Do the Foxes continue their march towards the Premier League?
On Tuesday, Leicester City will face Sheffield Wednesday in the second English division, the Championship. The roles could hardly be more clearly defined, as while the home side are marching towards the Premier League, the visitors must fear for their survival. For this reason, the bookmakers’ odds between Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday clearly favor a win for the home team
However, we should not immediately underestimate the underdogs, as the two teams drew 1-1 in the first half of the season. Danny Röhl’s team only scored the equalizer in the 93rd minute of the game and fully deserved a point. However, their form in recent weeks speaks against another surprise, as the visitors have only won one of their last seven competitive matches. Therefore, the odds clearly speak against an away win between Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday
One player in particular is in the spotlight ahead of this game and that is Patson Daka. The center forward had a very poor start to the season and played just 27 minutes at the beginning of December. Since then, however, the attacker has been in impressive form and has scored seven goals in his last nine competitive games. The Zambia international has also set up three more goals and is therefore on fire
Leicester – statistics & current form
Leicester City have collected 75 points from their first 31 games this season and are currently top of the English second division. The Foxes have only lost four games and are therefore hard to beat. In addition, Enzo Maresca’s side already have eleven points more than their closest rivals and are therefore more than clear favorites for promotion. In their current form, it would even be a surprise if the home side were not still at the top at the end of this season.
Enzo Maresca’s team have already played 15 home games in the Championship, losing just two of them. Leicester City have scored 31 goals (⌀ 2.07) and have only failed to score twice. This means that the home side found the back of the net in 87% of their matches. In addition, the hosts only conceded nine goals at home (⌀ 0.60). Based on their strong home record alone, a defeat against Sheffield Wednesday is rather unlikely.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall moved from Shepshed Warriors to Leicester City at the age of just eight and has worn the Foxes jersey ever since. However, the midfielder only made his big breakthrough this season. With ten goals and ten assists, the 25-year-old Englishman is his team’s top scorer and therefore also one of the key players in Enzo Maresca’s team. In fact, he has hardly had a game this season in which he has not made a positive impression
Offensively unstoppable
With 66 goals in 31 league games (⌀ 2.13), the home side have the best offense in the league. Enzo Maresca’s side have only failed to score three times and have found the back of the net in 90% of their matches. A goal from the favorites therefore seems almost set in stone. The hosts are also difficult to figure out due to the breadth of their squad, with Jamie Vardy, Patson Daka, Kelechi Iheanacho, Stephy Mavidi and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall providing enormous quality in attack.
In addition to the offense, Leicester City’s defense has also impressed so far. The home side have only conceded 24 goals in 31 games, making them the best defense in the league. For this reason, the Foxes have kept a clean sheet eleven times this season and are also one of the best teams in the Championship in this statistic. Nevertheless, the home side have conceded at least one goal in almost 65% of their games.
Predicted Leicester line-up:
Sheffield Wednesday – Statistics & current form
Sheffield Wednesday are having a disappointing season and are falling well short of their own expectations. After promotion to the Championship, Danny Röhl’s side have quickly reached their limits and are therefore one of the outsiders in the battle to stay up. After 31 games, the visitors have just 26 points to their name and are five points behind the drop zone. In the current situation, even a point would be a great success
A frightening away record
The Owls have picked up just seven points from 15 games away from home, putting them in penultimate place in the away table. This means that Danny Röhl’s team only picked up 27% of their total points away from home, lost 80% of their away games and are therefore much better away from home. In addition, the visitors have only scored seven goals in their away games and are therefore far too harmless. Winning a point at the King Power Stadium therefore seems almost impossible
Ike Ugbo joined Cardiff City on loan from Troyes in the summer and played in the Championship in the first half of the season. However, the loan deal was terminated during the winter break, as the desired success failed to materialize with just four goals in 25 games. Things could be different at Sheffield Wednesday, as the attacker was named Man of the Match in his fifth game for Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, scoring a brace in a 2-0 win over Birmingham City.
Offensively far too harmless
With 24 goals in 31 league games (⌀ 0.77), Danny Röhl’s team has been too harmless so far. In a league-wide comparison, the visitors are in last place and therefore have the weakest offense in the league. In addition, the visitors have already failed to score 15 times, meaning they have found the back of the net in just 52% of their games. Away from home, the rate is even worse at 47%. It is therefore rather unlikely that Sheffield will score against Leicester.
While the offense has been far too harmless this season, Sheffield’s defense has not been convincing either. Danny Röhl’s side have already conceded 50 goals, which puts them in 21st place in the league, so it is very surprising that the Owls have gone seven games without conceding a goal this season. However, this is unlikely to happen against the best offense in the league.
Predicted line-up for Sheffield Wednesday:
Leicester – Sheffield Wednesday head-to-head comparison / H2H result
Surprisingly, the direct comparison between the two teams is very even. Leicester have won 26 matches against Sheffield Wednesday, while 15 games have ended in a draw and the visitors have also won 26. The last time the two teams met was on matchday 18 of the current season, just under eight weeks ago. At that time, Wednesday were able to fight out a 1-1 draw and thus celebrate a success. However, we do not expect that to happen at the King Power Stadium, which is why our prediction between Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday is clearly in favor of the home team
Leicester – Sheffield Wednesday betting tip
We recommend a win for the home side between Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday with a handicap of -1.5. The odds reflect the balance of power very appropriately, because while the Foxes are the best team in the league, the promoted team from Sheffield will probably no longer play in the Championship next season. The hosts are superior in all respects and should therefore win this game by a clear margin
Alternatively, we recommend the odds on “both teams to score – no” between Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday. In our opinion, the odds are quite lucrative, as the home side have the best defense in the league. In addition, the visitors have failed to score in 15 of their 31 league games, making them one of the weakest attacking teams in England’s second-highest division
