Will the Bavarians give the leaders a leg up?
There will be one or two stumbling blocks for Bayern on the way to the next championship, but because the competition also stumbles time and again, the Munich team should become German champions for the first time under Julian Nagelsmann. On Saturday, however, SC Freiburg will try to give the record champions a leg up at the Europa Park Stadium.
The Breisgau side are still on course for the Champions League. Christian Streich’s team are currently in fifth place, but are level on points with fourth-placed RB Leipzig. The Sportclub has a cushion of five points up to seventh place, which would mean missing out on international competition. In addition, there is still the chance to qualify for the Europa League via the DFB Cup.
For Bayern, there is always only one goal in the Bundesliga, namely winning the Salad Bowl. Julian Nagelsmann’s team currently has a six-point and 24-goal lead over Borussia Dortmund. That can still be squandered, but this scenario is not yet conceivable. Before the kick-off between Freiburg and Bayern, we predict that the championship will once again go to Munich this year.
Originally, one would have to assume that not many goals will be scored in this duel, as Bayern have the best defence in the Bundesliga with 28 goals conceded. Freiburg have conceded only one more goal and are in second place in this ranking.
Freiburg – Statistics & current form
Freiburg is playing outstanding football this season. You can get proof of that via the table, but the international match during the week between Holland and Germany also gives you an idea. With Mark Flekken, Nico Schlotterbeck and Christian Günter, a total of three players stood on the pitch in Breisgau in this duel of two footballing greats.
Unbeaten in six Bundesliga games
Currently, the Sportclub is unbeaten for six games in the Bundesliga. No other team in the top flight currently has a longer streak. 45 points after 27 matchdays is the best tally in the Bundesliga history. Therefore, ahead of the clash between Freiburg and Bayern, we continue to look at the odds for an international qualification of the Breisgauer.
Before the internationals, however, Freiburg struggled mightily at bottom side Fürth. It has to be said, however, that the cloverleaf has stabilised considerably in the second half of the season and is no longer the points supplier it was in the first half. Nevertheless, Christian Streich and his players had expected more than just a point from the 0-0 draw at the Ronhof.
With Yannik Keitel and Kevin Schade, Christian Streich will have to do without at least two players on Saturday. Otherwise, however, all players should be fit, so that the Breisgau coach should have various tactical and personnel options. Edin Demirovic or Jonathan Schmid could also be in the starting eleven. As far as the line-up is concerned, it will mainly depend on whether Sportclub starts with a three-man or a four-man defence.
Predicted line-up of Freiburg:
Flekken – Kübler, Lienhart, N. Schlotterbeck, Günter – Eggestein, Höfler – Sallai, Jeong, Grifo – Höler – Coach: Streich

Bayern – Statistics & current form
It’s a little too easy to reduce FC Bayern to just Robert Lewandowski, but the attacker has cracked the 30-goal mark in the Bundesliga for the fifth time this season. Only Gerd Müller managed that before him. The Pole has scored 17 of his 31 goals away from home. The captain of the Polish national team has never scored 18 goals away from home in a single match.
Munich goal factory
In total, Munich have already scored 81 goals this season. After 27 games, no team in the top flight has ever scored that many goals. Of course, we can assume strong defences on Saturday, but we still give a prediction for an away win and at least one Lewandowski goal between Freiburg and Bayern.
Before the internationals, Bayern were fully convincing in their home match against Union Berlin. After 90 one-sided minutes, it was 4:0 for the Munich side. Kingsley Coman and Tanguy Nianzou initially provided a 2:0 lead. Robert Lewandowski added two more goals. It will be interesting to see whether the record champions will be similarly hungry for goals on Saturday.
Niklas Süle is the only Bayern player who will definitely be absent in Freiburg after tearing his muscle fibre. Alphonso Davies could possibly rejoin the squad after recovering from heart muscle inflammation. It remains to be seen whether Julian Nagelsmann will spare one or two players, as the first leg of the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League against Villarreal is scheduled for next week.
Predicted Bayern line-up:
Neuer – Pavard, Upamecano, Hernandez – Kimmich, Musiala – Gnabry, Müller, Sane, Coman – Lewandowski – Coach: Nagelsmann

Freiburg – Bayern Direct comparison / H2H balance
No team in the Bundesliga likes to look at their direct comparison against FC Bayern. Of course, that also applies to SC Freiburg. The Breisgauers have measured strength against the record champions a total of 44 times. After victories, the score is 31:4 in favour of the Munich side. Nine other duels ended in a division of points.
The Sportclub won the first three Bundesliga home games against Bayern. Since then, the only other win for Freiburg in 18 other home games was in May 2015. The first leg last November at the Allianz Arena, however, was a tight affair. Bayern took a 2-0 lead after goals from Leon Goretzka and Robert Lewandowski. Jannik Haberer only managed to score the late equaliser.
Freiburg – Bayern Tip
Freiburg are unbeaten in six games and will be looking to give FC Bayern a leg up on Saturday. After all, the Breisgauer have the second best defence in the league. The Munich team, however, is not only the best defence, but also by far the best attack in the Europa Park Stadium.
We also think that Robert Lewandowski will add at least one more goal to his 31 so far. Spurred on by the successful World Cup qualification with Poland, the superstar can now fully concentrate on the Bundesliga again. That’s why we reckon that you could be successful in the clash between Freiburg and Bayern with an over-goals bet.
Freiburg will do their best to fight back in a full stadium, however, and we think it is conceivable that Christian Streich’s team will keep the game open for a long time. That is why we remain rather cautious in our betting for this match. In the match between Freiburg and Bayern, we only offer the odds on a simple Bayern win
