Everyday after European Cup
Bundesliga Sunday is reserved for teams that played in the Europa League or Conference League on Thursday. On this matchday, the fixture list features a clash between two European Cup contenders. Eintracht Frankfurt will meet Union Berlin. The main factor here will be how both teams have coped with the English week.
Internationally, one can speak of a reasonably successful week. Now it’s back to the daily grind. In the Bundesliga table, Eintracht are in eleventh place with 15 points, still somewhat below expectations. It’s time for an upswing to make up some places in the Advent season.
The Eisern are clearly in a better position. Fifth place is a sensational snapshot. 20 points after twelve games is a great haul. In the capital, one can be more than satisfied with the current season. However, it’s hard to tell from the standings which direction the forecast between Frankfurt and Union Berlin will take.
In any case, it will be an intense game, because after Arminia Bielefeld, Eintracht and Union are the teams with the most running in the league. In addition, the Hessians are leading the most duels.
Frankfurt – Statistics & current form
Actually, Eintracht are used to dancing on two or three weddings at the same time in recent years. This season, however, the Hessians seem to have their problems with the load. Perhaps it’s also because there has been a major upheaval and they can’t really be satisfied at the moment.
Waiting for the home win
Although Frankfurt have won twice in a row in the Bundesliga for the first time in over half a year, not much works at home. There hasn’t been a single win in the five home games in the top flight. This could mean that we can disregard the odds on a home win in the duel between Frankfurt and Union Berlin.
On Thursday, the Glasner eleven wanted to wrap up the group win in the Europa League at home against Antwerp. However, with a 2:2 draw, this plan did not succeed. Nevertheless, the Hessians are still top of the table and at least secure a place in the play-offs. After goals from Kamada and Paciencia, the Hessians have everything in their own hands in the last group game at Fenerbahce Istanbul.
Martin Hinteregger, who has been ailing lately, is likely to rotate into the starting eleven on Sunday. Further changes will largely depend on how Eintracht got through the match against Antwerp. Load management is not out of the question. Christopher Lenz is currently the only player who is out due to injury.
Predicted Frankfurt line-up:
Trapp – Tuta, Hinteregger, Ndicka – Chandler, Jakic, Sow, Kostic – Lindström, Kamada – Borre – Coach: Glasner

Union Berlin – Statistics & current form
When Union Berlin made the leap into the Bundesliga, one could hardly have assumed that the Eisernen would make such a splash in the top flight. In two and a half years, the Köpenickers never once really worried about getting into the relegation maelstrom. This season, too, and with a triple burden, things are going almost sensationally.
Union on the up
The Köpenickers went through a small phase of weakness a good four weeks ago. But after a draw and two wins from the last three games, they quickly got their act together again. We think it is conceivable to predict a win for the visitors in the match between Frankfurt and Union Berlin.
In the Conference League, however, the Eisernen still have room to improve. After all, they have it in their own hands on the last matchday to move into the next round. After a 1-0 win at Maccabi Haifa last Thursday – scored by Julian Ryerson – a win at home against Czech champions Slavia Prague will be enough to advance.
But before that, they need to score in Frankfurt, at best three times. Christopher Trimmel, who was suspended in the Conference League, will play again in this mission. Sheraldo Becker would be an option to replace Max Kruse or Taiwo Awoniyi. The only player certain to be missing on Sunday in Frankfurt will be Kevin Behrens, who continues to recover from the effects of an infection.
Projected line-up of Union Berlin:
Luthe – Friedrich, Knoche, Baumgartl – Khedira – Trimmel, Gießelmann, Haraguchi, Prömel – Awoniyi, Kruse – Coach: Fischer

Frankfurt – Union Berlin Direct comparison / H2H-Balance
Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Berlin have already met in eleven matches in the DFB Cup, in the second division and more recently in the Bundesliga. In the direct comparison, the Hessians are pretty clearly ahead. After victories, the score is 6:1 for Eintracht. Four duels ended in a draw. The only victory, however, came in the Main metropolis.
Last season, more goals were scored in the two direct duels than in any other match in the Bundesliga. The first leg at the Alte Försterei ended in a 3:3 draw. Eintracht won the return match in Frankfurt 5:2 after a spectacular game, but after the strain of the European Cup, we don’t expect so many goals on Sunday.
Frankfurt – Union Berlin Tip
Both teams will probably make some personnel changes, because after all they were still competing in the European Cup on Thursday. The Berliners even had to play in Israel and still have the travel stress in their bones. That’s why we think that both teams will play a little bit cautiously and with less energy.
Therefore, we assume that you would do well to bet on lower goals between Frankfurt and Union Berlin. However, we think it is possible that both teams will score at least once. As far as the outcome of the match is concerned, we think it is very tricky to find the right bets.
Eintracht have yet to win at home this season, but have only lost one of their eleven direct encounters with the Ironmen. Therefore, there is not much to suggest that Glasner’s team will win on Sunday, but there is also not much to suggest that the visitors will win. That’s why we’ve decided to play the betting odds on a draw between Frankfurt and Union Berlin.
