The strong second round of the FSV Mainz 05 last season was confirmed by the zero five in the new season and are at the top of the table after four days of play. After seven minutes, Grifo headed just past on the other side and missed the home team’s early 1-0 lead. After that, however, the game flattened again and it took until the 27th minute before Andersson had the next shot for the FC. Seven minutes later Modeste beheaded the 1:0 for the goats (34th). Shortly thereafter Uth should have added, but the striker only hit the post (37th).
In the second round, the SC started again strong and missed the equaliser twice by Jeong (49th) and Höler (52nd). After an hour, the pace was out of the game. The cathedral towns had only a half chance through Kainz (61st). In the 74th minute, Austria was once again in the spotlight as he flew off the field in yellow-red. Despite shorthandedness, Cologne defended itself properly and did not allow much. In the final phase, however, the pressure on the FC defensive was increasing and then another player slipped in – 1:1 through an own goal by Czichos (89th). Especially bitter, because the Rhineland could have closed the sack three minutes earlier, but Duda forgave lightly (86th).
The Streich-Elf have won two league games in a row against Dortmund at home (2:1) and in Stuttgart (3: 2) after a mixed 0-0 victory over Arminia Bielefeld. After all, only the top teams from Wolfsburg, Leverkusen and Bavaria are better than the sports club. What is striking so far is that the two duels against big names such as BVB and VfB were won, but not scored three times against smaller teams such as Bielefeld and Cologne.
With the exception of Jonathan Schmid (Corona), Freiburg can travel to the Rhineland with all its men.
