Will the Geißböcke score for the first time against their fearful opponent?

Four times 1. FC Köln and 1. FC Union Berlin have faced each other in the Bundesliga so far. The Eisernen have won all four games, making them the only Bundesliga team against whom the Cathedral City side has a winning percentage of exactly 0%. The Effzeh, on the other hand, is the only Bundesliga team against whom the Köpenickers have a 100% win rate.

With a view to the previous record of both teams, it is accordingly surprising that the odds in the run-up to the encounter between Cologne and Union Berlin do not swing crystal-clearly in the direction of the capitals. In fact, however, the Billy Goats are listed as favourites.

A quite remarkable assessment, as the Müngersdorfer have recently managed to pick up just one point out of a possible nine from their last three league games, in which they conceded a total of nine goals. The Eisern, on the other hand, have recently picked up ten points out of a possible 15 in the Bundesliga.

Accordingly, the bet on the double chance X2.

for Cologne against Union Berlin is a good play.

Cologne – Statistics & current form

Although 1. FC Köln have already won three German championships and are the sixth largest sports club in Germany in terms of members, they have not yet won a league title. In recent years, however, the Geißböcke have mostly been nothing more than a lift team.

In the last 20 years alone, the Müngersdorfer have been relegated from the Bundesliga four times in 2004, 2006, 2012 and most recently in 2018, but have always been able to return to the top flight of German football in the year after next at the latest.

Only one point out of a possible nine from the last three league games

All the more relieved that the team did not drop down another level this summer and managed to stay in the league despite only eight wins from the 34 league games and 16th place in the final table via the relegation against Holstein Kiel.

Under Steffen Baumgart, the Effzeh got off to a good start in the new season, losing only one of the first seven league games. However, the Geißböcke then went down 5-0 at Hoffenheim and picked up just one more point from their last three league games, scoring 2:9 goals.

Unbeaten in eight league home games this season

The Geißböcke, who can be quite satisfied with their eleventh-place finish and four points ahead of the relegation play-off places, are correspondingly ticked off going into the eleventh matchday, when a big fearful opponent is a guest at the Rheinenergiestadion.

The Geißböcke are undefeated in eight home league games this season. However, they have only ever lost to the Eisernen in the Bundesliga. It is therefore all the more surprising that the billy goats are favourites going into the game.

Union Berlin – Statistics & current form

1. FC Union Berlin rose to the Bundesliga as one of those clubs that quickly attract sympathy with their down-to-earth nature, but usually quickly disappear back into the second division.

But instead of following exactly the pattern expected by many experts, the Eisernen are now firmly entrenched in the top flight of German football. This summer, in seventh place, they even went to Europe for the first time. The capital city team qualified for the Conference League.

Fully on target at national level

In the Conference League, the Berliners, who are strong at home, have to play at the Olympiastadion. Nevertheless, they put in a strong performance against Feyenoord Rotterdam on Thursday evening. In the end, however, the Köpenicker could not reward themselves, who are fourth in Group E with three points.

Things are much more solid at national level. In the DFB Pokal, the Eisern won their ticket to the last 16, and in the Bundesliga, they have only lost two games. Urs Fischer’s side have picked up ten points out of a possible 15 in their last five matches.

After ten matchdays again in the top third of the table

After ten matchdays, the capital city team is already back in the top third of the table and, as the current sixth-placed team, can hope that the European adventure will not remain a one-off, but that international football will also be played in Berlin in 2022/23.

For this to happen, the recent series should ideally be continued and the Cologne vs Union Berlin tip 2 should come true. This is supported by the fact that not only have all four previous Bundesliga games against the Geißböcke been won, but at least two goals have been scored in all four games.

Cologne – Union Berlin Direct comparison / H2H-balance

Head to head: 5 – 1 – 6

The two teams have faced each other a total of twelve times and the Ironmen lead the direct comparison with six wins. When reduced to the Bundesliga, the Köpenicker’s lead becomes even clearer, winning all four duels in the top flight of German football (100%).

Cologne – Union Berlin Tip

For Cologne against Union Berlin, the prediction not only has to take into account that the Eisern have now been unbeaten against Cologne for six games in a row and have recently celebrated five wins in a row. In addition, the current momentum also plays a major role. The Köpenickers have picked up ten of a possible 15 points from their last five games, while the Cathedral City side have conceded just one in nine recently.

While the next tough English week is in the bones of the capitals through the Conference League. However, with the international break coming up, the squad should have enough energy to give it their all again in Müngersdorf.
