Are the Clarets paying a lesson again against Spurs?
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club has been one of the positives of this young Premier League season so far. Despite the departure of Harry Kane, the Lily Whites have a proud seven points after three games. Behind Manchester City and West Ham United, the Londoners are in third place and will be looking for a third straight win this weekend.
The odds are also pretty good, because in the run-up to the Burnley vs Tottenham match, betting on the away win provides lower odds. At Interwetten, for example, an attractive 1.90 can be grabbed on the Spurs.
While the team of coach Ange Postecoglou could at best even take over the top of the table, for the promoted team from the east of Lancashire it is all about scoring for the first time. After two defeats in their first two matches, the Clarets will be hoping for that all-important sense of achievement.
They will be happy to recall their last Premier League home match against Spurs in February 2022, which they won 1-0. In view of the impressions so far, however, the forecast for Saturday’s clash between Burnley and Tottenham seems to be a little further away from the hosts.
Burnley – statistics & current form
Burnley Football Club are taking a very different approach in 2023/24 than they have in their Premier League seasons. Coach Vincent Kompany has already relied on a more offensive and bold style of play in the second-tier Championship and wants to have it practiced one tier higher. Fittingly, in each of their first two matches, the promoted side fielded the youngest starting eleven in the English top flight, with an average age of just under 24.
Admittedly, the Clarets have also had to pay a lot of dues in these two games. They lost 3-0 against Manchester City and 3-1 against Aston Villa. With the only away game so far at Luton canceled, Saturday will be Burnley’s third home game in a row. Once again, Burnley will be underdogs against Tottenham according to the odds.
When will Kompany adapt his game idea?
This assessment is not really surprising, after all, the former FA Cup winner could start a season with three consecutive defeats for the fourth time in England’s Beletage. Defensively, in particular, the promoted team must improve if it is not to miss out on the mid-table position at an early stage.
However, we dare to doubt whether this can actually be achieved, because coach Kompany’s idea of the game inevitably entails a number of risks. While these could still be compensated for by quality advantages in the championship season, any spaces left open or individual mistakes/lack of concentration are now punished immediately.
Although the Clarets were able to boost their confidence during the week with a last-minute win in the EFL Cup away at Nottingham Forest (1-0), we are still far from making a prediction on the double chance 1X between Burnley and Tottenham. This is also supported by the fact that the home side has not won two consecutive competitive games against Spurs since 2010.
Predicted Burnley lineup:
Burnley (Expected lineup) 4-2-3-1
Tottenham – statistics & current form
After the departure of Harry Kane, many pundits predicted a tough season for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. However, the fears have not materialized so far. Quite the contrary. The Londoners have surprised all along the line in the first three matchdays and have already been able to collect seven points. A somewhat bumpy 2-2 draw with Brentford at the start of the season was followed by two clean-sheet victories over Manchester United and Bournemouth (both 2-0).
The Lily Whites’ very encouraging start to the season is closely linked to the coaching of Ange Postecoglou, who has made an excellent impression in the English capital since taking up his post in July. Tottenham play a very meticulous, dynamic and handsome attacking soccer that combines many exciting elements. As a collective, Spurs look stronger than in recent years with Harry Kane.
Has the EFL Cup exit sharpened the senses again?
It will still be exciting to see whether the Champions League finalist of 2019 can maintain the proven level over a longer period of time. The first doubts became clear during the week, when Tottenham lost the capital derby in the EFL Cup at Fulham FC after a penalty shootout. However, it has to be said that coach Postecoglou rotated through the team and brought in Kulusevski, Son, Sarr and Maddison from the bench.
The aforementioned James Maddison, who moved from relegated Leicester to Spurs in the summer, has already underlined his added value with three goals in the first three match days. If you want to bet on the England international scoring his second goal of the season at Turf Moor on Saturday, you can dust off high odds of 3.20 on a corresponding bet before the Burnley vs Tottenham match.
Finally, coach Postecoglou, a multiple title winner who moved to north London from Celtic Glasgow, has an outstanding record against promoted sides. His last nine league matches against newcomers have all been victorious, with a goal difference of 31:7. It could also help that the Lily Whites have scored at least once in 21 of their last 22 PL games. The one or other goal could therefore fall on Saturday afternoon again
Predicted lineup of Tottenham:
Tottenham (Expected lineup) 4-2-3-1
Burnley – Tottenham Direct comparison / H2H balance
Since the English top flight has gone under the name Premier League there have been 16 clashes between these clubs. Ten of those 16 matches were won by Tottenham. In addition, there have been three Burnley victories as well as three point-splits.
Interestingly, all three of the Clarets’ aforementioned victories came in front of a home crowd. The last home game in February 2022 was also won 1-0 by the Lancashire reds. A year and a half later, however, things have changed for both teams, so the significance of this H2H record is limited.
Burnley – Tottenham Tip
For the first time since the summer of 2022, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club has a chance to win three Premier League games in a row. If consistency was already the major shortcoming in last season’s sobering campaign, the Londoners are now preparing to confirm the remarkable impressions from the first three matchdays. If they succeed in doing so, there are many indications that coach Ange Postecoglou’s team will win the next three matches.
This opinion is obviously shared by the bookmakers, who are offering lower betting odds on the visiting team in the run-up to the Burnley v Tottenham match. Spurs have won ten of their 16 Premier League games against the Clarets, even going scoreless twice in the English top flight recently, and have failed to score in only one of their past 22 league matches.
It’s also worth noting that the promoted side has been a bit of a learning curve so far, conceding six goals already and also boasting the youngest squad in the league. However, coach Vincent Kompany is not backing away from his courageous style of play, which in turn should play into the cards of the qualitatively stronger Londoners. We therefore go with the assessment of the bookmakers and try it between Burnley and Tottenham with the tip on the away win.
