Will the Sportclub remain winless again on the Lower Rhine?
Two times there were series in the Bundesliga, lasting 27 games, in which there was not a single away win between two teams. Those were Frankfurt and Gladbach on the one hand and Kaiserslautern and Bremen on the other. Now the Foals could join that circle once again when they host SC Freiburg at Borussia-Park on Sunday.
In the last 26 meetings between these two clubs, the visitors have not managed to win away from home once. Gladbach will of course be hoping for the same statistics this year. And it doesn’t look too bad that this series will last, which means that Borussia will at least not lose at home on Sunday.
In the Bundesliga table, the Borussians are currently in eleventh place, which is below expectations, but theoretically they could jump to one of the international places with a win, because the standings are very tight. Due to the home strength of the Foals, we tend to predict a home win in the Gladbach vs Freiburg match.
Freiburg, on the other hand, are currently slipping into a results crisis. In the table, however, the Sportclub is still in an outstanding fourth place. However, they are only four points away from twelfth place. It’s a tight race in the top flight.
Gladbach – Statistics & current form
It almost seems as if the plug is pulled on the Borussia Mönchengladbach team as soon as they start travelling. Adi Hütter’s team is showing two faces this season. At home, a lot is going very well, but away, there are always these setbacks that are almost inexplicable given the quality of the squad.
Fohlen very strong at home
For the weekend, however, the performance at Borussia-Park is more important and there Borussia is not only unbeaten in the Bundesliga, but also swept over FC Bayern like a hurricane in the DFB Pokal.
Last weekend, Gladbach had to travel to an away game again, even if the distance to Cologne is rather short. A quarter of an hour before the end Jonas Hofmann equalised the Geißböcke’ lead, but then the Foals wanted too much and played for victory. They were punished for this with three goals conceded and a bitter 1:4 defeat in the Rhineland derby.
The mood at Borussia-Park could have been better during the week, but at least there was positive news from the hospital. Christoph Kramer should be an option again. But Lars Stindl is threatening to drop out with a stomach bug. The injured Jordan Beyer, Mamadou Doucoure and Breel Embolo will definitely be absent.
Predicted line-up of Gladbach:
Sommer – Ginter, Elvedi, Bensebaini – Herrmann, Kone, Zakaria, Scally – Hofmann, Stindl – Plea – Coach: Hütter

Freiburg – Statistics & current form
The season started so well. For a long time, Freiburg were the last team to go unbeaten in the Bundesliga. That is now over, but the Sportclub still has the strongest defence in the top flight with only 13 goals conceded, but now together with FC Bayern. They will have to build on that on Sunday if they want to score at the Niederrhein.
Series of defeats at Sportclub
It’s just the scoring that hasn’t worked out in recent weeks. In the last three games, the Breisgauer have conceded three defeats. While one does not question the manner of Freiburg’s play, this series does not exactly speak in favour of making a prediction on a three-pointer for the visitors in the duel between Gladbach and Freiburg.
But you can’t really lose any more bitterly than last weekend. Sportclub were guests of VfL Bochum and dominated the game. Philipp Lienhart even gave his colours a 1:0 lead shortly after the break. It took its revenge that Streich’s eleven did not get the lid on the game and negligently missed many chances. In the end, VfL even won 2-1.
That was a game you should never, ever lose. Nevertheless, Christian Streich was more than satisfied with the attitude and play of his team. In terms of personnel, things continue to look very good. Only Jonathan Schmid is still recovering from his infection. All the other players are fit for action. Roland Sallai could make his comeback in the starting eleven,
Predicted line-up of Freiburg:
Flekken – Kübler, Lienhart, N. Schlotterbeck, Günter – Keitel, Höfler, Schade, Grifo – Höler, Sallai – Coach: Streich

Gladbach – Freiburg Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
The paths of Borussia Mönchengladbach and Sportclub Freiburg have crossed 42 times to date. In the direct comparison, the Foals are only just ahead with a 15:14 victory. 13 duels ended in a draw. In the Bundesliga, the Breisgauer have only won once in Gladbach, 26 years ago in April 1995.
Since then, the team from the Lower Rhine has been unbeaten at home in 17 games against the Sportclub. Borussia currently has no other club with such a record. The last meeting took place in April at Borussia-Park, Roland Sallai gave Freiburg an early lead before Marcus Thuram turned the game around in the second period with a brace in favour of the Foals.
Gladbach – Freiburg Tip
Borussia Mönchengladbach has problems away from home. However, they are still unbeaten at home this season. In the DFB Cup, there was also the exhilarating victory against FC Bayern. If you will, then the Foals are probably currently favoured against every opponent in the Bundesliga in their own stadium.
SC Freiburg have not won at the Niederrhein for 26 years and come to Gladbach with three defeats in a row in their luggage. We shouldn’t be talking about a crisis just yet, but if they suffer their fourth defeat on Sunday, then that’s probably it. In our opinion, you should probably bet on the Foals in the duel between Gladbach and Freiburg.
If Adi Hütter’s eleven manage to perform only about the same as in most home games, then there could even be a significant defeat for Freiburg. Once the Foals gallop at home, they are hard to stop and that is why we have decided to play the betting odds on a handicap win (-1.5) for the home side between Gladbach and Freiburg.
