Frankfurt continue to dream of the top flight

In the past three seasons, 55 points at the end of a season would not have been enough to secure one of the coveted Champions League places. In 2023/24, however, Eintracht Frankfurt could even punch their ticket for the reformed group stage of the top flight with fewer than 50 points.

If Dortmund win the CL final at Wembley on June 1, the sixth-placed team in the final Bundesliga table would also advance to the main draw of the most important club competition at European level. To secure this sixth place, however, the Hessians will have to show a completely different face at the weekend than they did last Sunday in their 5-1 defeat at home to Leverkusen.

Coach Dino Toppmöller’s team will visit Borussia Park in Mönchengladbach as part of the 33rd matchday in the Bundesliga. This will be the 100th time the two traditional clubs have faced each other in the German top flight. No other club in the country’s top flight has scored more points against SGE than the team from the Lower Rhine. However, the cards will be reshuffled on Saturday afternoon, which is why history plays a rather subordinate role in our Gladbach vs.

In general, there seems to be a lot of risk involved in placing a bet on the three-way market ahead of the Gladbach vs Frankfurt clash, as both teams have been in poor form recently. The Foals in particular seem to have forgotten how to win after the winter break.

Gladbach – Statistics & current form

Two matchdays before the end of the season, Borussia Mönchengladbach have still not wrapped up relegation. They are currently four points clear of the relegation places. However, the foals benefit from a good goal difference compared to their direct rivals (-7), meaning that a lot would have to go wrong in the last two matchdays for coach Gerardo Seoane’s team to actually slip down to 16th place. However, should a bet on a three-pointer for the hosts between Gladbach and Frankfurt come true on Saturday, they would have secured their place in the league under their own steam.

However, the likelihood of such a home win is very limited, as the team from the Lower Rhine has fallen far short of its own expectations so far, particularly in the second half of the season. Borussia have only won two of the 15 Bundesliga matches played so far in the second half of the season. Seven draws and six defeats round off a sobering record. Only Darmstadt, who have already been relegated, have scored fewer points in the second half of the season than the former German champions, who only recorded fewer points in the relegation years of 1998/99 and 2006/07

Gladbach’s record in recent weeks reads like that of a relegated team

Against this backdrop, last weekend’s 2:2 draw in Bremen was almost a respectable result. Nevertheless, Seoane’s charges remained without a win for the fourth consecutive BL match. Looking back over the past nine matches in the top flight of German soccer, they have only managed one single three-pointer. The last win in front of their own fans was also over two months ago. Meanwhile, only two meagre points have been scored in the last four matches in front of a home crowd. Given Gladbach’s anything but good form and the lousy numbers, we would definitely refrain from predicting a home win between Gladbach and Frankfurt.

Robin Hack’s accuracy does nothing to change that. The 25-year-old has already scored nine goals this season. The new signing from Bielefeld scored all nine goals in the 2024 calendar year. After the winter break, only Harry Kane and Lois Openda have scored more often in the Bundesliga than the young family man, who also scored another brace in the aforementioned 2-2 draw on the Weser the previous week. Odds of well over 3.00 are being offered at Happybet for another goal from Robin Hack ahead of Gladbach’s clash against Frankfurt.

Predicted Gladbach line-up:

Frankfurt – Statistics & current form

It is quite paradoxical that Eintracht Frankfurt – according to the perception of many – are not playing a particularly good 2023/24 season and yet are on the verge of qualifying for Europe. Should Leverkusen win the cup final against Kaiserslautern, sixth place in the final standings would mean participation in the Europa League group stage. Moreover, if BVB unexpectedly lift the trophy at Wembley on June 1, the Hessians could even secure a ticket to the top flight. First, however, this desired sixth place must be secured.

With a four-point lead and only two games left to play, this definitely seems feasible. However, with a tough home game against RB Leipzig on the final matchday, coach Dino Toppmöller’s men would be well advised to make everything clear this Saturday at Borussia Park. That would require a win on the Lower Rhine, which they have at least managed to do in their last two visits to the Bundesliga side

Frankfurt’s hope has a name: Hugo Ekitiké

However, the current situation is causing many SGE fans to worry. Three of the last four Bundesliga games have been lost. The 1:5 home defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, mentioned in the introduction, was the sad low point. Many spectators left Deutsche Bank Park early and punished their own team for the negative performance. Away from home, things have also not gone according to plan for the Eagles recently. They have suffered three consecutive defeats away from home, although their opponents – FC Bayern, VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund – have been as challenging as possible.

Nevertheless, the team in ninth place in the table for the second half of the season looks more controlled and stable than the Foals. The Hessians have made a better impression throughout the season, particularly in defense. Their individual quality should also swing the pendulum in favor of the players from the Main metropolis. Added to this is Hugo Ekitiké, one of the Bundesliga’s most in-form attackers, who has recently scored at least once in three consecutive matches after starting his Eintracht career with nine goalless league games.

In our opinion, it therefore makes sense to take a closer look at the odds on Ekitiké scoring ahead of the Gladbach v Frankfurt match

Predicted Frankfurt line-up:

Gladbach – Frankfurt head-to-head comparison / H2H result

In the 99 previous meetings in Germany’s top soccer league, Eintracht Frankfurt have won 38 times. Gladbach have won 33, while 29 encounters have ended in draws. The Hessians have not lost to the Foals in five head-to-head meetings (3-2-0). Eintracht have also won their two most recent away matches at Borussia Park. The match in the first half of the season was also won by Frankfurt, who turned around a 0:1 deficit with two goals in stoppage time from Buta (92′) and Robin Koch (97′) to win 2:1 at home

Gladbach – Frankfurt betting tip

Almost every match on the 33rd Bundesliga matchday still has something at stake. Borussia Park in Mönchengladbach is also home to two teams who need points to achieve their short-term goal for the season. The Foals want to banish the spectre of relegation once and for all, while the Eagles’ goal is to secure sixth place in the final standings.

We would give the visitors from the Main the better chances on Saturday afternoon. Although the form of both teams is anything but good, we believe that Eintracht have more quality, especially in defense. The team from the Lower Rhine also won only two of their 15 second-round games and collected the second-fewest points of all first division teams in the second half of the season. One win from their last nine games underlines their poor form, which is partly responsible for the fact that very high odds are being offered on a home win between Gladbach and Frankfurt.

Our preferred approach is to bet on Toppmöller’s team winning a point and to combine this with over odds. Ultimately, in the 100th Bundesliga match between Gladbach and Frankfurt, we get 1.88 at the top for the tip on the X2 & Over 1.5, which we play at Betano with six units as a stake.
