Full of goals in the first Saturday evening match of the year?
The new year is not yet ten days old and yet Borussia Dortmund is already threatening to lose all chances of winning the championship. BVB is currently nine points behind the leaders from Munich. A further increase in this gap can by no means be ruled out on the first day of the second leg, as the Black and Yellows face a real opponent with fears in their Saturday evening match.
None of the last seven away matches Borussia won in the Hessian metropolis. It is therefore all the more surprising that far lower odds on an away win are being offered ahead of the match between Frankfurt and Dortmund. This assessment is also unexpected from another point of view, as Eintracht was the team of the moment in the German top flight before the winter break.
Not only did coach Oliver Glasner’s team win six of their last seven Bundesliga games in 2021, but they also went into the short Christmas break with three wins in a row. It will therefore be interesting to see to what extent the Eagle Bearers have been able to compensate for this impressive form. If they manage to build on the aforementioned performances, there is probably even more value hidden between Frankfurt and Dortmund in the betting on the home side.
Frankfurt – Statistics & current form
Oliver Glasner had to wait until the seventh matchday at the beginning of October for his first Bundesliga win as Frankfurt coach. At FC Bayern, of all places, the Hessians fought their way to a 2-1 victory that was hardly thought possible. This was followed by another dry spell with three games in a row without a win, but since the lucky last-minute victory at SpVgg Greuther Fürth, the SGE has been unstoppable.
Six wins from the last seven Bundesliga matches and the fixation of the group win in the Europa League have ensured that the fans’ confidence in their own team has returned on the one hand and euphoria on the other. The Eagles have climbed from the bottom of the table to sixth place and are now just one point off a starting place in the top flight.
Frankfurt’s home strength is back!
In view of the outstanding form before the winter break as well as the fact that the black and red have lost only one of their last 17 home games in the league and have also left the pitch as winners three times in a row at home, it is definitely not our first option to place a bet on the away win between Frankfurt and Dortmund.
Incidentally, this is also supported by the interesting statistic that Eintracht have never lost their first match of the second round in the past six seasons. Only FC Bayern has a comparable record.
Oliver Glasner and the BVB curse
Only Oliver Glasner’s record might be a thorn in some people’s side, because in five attempts against BVB as Bundesliga coach, the Austrian has never picked up a point. He lost four times with Wolfsburg and Glasner also lost the first leg against Borussia with a clear score of 2:5. On Saturday evening, it could be another high-scoring affair, especially since in three of the last four Bundesliga matches in Frankfurt, a bet on the over 3.5 would have paid off. Eintracht scored at least twice in six of the last seven matches.
For various reasons, coach Glasner will have to do without Hauge, Barkok, Lenz, Lindström and da Costa this weekend. Jesper Lindström, who has always scored at least once in his last three Bundesliga matches and has even been involved in goals for the Hessians in four consecutive matches, will probably weigh the heaviest.

Trapp – Tuta, Hasebe, Ndicka – Rode, Sow – Chandler, Kostic – Paciencia, Kamada – Borré

Dortmund – Statistics & current form
The ongoing controversy surrounding the (non-)retention of Erling Haaland continues to be the dominant topic at Borussia Dortmund. From a purely sporting point of view, however, the Westphalians would be well advised to concentrate on the upcoming tasks in the Bundesliga. With a current deficit of nine points, the championship race is threatening to run out of steam.
Nevertheless, the Black and Yellows have had a passable first half of the season. Apart from the unnecessary exit in the Champions League, coach Marco Rose’s team is on target. Since 2018/19, the reigning cup winners have not had as many points on their account after the first half of the season as they have this season.
Nevertheless, the unsatisfactory performances immediately before the winter break are a cause for concern, when BVB won just one of four games and were beaten 3-2 at Hertha after a disastrous second half, among other things.
Dortmund in trouble away from home
Generally, the away weakness is one of the main reasons why a forecast for the visitors’ treble on Saturday evening between Frankfurt and Dortmund does not offer any particularly attractive value. In the calendar year 2021, eight games were lost away from home – more than at any time since 2014. The second-best home team in the league is only sixth in the away table and has conceded more defeats (four) than victories (three).
The Frankfurt vs. Dortmund odds on many goals, on the other hand, seem more interesting. In 2021/22, an average of no less than 4.53 goals per match were scored in matches involving BVB, which is more than any other first division team. In ten out of 17 cases alone, the 3.5 goal mark was broken, which is why we can imagine the same for the top match on Saturday.
With Akanji, Zagadou, Schmelzer, Morey and Wolf, five defensive players are out. In addition, Gio Reyna is back in rehabilitation training and could make his season debut in the next few weeks. The first eleven is therefore more or less self-evident, with Haaland as the only top player and Julian Brandt as one of two eights. Speaking of Brandt: In his last four Bundesliga games, the international scored three goals – exactly as many as in his first two seasons at BVB.
Predicted line-up of Dortmund:
Kobel – Meunier, Can, Hummels, Guerreiro – Dahoud – Brandt, Bellingham – Reus, T. Hazard – Haaland
Last matches played by Dortmund:

12/18 2021 – Hertha Berlin 3 – 2 Borussia Dortmund
12/15 2021 – Borussia Dortmund 3 – 0 Greuther Fürth
12/11 2021 – Vfl Bochum 1 – 1 Borussia Dortmund

12/07 2021 – Borussia Dortmund 5 – 0 Beşiktaş

12/04 2021 – Borussia Dortmund 2 – 3 Bayern Munich
Frankfurt – Dortmund Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
On the one hand, Borussia Dortmund has not won against any other opponent in the Bundesliga as often as against Eintracht Frankfurt. On the other hand, especially away from home, the Black and Yellows have not had much to gain in the Hessian financial metropolis in the recent past.
Three defeats and four draws are the result of the last four appearances in the Stadtwald. The first leg, however, ended 5:2 for the supposed favourites. If you want to bet on another away win between Frankfurt and Dortmund, you can get interesting Bet365 extra odds. Instead of a 2.00, there would be a 2.05 in the top for the BVB win.
Frankfurt – Dortmund Tip
An extremely attractive and probably also very exciting encounter awaits us on Saturday evening in the Bundesliga. In the duel of the hottest team of the last weeks in the calendar year 2021 from Frankfurt against the second-placed Borussia from Dortmund, a preliminary prediction on the outcome of the match is extremely complicated and associated with incalculable risk.
The SGE has won six of its last seven league games and has only lost one of its last 17 home games. On the other hand, BVB has so far been too inconsistent and inconsistent in its own performances away from home. Betting on the Rose team is therefore not recommended, especially as the cup winners have not won any of their last seven matches in Frankfurt.
Long story short: In this match, we are switching to the goal market and can well imagine that at least four goals will be scored. This is supported by the fact that Eintracht have scored twice in six of their last seven matches and the average of more than 4.5 goals scored in matches involving the Black and Yellows. Moreover, the aforementioned mark was broken in no less than seven of the past ten direct duels between these clubs.
In our opinion, the most promising value between Frankfurt and Dortmund lies in the prediction of four or more goals in the course of the match. At Betway we can pick up a 2.20 for this bet.
