Does Darmstadt’s dry spell continue?
While FC Augsburg are already nine points clear of the relegation places in eleventh place, bottom-placed Darmstadt 98 are already twelve points off the safety margin. Although the Lilies won the first leg against FCA 2:1, they then went 16 Bundesliga games in a row without a win (six draws, ten defeats). The tendency is therefore for Darmstadt to win away against Augsburg.
However, the Bavarian Swabians are anything but strong away from home. The Fuggerstädter have won just four of their last 27 Bundesliga away games (six draws, 17 defeats), although three of those four victories came at promoted teams such as Darmstadt 98. Nonetheless, predicting a win for Darmstadt against Augsburg is too risky to create sufficient value
Meanwhile, it is very consistent to bet on a high-scoring game between the two clubs. On the one hand, Darmstadt 98 is the Bundesliga’s shooting gallery, having already conceded 52 goals. On the other hand, FC Augsburg have been waiting for another clean sheet for no fewer than 26 Bundesliga games. The Fuggerstädter have been particularly susceptible to set-pieces and have already conceded 17 goals from set-pieces – the highest number in the league. SVD, who have only won one of their twelve Bundesliga games at home in 2023/24 (three draws, eight defeats), are therefore not without a chance in this home game.
We therefore recommend betting on both teams scoring in this Saturday match.
Darmstadt – Statistics & current form
SV Darmstadt 98 continue to struggle in the Bundesliga. In the last relegation season in 2016/17, the Lilies finished bottom of the table without a chance. Seven years later, after 23 match days, they have just one more point (13) than in 2016/17 (twelve).
In the entire history of the Bundesliga after the introduction of the three-point classification, only Schalke 04 had ever scored fewer points after 23 games (just nine in 2020/21) than the club from southern Hesse, who are already twelve points behind the drop zone
Darmstadt could not be rewarded for a comeback
Darmstadt, who have now gone 16 Bundesliga games in a row without a win (six draws, ten defeats) since the 2:1 first-leg win against FC Augsburg, nevertheless sold themselves very expensively on the last two matchdays.
Although they were up against two very strong opponents in Stuttgart (1:2) and Werder Bremen (1:1), the Lilies certainly had chances to win, but ultimately had to contend with very strict rulings that cost SVD several goals. Nevertheless, the situation is not completely hopeless. At least they are “only” four points away from the relegation spot, which would allow them to remain in the first division in a relegation play-off
Darmstadt are weak at home and too vulnerable defensively
If Darmstadt win at home against Augsburg and 1. FC Köln lose their home game against league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, the Lilies could score a major victory. However, there are three clear arguments against this.
Firstly, with 52 goals already conceded, Darmstadt have the weakest defense in the Bundesliga. Secondly, the Lilies have won just one of their twelve Bundesliga home games at the Böllenfalltor stadium in the 2023/24 season (three draws, eight defeats). And thirdly: Marvin Mehlem, who broke his fibula against Bremen for the second time in three months, is now also out as a key player.
Predicted Darmstadt line-up:
Augsburg – Statistics & current form
When FC Augsburg lost 2-1 at home to newly promoted Darmstadt 98 on matchday seven, the situation in the Fuggerstädter was extremely precarious. Only five out of a possible 21 points were secured at the start of the season. In the table, FCA were just above the bottom line in 15th place.
Those responsible therefore pulled the ripcord and relieved Enrico Maaßen of his duties. Jess Thorup took over and maneuvered the Bavarian Swabians back into much calmer waters. With a points average of 1.31, the Dane led the club to eleventh place in the table. They are currently a comfortable nine points clear of the relegation places
Augsburg like to visit Darmstadt when away from home
The odds are still stacked in favor of the Fuggerstädter in the Darmstadt v Augsburg game, but they are struggling in the top flight of German soccer, especially away from home. FCA have won just four of their last 27 Bundesliga games away from home (six draws, 17 defeats).
Nevertheless, three of these four away victories were against promoted teams. In view of the fact that the Bavarian Swabians have been unbeaten at the Böllenfalltor stadium for nine consecutive matches (eight wins, one draw), the Thorup team could well be in with a chance despite their poor away record.
Augsburg have great comeback qualities
Not entirely unproblematic, however, is the fact that FCA, who have the sixth weakest defense in the Bundesliga with 41 goals conceded, simply cannot manage to keep a clean sheet. The Fuggerstädter have not kept a clean sheet in 26 Bundesliga games this season.
Nevertheless, no other Bundesliga team has been as unproblematic as Augsburg, who have already picked up 20 points this season after trailing. That is by far the highest figure in the league. Just last Sunday, the Bavarian Swabians also fought back at home against Freiburg after trailing 1-0 at the break and ultimately celebrated a 2-1 home win.
Predicted Augsburg line-up:
Darmstadt – Augsburg head-to-head comparison / H2H result
Head to head: 13 – 7 – 17
A total of 37 meetings have taken place between the two teams so far and FC Augsburg lead the head-to-head comparison with 17 wins. In the Bundesliga, however, the Lilies have prevailed in two of the five matches so far. The first leg in the Fuggerstadt also went to SV Darmstadt 98 with a 2:1 victory
Darmstadt – Augsburg betting tip
The bookmakers’ betting odds for Darmstadt v Augsburg are in favor of the visitors, which is due to the South Hessians’ 16-game winless streak in the Bundesliga (six draws, ten defeats). However, the Lilies already won the first leg 2:1, have shown themselves to be more combative of late and now welcome a team that has struggled in the Bundesliga, especially away from home. The outcome of the game is correspondingly unclear, which is why the three-way system is not particularly suitable
The prediction for a high-scoring game between Darmstadt and Augsburg is much more valid. Not only does SVD have the weakest defense in the Bundesliga, having already conceded 52 goals, but the visitors from the Fuggerstadt have conceded at least one goal in all of their last 26 Bundesliga matches and are also anything but stable at the back.
