Will the Wolves strike again in Kraichgau?
VfL Wolfsburg made an impressive return from the summer break, winning the first two league games of a Bundesliga season for the fifth time in the club’s history. Now, the Lower Saxons are looking to push their tally to nine points at one of their favorite opponents before heading into the international break. Basically, the betting on an away win for the Wolves in Hoffenheim vs. Wolfsburg is not under bad omens.
The TSG Hoffenheim lost already on the first matchday in their own stadium with 1:2 against the SC Freiburg, before it looked for a long time like another defeat on the second matchday. However, after trailing 0:2, the Sinsheim team struck back with three goals in the final quarter of an hour and won late at promoted Heidenheim. Nevertheless, our prediction for Hoffenheim against Wolfsburg goes for a point win for the visitors.
While TSG Hoffenheim has always scored in its last 13 Bundesliga games against VfL Wolfsburg without exception, and in any case scored more goals in the Beletage of German soccer only against Cologne (51) than against the Wolves (47). Despite this, however, the Lower Saxons took the full six points against the team from Kraichgau last season in two 2-1 victories. Plus: VfL has also not scored against any other Bundesliga team more often than against TSG (58 times).
Thus, there is a lot to be said for a high-scoring match in which the tendency is clearly for the guests to win the point. Very coherent is therefore the combined tip on the double chance X2 with over 1.5 goals.
Hoffenheim – statistics & current form
After another rather disappointing season, which ultimately ended in twelfth place in the final table, the former Champions League participants from Hoffenheim want to attack the top third of the table again for the new season.
To this end, the Baden-Württemberger adjusted again shortly before the transfer deadline and signed after Wout Weghorst now also Mergim Berisha from FC Augsburg. Both players are expected to play an active role in ensuring that the team from Kraichgau once again exudes more danger in the forward play.
Strong comeback on the second matchday
The Sinsheim side have already scored four goals in the first two matchdays, but they have also conceded four goals. Accordingly, the yield so far is capable of improvement, whereby Hoffenheim had to be glad after the 1:2 home defeat against SC Freiburg not to have slid into the false start.
In their visit to the Ostalb, the Kraichgau side trailed 0:2 against promoted Heidenheim until the 77th minute of the game, before three goals in the final quarter of an hour resulted in a 3:2 away win. TSG is currently the only Bundesliga team to have scored three goals in the final quarter of an hour.
Won only three of last nine league games
Besides that, a lot of things about the former Champions League contender read just average. Among the last nine league games, only three wins can be found (three draws, three defeats), which is why the betting odds for Hoffenheim against Wolfsburg are not overly favorable for a home win for Matarazzo’s eleven.
After all, against the wolves there were just last season two 1:2 defeats. At least, however, the Sinsheimers almost always showed themselves to be goal-threatening against the Lower Saxons. In the last 13 Bundesliga duels with VfL, TSG has always scored at least one goal of its own…
Predicted lineup of Hoffenheim:
Hoffenheim (Expected lineup) 3-4-1-2
Wolfsburg – statistics & current form
A lot has happened in the summer at VfL Wolfsburg, too, who last season narrowly missed out on the international competitions on the last matchday. However, instead of the well-known new arrivals, an old acquaintance has caused a sensation on the first two match days.
The 24-year-old Dane Jonas Wind has scored all four of Wolfsburg’s goals in the Bundesliga so far, becoming the first VfL player ever to score four goals in the first two Bundesliga matchdays of a season. He was thus largely responsible for the dream start.
The fifth six-point start in club history
Despite this, there was further movement in the attack shortly before the transfer deadline. Niedersachsen reportedly transferred around 15 million euros to Olympique Lyon to secure the services of Swedish striker Amin Sarr.
Niko Kovac’s squad would like to build on the six-point start that VfL Wolfsburg made for the fifth time in Bundesliga history. The last time six points were scored in the first two league games was in the 2021/22 season under Mark van Bommel.
A comeback win for the first time in the new year
When it comes to Hoffenheim against Wolfsburg, the betting is accordingly interesting that the Lower Saxons can now also follow up in Sinsheim, especially since they finally showed their long-lost comeback qualities again on matchday two.
For the first time ever in the calendar year 2023, the Wolves managed to win the away game in Cologne after trailing 0:1 (final score: 2:1). The aforementioned goal, which put the Geißböcke in the lead in the first place, was the only one conceded by the Green-Whites in the three competitive matches of the 2023/24 season.
Predicted Wolfsburg lineup:
VfL Wolfsburg (Expected lineup) 4-3-3
Hoffenheim – Wolfsburg Direct comparison / H2H balance
Head to head: 9 – 7 – 15
There have been a total of 31 meetings between the two teams so far and with 15 wins, VfL Wolfsburg has won almost exactly half of all duels with TSG Hoffenheim. The Lower Saxons took the full six points against the Sinsheim side in the 2022/23 season, winning 2-1 both away and at home.
Hoffenheim – Wolfsburg tip
Though the odds are slightly in favor of Hoffenheim against Wolfsburg, who have always scored in their last 13 Bundesliga matches against VfL. Already last season, however, TSG scored zero points against the Lower Saxons and also had to admit defeat in the last home match with 1:2. Moreover, the Wolves currently travel with the momentum of the six-point start and with an extremely in-form Jonas Wind, who was the first Wolfsburg player ever to score four goals on the first two matchdays.
Following on from Hoffenheim vs Wolfsburg, our prediction goes for the Green-Whites to win the point. Because, in addition, for the reasons explained, goals in Baden-Württemberg are very likely, we bet on the combined tip from the double chance X2 at over 1.5 goals.
