Will the Catalans’ run continue?

On Good Friday, newly promoted Espanyol Barcelona wants to take another step towards securing its place in the league. The Catalans have been able to improve their situation, which was not very encouraging in winter, in a sustainable manner. The Periquitos have lost only one of their last seven La Liga games (three wins, three draws), which is why Espanyol Barcelona are now tipped to take all three points against Getafe.

However, Getafe CF are one of the strongest away teams in La Liga. The team from the Madrid suburbs have not only won their last two La Liga away games in a row, but are also sixth in the away table with six wins on the road. There is therefore definitely an element of risk in predicting another home win for Espanyol Barcelona against Getafe.

An interesting approach is to include under goals on your betting slip. After all, one of La Liga’s most solid home defenses is hosting here – Espanyol Barcelona has conceded only 16 goals in 15 home games, the same number as Real Madrid, the second-best away defense in Spain’s top flight. Only Atlético Madrid have conceded fewer goals away from home (12) than Getafe (14).

Espanyol Barcelona – statistics & current form

Last summer, Reial Club Deportivu Espanyol de Barcelona – RCDE for short – returned to La Liga via the promotion playoffs faster than expected, despite finishing the regular season in fourth place. Under promotion coach Manolo González, the lofty goal was, of course, to stay in the league. For much of the season, however, the Periquitos were only to be found at the bottom of the table. Most recently, they were consistently in a relegation spot between matchdays 14 and 21.

However, those in charge kept their feet on the ground, continued to express their confidence in Manolo González, and were ultimately rewarded with a clear upward trend. The Blue and Whites picked up 12 out of a possible 21 points from their last seven La Liga games, bringing their total to 35 points and putting them on course to avoid relegation with seven games to go, as the highest-ranked promoted team and six points clear of the first relegation spot.

Espanyol Barcelona have not lost at home since October

If Espanyol Barcelona manage to pick up another point against Getafe, it would be the next big step. This is also supported by their recent run at home. Since a 0-2 defeat to Sevilla FC back in October 2024, the Periquitos have gone unbeaten in nine consecutive La Liga home games (three wins, six draws), despite Real Madrid (1-0) and Atlético Madrid (0-0) visiting the RCDE Stadium during that period.

The chances of picking up the next point at home are correspondingly good, with the González XI’s solid home defense being the main reason for this. They have conceded just 16 goals in 15 La Liga home games, losing only three of those (six wins, six draws). This puts RCDE in ninth place in the home table. The only downside is that the last home game against Getafe CF was lost 0-1 in the 2023/24 Copa del Rey. At that time, however, there was still a division between the two teams…

Getafe – Statistics & current form

Getafe CF had a strong season in 2023/24, finishing twelfth in the final table without any relegation worries. The Madrid suburbanites are currently in a solid eleventh place and could even have had a say in the international starting places if they hadn’t lost four of their last seven league games (three wins) – including a bitter 1-3 home defeat against Las Palmas.

Nevertheless, the Azulones are unlikely to be dragged into the relegation battle, especially as they currently have a ten-point lead over 18th place. However, José Bordalás’s side travel to Catalonia as underdogs. The best bookmakers are not giving the Madrid suburbs much chance of an away win against Espanyol Barcelona.

Getafe has the second-best away defense in La Liga

The Azulones are one of the strongest away teams in La Liga. Not only has Getafe won its last two away games in a row, but it also has six away wins in 15 games (two draws, seven losses). Only Barcelona (eleven), Villarreal (nine), Real Madrid (eight), and Atlético Madrid (seven) have picked up more points on the road in 2024/25.

Also noteworthy: the Madrid suburbanites have conceded just 14 goals on the road, which is only bettered by Atlético Madrid (12) in the league. However, those 14 goals conceded are offset by just 17 goals scored, which is why it must be taken into account that it could be a tight affair against the defensively very stable Catalans. Finally, Diego Rico, who was shown a red card in the recent 1-3 defeat to Las Palmas, is also suspended, which certainly does not make an already very difficult task any easier.

Espanyol Barcelona – Getafe Head-to-head record / H2H record

Head to head: 15 – 10 – 15

The two teams have met a total of 40 times so far, with 15 wins and ten draws each, making the head-to-head record completely even. However, Getafe CF has won the last two matches against Espanyol Barcelona by a narrow 1–0 margin, including the first leg on December 9, 2024.

Espanyol Barcelona – Getafe Tip

All in all, our prediction for Espanyol Barcelona against Getafe is that the in-form Catalans will pick up another point, although they now face the second-best away defense in La Liga at the RCDE Stadium. The Madrid suburbs side will need to be broken down, but they have also scored “only” 17 goals in 15 away games. Against this backdrop, a low-scoring duel is on the cards, in which even a 0-0 result would not be entirely out of the question.

Accordingly, the approach at Merkur Bets is to go for the combined double chance bet 1X with under 3.5 goals, thus also covering the goalless draw. Considering that the Catalans have lost only one of their last seven league games (three wins, three draws), an away win for the Azulones seems highly unlikely.
