore call each other their nemesis
Manchester City – statistics & current form
Manchester City had an absolutely exceptional season last season. In addition to winning the ninth English championship in the club’s history and the seventh overall victory in the FA Cup, the Sky Blues secured the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever.
As reigning treble winners, the Citizens now face the incredible challenge of building on these successes. So far, however, the 2023/24 season has also been very successful for Pep Guardiola’s side, who not only lead the Premier League but have also booked their ticket to the round of 16 in the top flight ahead of time.
Won all of their last 23 home games
However, the Sky Blues have failed to win three of their last six Premier League games (three wins, one draw, two defeats). That is the same number of games not won as in the 23 Premier League games before that (20 wins, two draws, one defeat). As a result, the lead in the table is somewhat shaky.
With 28 out of a possible 36 points, the Citizens are in first place, but are only one point ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal. If Manchester City’s bet on a historic 24th home win in a row against Liverpool does not work out, either the Reds or the Gunners or perhaps even both teams could overtake Guardiola’s team
Only lost one of the last 14 Premier League home games against Liverpool
The reigning treble winners’ incredible home form is not the only thing in their favor, however, as they have lost just one of their last 14 Premier League home games against LFC (eight wins, five draws).
However, the injury suffered by superstar Erling Haaland during the international break is a clear downer. The Norwegian has already scored 49 times in 47 Premier League games for the Sky Blues and could soon break Andrew Cole’s record for the fastest 50 Premier League goals (65 games), but is out for the important top-of-the-table clash against the Reds.
Predicted Manchester City line-up:
Liverpool – Statistics & current form
Jürgen Klopp has been in charge of Liverpool FC for eight years now. Since then, there have been ground-breaking successes such as the 2019 Champions League, the 2020 league title and the 2022 FA Cup win. Last season, however, the Reds did not manage too much.
For long stretches, LFC even had to fear for their participation in a European competition. In the end, the Scousers finished fifth in the final table and still qualified for the Europa League
Only one defeat in the last 23 Premier League games
At the start of the new season, everyone involved should be all the more relieved that the focus is back on the top. After twelve league games, of which Liverpool have lost just one (eight wins, three draws), the port city side are second in the table. They are just one point behind the Sky Blues.
If the team from the Mersey secure an away win at the reigning treble winners, LFC would overtake Guardiola’s side in the table. However, the odds are against the Scousers in Manchester City v Liverpool, although Klopp’s side have lost just one of their last 23 Premier League games (15 wins, seven draws)
Eleven of the last twelve Premier League defeats have come in away games
The reason for this is the fact that Liverpool are particularly vulnerable away from home. They have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last seven Premier League away games. The Reds have even gone winless in their last three games away from home (two draws, one defeat), with a 3-2 defeat in Toulouse in the Europa League following three wins in the opening round.
In fact, eleven of the last twelve defeats suffered by the Scousers in the Premier League were away games. The visit to the leaders will be correspondingly complicated, even though LFC have at least taken the lead in two of their last three away games with the Sky Blues.
Predicted Liverpool line-up:
Manchester City – Liverpool head-to-head comparison / H2H result
Head to head: 60 – 56 – 108
There have been a total of 224 meetings between the two teams so far and with 108 wins, Liverpool FC have won almost half of them. Most recently, however, the Citizens celebrated two consecutive victories against the Reds, who were also defeated 4-1 in their last Premier League home game on April 1, 2023. However, those were Manchester City’s only two wins in their last seven meetings (two draws, three defeats).
Manchester City – Liverpool betting tip
According to the clear sports betting odds comparison, the betting odds for Manchester City against Liverpool are in favor of the home-strong Citizens, who could now win their 24th home game in a row across all competitions. However, without Erling Haaland, who suffered an ankle injury during the international break, the task will be very difficult, especially as the Reds are in good form and have lost just one of their last 23 Premier League games (15 wins, seven draws).
Moreover, LFC have opened the scoring in two of their last three visits to the Sky Blues, although neither game was ultimately won (1:1 and 1:4). This makes the prediction that both teams will score again in Manchester City v Liverpool all the more consistent
