Which face will Gladbach show on Friday?

No other Bundesliga team is showing two faces as much as Borussia Mönchengladbach this season. Superb performances alternate with disappointing negative performances at regular intervals. The team from the Lower Rhine has still not been able to celebrate two league victories in a row in the current season. That could change on Friday evening, however.

If the betting on an away win between Mainz and Gladbach at the start of the 22nd matchday in the Bundesliga proves correct, Daniel Farke’s side would be able to confirm a win with another treble for the first time. However, because the Foals have been far from convincing away from home so far and have only ever celebrated a single success in an opponent’s stadium, the task at the MEWA Arena also threatens to be a very difficult one.

The fact that the Nullfünfer, under the management of Bo Svensson, have never lost to Borussia and have also played a very successful second half of the season so far speaks in favour of this. In view of the fact that FSV have won three of their four matches since matchday 18, it seems more plausible to make a prediction in favour of the home side before the Mainz vs Gladbach clash. Kick-off is at 20:30 on Friday evening. DAZN will be broadcasting live.

Mainz – Statistics & current form

There is a very moody atmosphere in Mainz at the moment. On the one hand, this was certainly due to the festivities at Fasching, which have become more pronounced again after a longer forced break. On the other hand, however, it was also due to the very promising performances of the Bundesliga team.

Just last Sunday, FSV won a wild away game at Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 and climbed into the top half of the table. Ninth place with a one-point gap to seventh, which could possibly be enough for European Cup participation in 2023/24, is definitely something to be proud of. The Nullfünfer celebrated their third victory in their fourth match of the second round. Only the difficult guest game at the “Alte Försterei” with Union Berlin was narrowly lost with 1:2. In the second-round standings, the Rheinhessen side are in third place behind the Eisern and Dortmund, who are without a loss.

Goals are scored in Mainz games

With a view to the upcoming home match against their neighbours from Mönchengladbach, it is also an advantage that the performances in front of the home crowd have been good lately. Two of the only three wins at home this season have come in the last two matches.

Furthermore, the Red and Whites have not lost any of the last eight Bundesliga home games played on a Friday evening (five wins, three draws). Therefore, if you want to bet on the host keeping at least one point at home again, you can dust off odds of just 1.30 at the top between Mainz and Gladbach.

However, it is also conceivable to combine the double chance 1X with the addition that both teams score. Mainz football currently stands for a lot of spectacle. In the last seven Bundesliga games of FSV, both teams have scored goals. Five times in a row, a bet on the over 2.5 would have gone through. In total, there have been 31 goals in ten home matches, i.e. an average of more than three goals per match in the home stadium.

Gladbach – Statistics & current form

If Borussia from Mönchengladbach could match last Saturday’s performance against FC Bayern week in week out, they would definitely be a candidate for the top six. However, as it occasionally happens that coach Daniel Farke’s team lacks any playfulness, willingness to run and passion, eighth place with a nine-point gap to the sixth-placed team is the bottom-line rather unsatisfactory reality.

Specially away from home, there have been some inexplicable lapses so far this season. A fortnight ago, for example, they lost 4-1 at Hertha Berlin despite a 1-0 lead and were disgraced to the bone in the process.

Gladbach away again with the ugly face?

The Foals have only won one of their ten away games so far. Four draws and five defeats round off the poor record, which is currently only good enough for 14th place in the away table. 20 goals conceded, an average of two per away game, are of course far too many.

The team from the Lower Rhine, meanwhile, has not had a weaker points tally in opposing stadiums since 2008/09. No other Bundesliga team has a greater discrepancy between points scored at home (22) and away (seven) than the former German champions. Unsurprisingly, the odds ahead of the match between Mainz and Gladbach tend to be in favour of the Rheinhessen side.

Perhaps the two most important offensive players for the Rhinelanders at the moment are Lars Stindl and Jonas Hofmann. Captain Stindl, who increasingly took a seat on the bench before the winter break, has already marked four goals in his five matches in the 2023 calendar year and has fired the most shots on goal of his team.

International Hofmann was particularly convincing in the previous week against Bayern, when he was involved in three goals in one match for the third time this season.

Mainz – Gladbach Direct comparison / H2H balance

33 encounters have taken place so far in the Bundesliga. Mainz have come out on top nine times, Gladbach have won on 14 occasions. The points were shared in ten encounters. It is also worth mentioning that Borussia have only lost one of their past eleven matches at the Rheinhessen club. In four games under Bo Svensson, FSV are still unbeaten against the Foals. In the first leg, the Nullfünfer narrowly prevailed 1-0 thanks to a direct free-kick goal by Aaron Martin.

Mainz – Gladbach Tip

Borussia Mönchengladbach will make their next attempt to win two Bundesliga games in a row for the first time this season on Friday evening. However, past experience has already shown that teams who have beaten the great FC Bayern have rarely been able to build on the performance shown a week later.

In our eyes, it is therefore perfectly understandable that lower odds are offered on the home win between Mainz and Gladbach. After all, the Foals have only picked up seven points away from home so far this season and have also failed to win any of their four most recent direct duels against the Rheinhessen side.

Apart from that, the Red and Whites are in very respectable form after three wins from four second-round matches and the 3:2 victory in Leverkusen. We therefore try to bet on a home win before the clash between Mainz and Gladbach and get odds of 2.10 at the top.
