Both looking to respond to opening defeat

The second matchday is on the agenda in Spain’s La Liga. Girona will take on Getafe and both teams have had a less than stellar start to the season

Before the match between Girona and Getafe, the betting odds show the hosts as favourites. However, this does not turn out to be particularly high, as both teams are anything but far apart in terms of individual quality.

Girona – Statistics & current form

Girona FC are a newcomer to the Spanish league, promoted in the summer. However, coach Michel’s team is no ordinary promoted team, but belongs to the City Football Group, which also includes clubs like Manchester City or New York City. This means that some of Manchester City’s players can be loaned out, and Girona serves more or less as a training club.

Girona lost their first match at Valencia FC 0:1, but the visitors did well, had one or two chances and only lost by a narrow margin. A draw would have been possible. Accordingly, the start was seen as relatively positive. Many new players have to be integrated, eight new players were brought to Girona in the summer, five of them on loan. Things still have to find their way.

With only two defeats from the last seven games, Girona have a good record, but it is also true that many of these players fell into the phase when the club was still fighting for promotion in La Liga 2. The next few weeks will test their ability in the top flight, but the programme is doable with Getafe, Vigo, RCD Mallorca and Real Valladolid.

Girona are regarded as a strong team at home

Looking back at the promotion season, Girona certainly played an attacking style in La Liga 2, especially in home games. The team scored 36 of its 57 goals in the season in front of a home crowd, and conceded far fewer here as well. However, matches in the Copa del Rey against teams from the first division showed that it is seamlessly possible to switch from an attacking to a more compact alignment.

Girona played 13 games in the league last season without conceding a goal. This value was very good, even in the promotion play-offs there were only two goals conceded in four games. The hosts were also strong at home last season, averaging two points per game, while only 1.24 points were earned away from home. There were also big differences defensively, with Girona conceding ten fewer goals at home.

The adjustment to the new league is now to take place gradually. The team has quality, but the squad is quite thin. Nevertheless: In the second game of the season, the aim is to put in another good performance and, above all, to concede few goals. Therefore, before the match Girona vs. Getafe, our prediction is that not both teams will score.

Getafe – Statistics & current form

Getafe FC have consistently managed to put together good seasons with comparatively modest means in recent years. The stadium is small, the squad is small, the expectations around the club are not too high either. And the team is happy in this role. Coach Quique Sanchez Flores made it clear early on this season that the only goal was to stay in the league.

The start was sobering. Offensively, there were some good moments and alert moments, but defensively, there was not much to be gained when Atletico pushed the tempo. And the Colchoneros did that frequently, which is why it ended up 3-0. So the start went wrong, and now they have to make amends.

However, Getafe have failed to win any of their last six games this season, with only two victories in ten matches. So there has to be an improvement, their own game has to improve. Balance is a factor, offensively it needs relief.

Getafe: Will it be another bad season away from home?

So the team lacks confidence, that can definitely be said. On top of that, this team simply scores incredibly few goals. 33 in 38 games last season. Hardly any team was worse in La Liga. They managed to stay in the league due to two factors. Getafe are very unpleasant to play against at home and won seven of their eight games there this season.

Away, however, there was only one victory in 19 attempts. Ten defeats speak a clear language here, and the team could only score twelve goals. The second factor that kept them in the top flight was their defence. With 41 goals conceded in 38 games, Getafe had a very respectable record here.

It could be a game in which nuances would decide. Getafe, however, did not start the season well and has problems away from home.
