Fürth on the trail of Tasmania
After the DFB-Pokal during the week, things continue to go from strength to strength. The tenth matchday in the Bundesliga is on the agenda. On Saturday, Sportclub Freiburg will welcome Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth to the brand new Europa-Park Stadium. In the new arena, too, the Breisgauers want to continue their great series of the last few weeks and already almost months.
Christian Streich’s team has made an outstanding start to the season and is ranked third behind Bayern and Dortmund. The gap to the leaders is only three points. At least that’s all they should be this Saturday, because Sportclub are the clear favourites at home against the promoted team from Franconia.
The Fürth team has just one point on its account. With only one point, they are of course last, and already down. The cloverleaf is following in the footsteps of Tasmania Berlin, historically the worst Bundesliga team. Ahead of the clash between Freiburg and Fürth, the forecast cannot be for an away win.
Anything other than a home win would be a big surprise and that’s why we’re leaning towards a tip between Freiburg and Fürth that has anything to do with a home win.
Freiburg – Statistics & current form
SC Freiburg are coming up big this season. If we include the two cup games, Christian Streich’s team is unbeaten in eleven competitive games this season. In the top flight, the Breisgauers are the only team that has not yet suffered a defeat. Self-confidence rises with success, of course, and that’s why you can have a lot of confidence in the Sportclub at the moment.
Megal run of the Breisgauer
One of their strong points is their great defence. With only six goals conceded, Freiburg have the most stable defence in the top flight. In addition, they are undefeated in their own arena, first in the Dreisamstadion and now in the Europa-Park Stadion for eight games. We maintain that the odds on a home win between Freiburg and Fürth are highly interesting.
During the week, however, Streich’s eleven wobbled in the DFB Cup. Freiburg played at third division side Osnabrück and after a goal from Vincenzo Grifo, it looked like a narrow victory for a long time. In injury time, VfL equalised, went in front in extra time and only an extremely late goal by Keven Schlotterbeck secured the penalty shoot-out, in which Freiburg prevailed thanks to their better nerves.
In the cup, however, the only thing that counts is getting through, no matter how. Even at the round of 16, no one asks how close it was at Bremer Brücke. After the cup match, the use of the injured Philipp Lienhart and Nicolas Höfler is questionable. Janik Haberer and Keven Schlotterbeck should be the alternatives. Jonathan Schmid, Nils Petersen, Roland Sallai, Yannik Keitel and Kimberley Ezekwem will definitely not be in the match.
Predicted line-up of Freiburg:

Fürth – Statistics & current form
Naturally, there was great joy among the Fürthers when they had achieved the longed-for promotion. This time they didn’t want to stay in the elevator and go back down again, but already after nine matchdays it seems as if the cloverleaf has no chance in the relegation fight of the Bundesliga. Coach Stefan Leitl, however, is not even remotely questioned.
Franconia’s losing streak
And yet, including the first round in the cup, Fürth have not yet won this season. They only have one draw to their name. They have lost seven games in a row and have the weakest defence in the top flight. It is therefore not too far-fetched to predict that the home side will score a few goals in the clash between Freiburg and Fürth.
During the week, the cloverleaf had a game off and was able to prepare for the Freiburg game and deal with the 1:4 defeat in Leipzig. Fürth played a great first half at the Red Bull Arena and led 1:0 after Branimir Hrgota’s penalty. After the change, however, all the dams broke and the Fürth team was well served with the 1:4 result.
So Stefan Leitl’s team remains without an away point this season. Never before has the Spielvereinigung had a longer run of defeats in the first or second division. In terms of personnel, it looks like the match is still too early for Havard Nielsen. Paul Seguin, however, will return to the team after serving his yellow ban. The injured Gideon Jung, Robin Kehr and Jessic Ngankam will be missing.
Projected line-up of Fürth:
Funk – Meyerhöfer – Bauer, Viergever, Willems – Seguin, Griesbeck, Leweling, Dudziak – Hrgota, Itten – Coach: Leitl
Last matches played by Fürth:
1st Bundesliga
10/23 2021 – RB Leipzig 4 – 1 Greuther Fürth
10/16 2021 – Greuther Fürth 0 – 1 Vfl Bochum
10/01 2021 – 1. FC Köln 3 – 1 Greuther Fürth
09/24 2021 – Greuther Fürth 1 – 3 Bayern Munich
09/17 2021 – Hertha Berlin 2 – 1 Greuther Fürth
Freiburg – Fürth Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
The paths of SC Freiburg and SpVgg Greuther Fürth have crossed a total of 26 times to date. In a direct comparison, the two teams are perhaps a little closer together than one might have expected, as the Breisgauer lead just 9:6 after victories. With eleven draws, most of the duels between these two opponents have ended in a division of points.
The last time the two teams faced each other in the second Bundesliga was during a brief Freiburg interlude in the 2015/16 season. The Sportclub won both encounters and both times many goals were scored. In Freiburg, there was first a clear 5:2 home victory. The return match at the Ronhof was won 3:2 by the Sportclub.
Freiburg – Fürth Tip
Freiburg are on a terrific high and are currently the first chaser of the two top clubs Bayern and Dortmund. However, it is still far too early to talk about Europe or even the Champions League. With a win on Saturday, however, the Sportclub will remain in the upper echelons of the standings.
Freiburg are still unbeaten this season, while Fürth have yet to record a victory. Christian Streich’s team has the best defence in the top flight, while the Franconians have the weakest defence. Sportclub are unbeaten at home for eight games, while Spielvereinigung have lost seven times recently. There is no doubt that between Freiburg and Fürth the tip has to go in the direction of the home side.
The only question should be which bet promises the best value. We can imagine that HT/FT on Freiburg could be tight. After all, the Franconians led at the break in Leipzig last week. A win with several goals difference seems to be the safer option. Therefore, we play the betting odds on a handicap win (-1.5) for the Streich eleven between Freiburg and Fürth.
