Will Hessen remain a European powerhouse?

It is well known that Eintracht Frankfurt knows how to play in the Europa League. The Hessians have already eliminated some tough opponents in this competition, which is primarily due to their home strength. The SGE has not lost in eleven Europa League home games (six wins, five draws), which is why the tip for Frankfurt against Tottenham is that the Bundesliga club will advance to the semifinals.

The Spurs, on the other hand, have only reached the next round once in ten cases where they failed to win the first leg of a European knockout tie at home. The prediction for Frankfurt against Tottenham is therefore logical, especially as the visitors from London have only kept a clean sheet once in their last 19 Europa League away games and are very susceptible to conceding goals.

Admittedly, the Spurs also score a lot of goals. In the first leg, a strong performance by Kaua Santos and the woodwork meant that the Lilywhites were limited to a single goal, and they now face one of the most feared home attacks in the competition. In 27 Europa League home games, SGE have scored 55 goals – an average of more than two goals per game in front of their home crowd.

Frankfurt – Statistics & current form

Eintracht Frankfurt go into the quarter-final second leg on the back of a remarkable run: the Hessians are unbeaten in eleven home games in the UEFA Europa League (six wins, five draws) and have won their last four home games in a row. Eintracht have also been consistent in knockout rounds: since losing to FC Basel in the round of 16 second leg in the 2019/20 season, they have remained unbeaten in ten knockout games in the Europa League (six wins, four draws).

There have been five previous encounters between the two sides in international competition. Although the team from the Main metropolis has won only one of those games, they remain unbeaten at home against the Spurs (one win, one draw). In fact, the Eagles have lost only one of their last eight home games against English teams (three wins, four draws), with Arsenal the only team to win 3-0 in September 2019. Accordingly, it is interesting to bet on Frankfurt to advance against Tottenham, which is priced at 1.71 in the ODDSET app.

Frankfurt are very accurate at home

One of the players to watch is Hugo Ekitiké, who not only scored a spectacular goal from distance in the first leg, but has also been directly involved in seven goals in the current Europa League season (four goals, three assists). Only Luka Jovic (eleven) and Sébastien Haller (eight) scored more points for Eintracht in 2018/19. The sometimes moody diva from the Main is now aiming for its third semi-final appearance after 2018/19 and the title year 2021/22.

Their attacking strength at home is impressive: Eintracht have scored more than two goals per game on average in their 27 home games in the Europa League (55 goals in total). This attacking drive could be decisive in making the difference again against Spurs, who have been so weak away from home recently, before facing a thoroughly beatable opponent in Bodö/Glimt in the semi-finals.

Tottenham – Statistics & current form

Tottenham Hotspur failed to gain an advantage in the first leg with a 1-1 draw, confirming the negative trend of recent months. Basically, it is now a familiar and difficult scenario for the Londoners: in their European Cup history, they have failed in nine out of ten cases when they did not win the first leg at home. The only exception remains the legendary 2018/19 semi-final against Ajax, which they managed to turn around after trailing 0-2 at half-time in the second leg thanks to the away goals rule (0-1, 3-2).

However, their away record is worrying: the Lilywhites have lost each of their last four away games in the knockout stages of a UEFA competition. And, incidentally, without scoring a single goal. In the UEFA Europa League, they have only won one of their twelve away games in knockout stages (four draws, seven defeats) – a 4-1 win against Wolfsberger AC in February 2021. In the 2024/25 Premier League, they have lost ten of their 16 away games.

Tottenham’s recent record against Bundesliga teams gives them cause for optimism

It is therefore no surprise that the odds from the best bookmakers are stacked against Postecoglou’s side in Frankfurt. Odds just below the 3.00 mark are being offered for the Lilywhites. Nevertheless, their form against German teams gives cause for hope: the North Londoners are unbeaten in their last four European matches against Bundesliga teams (two wins, two draws), including three encounters with Frankfurt (one win, two draws). Prior to that, they had suffered four consecutive defeats against teams from Germany.

The focus is now on Son Heung-Min, who would surpass Harry Kane as Tottenham’s record European player with his next appearance (both currently on 67 appearances). However, he has not been the prolific striker of recent years. One goal every 217 minutes is his worst career record in a competition in which he has made more than two appearances. It is therefore likely to be difficult for the struggling Spurs to bring their offensive qualities, which are certainly there, to bear on the pitch in Frankfurt.

Frankfurt – Tottenham Head-to-head record / H2H record

Head to head: 1 – 2 – 2

The two teams have played a total of five European competitive matches so far, with Tottenham Hotspur narrowly leading the head-to-head record with two wins. However, the Eagles’ only home win came in the quarter-finals of the 1982 European Cup Winners’ Cup (2-1). In 2022/23, Frankfurt remained unbeaten at home against the Londoners in the Champions League (0-0).

Frankfurt – Tottenham Tip

Basically, our prediction for Frankfurt against Tottenham is that Hessen will advance, although it cannot be denied that it is a “do or die” game for the visitors from the Thames. The Spurs can only salvage their completely botched 2024/25 season by winning the Europa League title, but they suffered their tenth defeat in 16 away games in the Premier League on Sunday. Internationally, they have also lost their last four away games in knockout rounds of UEFA competitions.

Not only did SGE successfully complete their dress rehearsal against Heidenheim (3-0), but they are also unbeaten in their last eleven Europa League home games (six wins, five draws). While we would not categorically rule out extra time, we do not believe that the Hessians can be beaten in regular time.
