Will the Adler continue their upward flight?

First of all, the 2022/23 season started with minor teething problems for the reigning Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt. Remarkably quickly, however, the Hessians regained their composure. Since the fourth matchday, the SGE has won eight of its eleven league games. No other Bundesliga team has won more often in this period, let alone picked up more points.

The zero-fives have struggled in their own stadium so far. The Rheinhessen side have won only one of their six home games at the Mewa Arena, leaving them in a direct relegation spot in the Bundesliga home table. Most recently, they lost three league games in a row for only the second time under Bo Svensson.

On the other hand, the Eagles are in good form, having won seven of their last eight competitive matches. The forecast for the next away win for Mainz against Frankfurt is accordingly coherent, with the Hessians having already picked up 13 points in seven Bundesliga away games – their best haul away from home since the 1993/94 season.

Mainz – Statistics & current form

Not only did 1. FSV Mainz 05 finish a respectable eighth in the final table of the 2021/22 season, but they also got off to a good start in the new season. The Nullfünfer initially collected ten out of a possible 15 points from their first five league matches, winning all of their first three away games.

However, things then got mixed for the Rheinhessen side. Between the ninth and eleventh matchday, there was a small run with seven of nine possible points and 9:1 goals. Then, however, they lost three league games in a row again.

First in the table after a negative run

Zero points and 2:10 goals, were the results in the last two weeks.

Not only did Mainz fail to score twice in a row, but they also lost their strength away from home. They lost 1-0 at bottom side Schalke, of all teams, on Wednesday evening.

As a result, FSV slipped to eleventh place in the table and must put any thoughts of European competition on hold for the time being. Instead, the zero-fives have to be careful not to be dragged down to the bottom of the table in the course of a longer-term downward slide.

The worst home offensive in the Bundesliga

The Svensson eleven must improve especially in their own stadium. So far, only one of six league games has been won at the Mewa Arena (three draws, two defeats), which puts the Rheinhessen side in 17th place in the Bundesliga home table. Moreover, no team has scored fewer goals at home than FSV (seven goals).

Although the home record against the SGE is quite respectable – the Rheinhessen side have only lost one of their last 14 Bundesliga home games against the Adler (six wins, seven draws) – the odds are slightly in favour of the visitors when it comes to Mainz against Frankfurt.

Frankfurt – Statistics & current form

In recent years, Eintracht Frankfurt have always been in the upper third of the Bundesliga table in the fight for a Champions League spot. However, because strong performances could never be maintained over the entire season, the premiere in the top flight was still a long time coming.

Last season, too, the SGE only finished eleventh in the final table, but then won the Europa League and punched its ticket to the Champions League. Because important key players like Filip Kostic could not be retained, everything pointed to a complicated season.

Won eight of the last eleven league games

But instead, new signings like Randal Kolo Muani and Mario Götze, who recently even made the DFB squad for the 2022 World Cup, hit the ground running. Not only did the Eagles make it through their Champions League preliminary round in one piece and into the round of 16, but they are also in the thick of things in the Bundesliga.

After a brief start, the Hessians collected 24 of 33 possible points from the last eleven league games. No other team won more often (eight times) or collected more points in this period.

13 out of a possible 18 points from six Bundesliga away games

One of the great strengths of the Hessians is their performance in foreign stadiums. Not only did Eintracht reach the last 16 in the Champions League with a 2-1 away win in Lisbon, but the team from the Main metropolis also managed to record 13 of 18 possible points away from home in the Bundesliga – the best yield since 1993/94.

Accordingly, there is a lot of value in betting on the next away win for Mainz against Frankfurt, who are virtually unstoppable, especially offensively. Behind Bayern (47 goals), the SGE has the second-best attack in the Bundesliga (31 goals).

Predicted Frankfurt line-up:
Trapp – Knauff – Ndicka – Jakic – Tuta – Ebimbe – Rode – Sow – Götze – Lindström – Kolo Muani

Mainz – Frankfurt Direct comparison / H2H-Balance

Head to head: 10 – 16 – 14

A total of 40 meetings between the two teams are on the books and with 14 wins, the SGE leads the direct comparison by a narrow margin. Most recently, the Adler remained unbeaten in four league games against FSV (two wins, two draws). Away in Mainz, however, only one of the last 14 league games could be won (seven draws, six defeats).

Mainz – Frankfurt tip

For a variety of reasons, our prediction for Mainz against Frankfurt clearly goes to the guests from the banking city. The Eagles are one of the best away teams in the Bundesliga and bring the momentum from seven wins in the last eight competitive matches. In contrast, FSV are the second-weakest home team in the Bundesliga and bring no momentum with them after three defeats in a row with a total of 2:10 goals.

While the Adler have won just one of their last 14 Bundesliga away games at the Nullfünfern. Looking at the current form curves of both teams, the chances are nevertheless favourable that it could now be that time again.
