Do the Rheinhessen side score at their favourite opponent?

Although SC Freiburg have only picked up four points out of a possible nine from their last three home games in the Bundesliga. Overall, however, things could hardly have gone better for the Black Forest side, who have lost only one of their first seven league games and occupy third place in the table. Christian Streich’s side currently have two points more on their account than FC Bayern

The Nullfünfer, meanwhile, occupy a satisfactory eighth place in the table with eleven points out of a possible 21. Things have gone particularly well away from home for the Rheinhessen side, who are in second place in the away table with nine points out of a possible twelve. Nevertheless, in the run-up to the clash between Freiburg and Mainz, the odds are swinging in the direction of the hosts.

It is striking that both teams were very solid defensively. The Black Forest side have not conceded a goal in five of their seven league games, but have lacked offensive punch in two goalless draws in a row. Mainz, on the other hand, have the fourth weakest attack with only seven goals in the season, but conceded a maximum of one goal in five of their seven games.

Accordingly, in this south-west German duel between Freiburg and Mainz, the betting on less than 2.5 goals is high. Should the match even end 0-0 again, the Sport-Club would set a Bundesliga record with their third goalless draw in a row.

Freiburg – Statistics & current form

SC Freiburg were already in the fight for the Champions League for a long time in the 2021/22 season. In the end, the Black Forest side, who also reached the DFB Pokal final for the first time, finished in sixth place and qualified for the Europa League.

In the new season, the club from the south of Baden-Württemberg will pick up exactly where they left off last season. In the league, the men from Breisgau went into the international break in third place with 14 out of a possible 21 points. In the Europa League, Sport-Club lead Group G with two wins and 5:1 goals.

Have played to nil five times in league action

Christian Streich’s players can now go into matchday eight with a correspondingly high level of confidence, especially as the defence in particular has shone on several occasions.

Freiburg have not conceded a goal in five of their seven league games so far. That is the best score in the league.

Recently, however, the game was stuck in front twice. Due to two goalless draws in a row, further victories have failed to materialise for the time being. This also favours our bet on less than 2.5 goals in the match between Freiburg and Mainz.

Only four points out of a possible nine in their own stadium

There are, meanwhile, only two aspects that are problematic. On the one hand, the Sport-Club’s home record is not yet too good. With only four points out of a possible nine at home, the club not only ranks eighth in the home table, but also has the second-weakest home attack in the league with only two home goals scored.

And on the other hand, things have not gone well against 1. FSV Mainz 05 recently. In the last four league games against the Nullfünfer, the club from Breisgau took just two points out of a possible twelve and remained winless in two consecutive home games.

Mainz – Statistics & current form

1. FSV Mainz 05 have been part of the Bundesliga continuously since 2009, but have been stuck in a relegation battle on and off since then. In 2020/21, the Rheinhessen side played a similarly desolate first half of the season as Schalke 04, who were later relegated, but then Bo Svensson took over on 4 January 2021, heralding a high-flying season that has continued to this day.

In the course of a spectacular race to catch up, the Nullfünfer ended the season in twelfth place, before they kept their eyes on Europe throughout the season. In the end, they finished in a respectable eighth place in the final table of 2021/22.

Won only one of the last four league games

Now Mainz are back in eighth place, with the eleven points from a possible 21 from their first seven league games equalling the Red and Whites’ best performance in six years. After a brilliant start, however, FSV won only one of the last four games.

However, apart from the two heavy defeats against Leverkusen (0:3) and Hoffenheim (1:4), the Rheinhessen defence stood up well. In the five other league games, they conceded no more than one goal. However, the offensive has to improve, scoring only seven goals in seven league games.

The second best away team in the Bundesliga

Nevertheless, the Nullfünfer are now also expecting something at Freiburg’s Europa Park Stadium. After all, FSV, who have won three of their four away games so far, are the second best away team in the Bundesliga.

In view of the fact that five of the last ten guest games in Breisgau also resulted in an away win (two draws, three defeats), the clear underdog role of the Svensson eleven is a little surprising.

Freiburg – Mainz Direct comparison / H2H balance

Head to head: 14 – 13 – 17

There have been a total of 44 meetings between the two teams so far and Mainz lead the direct comparison with 17 victories. FSV have also remained unbeaten in four consecutive league games against Freiburg (two wins, two draws).

Freiburg – Mainz Tip

The forecast for Freiburg against Mainz tends to go in the direction of the Black Forest side. However, it should not be forgotten that the Baden-Württemberger have lost more at home than away, while the Nullfünfer have won all three Bundesliga matches this season away from home. Predicting who will score in this south-west German clash is correspondingly complicated.

The much greater value comes from betting that the two teams will not score too many goals. The Black Forest side have already kept a clean sheet five times in seven games and have played 0-0 twice recently, while the Nullfünfer have also been defensively sound for the most part, with offensive values that could be improved.

We are therefore betting on under 2.5 goals, for which betting odds of 2.00 are available on Freiburg vs Mainz.
