Whose winless streak snaps at re-start?

For six weeks, Andalusian showpiece club Sevilla FC had to hold out in a direct relegation spot during the Winter World Cup. Now, the Nervionenses have the chance to climb back above the top with an away win at a direct neighbour in the table. However, the betting on an away win for the Rojiblancos in Celta Vigo against Sevilla is not very promising.

At the moment, the Andalusians are waiting for five league games in a row without another win (two draws, three defeats). However, this drought is topped by the hosts from Galicia. Celta Vigo have not won any of their last seven league games (two draws, five defeats). The forecast for Celta Vigo against Sevilla must therefore take into account the fact that two teams with a poor run of form and a lack of confidence will clash.

Much will also depend on how both teams have been able to use the World Cup break to regroup after the coaching changes already made.

With both teams averaging a maximum of one goal per game – Celta Vigo 14 and Sevilla 13 goals in 14 league games – we think betting on less than 2.5 goals offers the best value.

Celta Vigo – Statistics & current form

Although Real Club Celta de Vigo have never won the national championship before and have also lost all four Copa del Rey finals they have reached. Nevertheless, as an established first division club and former Champions League participant, Celta Vigo is the absolute flagship of Galicia.

Currently, the Celtiñas have been playing in La Liga without interruption since the summer of 2012. Three of the last ten seasons, the Celestes finished just above the line in 17th place. However, it was only last season that they finished in a commanding eleventh place in the final table.

Without a win in seven league games

The season so far has been all the more disappointing for the Galicians, who therefore pulled the ripcord at the beginning of November and fired successful coach Eduardo Coudet. Carlos Carvalhal took over, but has not yet been able to turn things around.

In the two games against Osasuna (1:2) and Rayo Vallecano (0:0) – two teams that are well within the Celestes’ reach – Celta Vigo picked up only one of six possible points under the Portuguese. This means that they are now on record for a drought of seven league games in a row without a win (two draws, five defeats).

None of the last four games against Sevilla won

After all, the Celtiñas won their two most recent Copa del Rey matches against lower-ranked teams and also won a test match against Premier League side Brentford 3-1 during the World Cup break, which is why the betting odds on Celta Vigo against Sevilla are slightly tilted towards the Galicians.

However, the Celestes are also hampered by their poor record against the Nervionenses. Celta Vigo have waited four league games for another win against the Andalusians (one draw, three defeats). That’s their longest winless streak against the Rojiblancos since September 1982 (six league games then)….

Sevilla – Statistics & current form

Although Sevilla Fútbol Club can boast only one Spanish championship at national level besides five overall Copa del Rey victories, which moreover dates back to 1946. With six overall Europa League victories, the Andalusians are nevertheless one of the country’s flagships.

Accordingly, it is difficult to reconcile the image of the traditional club with the fact that the Nervionenses are currently in a deep relegation battle after selling out last summer and, after 22 years of continuous membership in La Liga, have to fear for remaining in the league.

First league match won under Sampaoli

After the start of the season had already gone wrong, those responsible relieved successful coach Julen Lopetegui of his duties and installed a prominent successor in Jorge Sampaoli. However, even the Argentinean has not yet managed to turn things around. Only one of the seven league games under the 62-year-old’s leadership was won (three draws, three defeats).

As a result, the Rojiblancos are still in a direct relegation spot and are now condemned to score at their neighbours Celta Vigo. Nevertheless, the Andalusians have not let anything go to waste in the Copa del Rey either, celebrating two unchallenged victories at lower-ranked clubs.

Lost five of last ten matches at Celta Vigo

However, the opening of the transfer window is imminent, which could result in further departures. Most recently, Isco’s contract was terminated, while Nice are still looking to end Dolberg’s loan during the winter break. Keeper Bono has also been on the wish list of numerous clubs since his performance with Morocco at the World Cup.

So there is a lot of unrest from the outside, which means that it is quite risky to predict that the Nervionenses will win a point against Sevilla in Galicia. Although the Rojiblancos have won their last two away games here, they have only won one of their last eight league games in the Balaídos (two draws, five defeats).

Celta Vigo – Sevilla Direct comparison / H2H balance

Head to head: 39 – 18 – 49

There have been a total of 106 meetings between the two teams so far and the Rojiblancos lead the direct comparison with 49 wins. Most recently, Sevilla have gone unbeaten in four consecutive league games against the Celestes (three wins, one draw) and have also won their last two away games at the Balaídos.

Celta Vigo – Sevilla Tip

In the run-up to the basement clash between Celta Vigo and Sevilla, the odds are swinging in the direction of the home side, who have, however, not won for seven league games in a row (two draws, five defeats). The Rojiblancos’ record doesn’t look much better, however, as they have only managed a single treble under Jorge Sampaoli in the same period (three draws, three defeats) and haven’t scored more than one goal in any of their seven league games under the Argentine.

In any case, it is very striking how difficult both teams have found it to score goals. With 14 goals from 14 league games, the Celtiñas are averaging one goal per game. The Andalusians, on the other hand, with 13 goals, have an average of 0.93 goals per league match.
