Will the in-form Mainz side end Berlin’s home streak?
Hertha BSC have recently recorded two important home wins in a row against Gladbach (4:1) and Augsburg (2:0). It is true that the other six of the last eight league games were all lost. Nevertheless, these six points are enough to keep the team out of the relegation zone. Now, however, one of the strongest teams in the league is coming to the Olympiastadion. Accordingly, the betting on Hertha against Mainz is that the Rheinhessen team will take the three points from the capital.
The Nullfünfer have won their last four league games in a row. Only Dortmund (18) have scored more points than Mainz (15) in their six league games in the second half of the season, and they are unbeaten in seven games against the Old Lady (four wins, three draws), having won 2-1 at the Olympiastadion in their last outing. Thus, our prediction for Hertha against Mainz also goes to the red and white this time around.
The “Big City Club” is certainly encouraged by the fact that they have recently recorded two home victories in a row. Overall, however, the home record of the capital does not read very frightening. Hertha BSC won just four games at home in the 2022/23 season – 14th place in the home table. On the other hand, the Nullfünfer are strong away from home, with only Union Berlin (six), Dortmund and Bayern (seven each) topping their five wins away from home.
Consequently, we are betting on a win for the away team in this duel. Those who are less risk-averse can either hedge this bet with a “Draw No Bet” or use a free bet to place their bet.
Hertha – Statistics & current form
Hertha BSC were initially able to shake off their image as a lift club in the 2010s and establish themselves permanently in the Bundesliga. However, the efforts to turn the capital club into a top club permanently represented in Europe must be declared a failure for the time being.
Despite high transfer spending at times, the daily routine in the German capital has always been a fight against relegation. Only last season, the Old Lady only managed to stay in the top flight of German football via relegation.
Only one point ahead of 18th place
After 23 completed match days, the Herthaner are still above the line.
The 20 points from 23 league games since the return to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2013 have only been undercut once in the 2020/21 season (only 18 points). Even last season, when they only made it to the relegation play-off, they had more points after 23 games.
Just how precarious the situation is is also shown by the fact that there is only one measly point between the Old Lady and 18th place in a tight table. So if the Rheinhessen side suffer their seventh defeat in their ninth league game in 2023, the “Big City Club” will be in danger of the next free fall.
Won last two home games in a row
A glimmer of hope has been Berlin’s recent performance at home, where they have celebrated two straight wins – as many as in the first ten home games of the 2022/23 season in total. However, there have not been three home wins in a row for the Old Lady in the Bundesliga since September 2018.
Consequently, it comes as no surprise that the betting odds are in favour of Hertha against Mainz, who, to make matters worse, have also been without another treble for seven meetings with the Rheinhessen side (three draws, four defeats).

Mainz – Statistics & current form
During the 2022/23 season, 1. FSV Mainz 05 had to endure some critical phases, when between matchdays twelve and 17 they had six consecutive league games without a win (two draws, four defeats).
Just in time for the second half of the season, however, the only Bundesliga team from Rhineland-Palatinate is back in excellent form. The Nullfünfer picked up 15 of a possible 18 points in the second half of the season. A yield that is only surpassed by Borussia Dortmund (18).
The second best team in the Bundesliga second-round table
Recently, Mainz even won four league games in a row for the first time in the Bo Svensson era.
Five wins in a row hasn’t happened for the Red and Whites in twelve years, when the team was still coached by Thomas Tuchel. A comparison that impressively underlines the recent high in form.
Consequently, the zero-fives may even cautiously set themselves higher goals these days. The gap to sixth place, which would certainly lead to an international competition, is currently just four points. The red and whites are already in seventh place, which could also be enough under certain circumstances.
The fourth most away wins in the Bundesliga
Bo Svensson’s men have been particularly unpleasant away from home. FSV have already won five of their eleven Bundesliga away games. Only Union Berlin (six), Dortmund and Bayern (seven each) have celebrated more victories away from home this season.
The Rhineland-Palatinate showpiece club also won three of its last five away games here (one draw, one defeat).

Hertha – Mainz Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
Head to head: 13 – 17 – 12
There have been a total of 42 meetings between the two teams so far and the record is relatively even. Most recently, however, the clash has been clearly in the hands of the Zero Five, who have not lost any of their last seven league games against the Old Lady since March 2019 (four wins, three draws).
Hertha – Mainz Tip
When it comes to Hertha against Mainz, our prediction goes to an away win for the Rheinhessen, who have been in captivating form in the second half of the season and have won five of their last six league games (one defeat). On the other hand, Hertha are still struggling and have won two home games in a row, but have lost all of their other six league games in 2023.
Because the Berliners are winless in seven league games against the Nullfünfer (three draws, four defeats), there is much to suggest that FSV can land their next away win at the Olympiastadion.
