Will the Toffees manage to get out of the crisis?
Update: The match between Burnley and Everton has been cancelled due to the current pandemic situation. However, most of the remaining matches on Boxing Day in the Premier League will take place as things stand. For example, Tottenham and Crystal Palace face each other in a London derby.
For a short time, fans in England had to fear for their beloved Boxing Day. In the end, however, the league decided to go ahead with the regular fixtures, so that many families will be able to enjoy their favourite pastime on Boxing Day – going on a pilgrimage to the stadium. A crisis duel will be played at Turf Moor, with the match between Burnley and Everton kicking off on Sunday at 4 p.m.
The home side from the north are in acute relegation trouble this season and have celebrated just one win so far this season. But Everton can not meet their own expectations and had to accept a lot of setbacks lately. This is one of the reasons why betting odds of over 3.00 are offered on Burnley vs Everton.
Both teams have not only had to deal with poor results recently, but also with personnel problems. For Burnley, the Boxing Day clash is even their first game in a fortnight.
Burnley – Statistics & current form
The club from the north of England owes its success in recent years in particular to Sean Dyche. The 2021/22 season is the sixth year in a row in the English football top flight and only 2018/19 was Burnley weaker than this season.
Three league games without a goal
While some teams have played 18 games, Burnley have only 15 games in the table. The Tottenham game was cancelled due to snow and most recently the games against Watford and Aston Villa were Covid-related. Burnley were therefore a little out of rhythm and have not played a game for a fortnight.
However, the performances before that were not particularly successful, because in the last three Premier League games there was not a single goal for the Clarets. The last goal in the English top flight was more than a month ago – in the 3-3 draw against Crystal Palace on 20 November. In the last three league games, there have been just three shots on goal in total for Burnley. With those numbers, between Burnley and Everton, predicting that neither team will score is a good option.
Boxing Day does not suit Burnley
Three games without a goal, just one win on the season and two weeks without competitive action – the omens are far from positive for Burnley. A look at recent Boxing Day results do not favour the home side either. Burnley have won just one of their last seven games on 26 December, with Dyche’s side suffering no fewer than five defeats in the process. Accordingly, there is no value to be found in betting on Burnley.
Predicted line-up of Burnley:
Pope – Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton – McNeil, Westwood, Cork, Gudmundsson – Wood, Rodriguez
Last matches played by Burnley:
Premier League
12/12 2021 – Burnley 0 – 0 West Ham
12/04 2021 – Newcastle United 1 – 0 Burnley
12/01 2021 – Wolverhampton 0 – 0 Burnley
11/20 2021 – Burnley 3 – 3 Crystal Palace
11/06 2021 – Chelsea London 1 – 1 Burnley
Everton – Statistics & current form
With ten points from the first four games, Rafael Benitez made a very successful start to his tenure as Everton coach. As a former Liverpool coach, there was some scepticism at his introduction, which was initially wiped away. However, the tide has since turned and a Benitez sacking would no longer be a surprise.
Only one win in eleven games
Aspirations and reality have been far apart for the team from the Merseyside not only since this season, however, 19 points from 17 games is a pure disappointment. Compared to last year, that’s a drop of no less than 13 points. Everton have disappointed across the board, especially in recent months, winning only one of their most recent eleven league games.
Away from Goodison Park, the Toffees are now seven games without a win. However, last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Champions League winners Chelsea was a respectable result. Especially since the Toffees are currently plagued by personnel problems. With Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, the two top strikers are currently missing. Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes are also unavailable to Rafael Benitez on Boxing Day.
Lots of spectacle in the second 45 minutes
Outages that can certainly be described as serious and yet there is still enough quality not to be considered outsiders against Burnley. Those who find predicting the winner between Burnley and Everton too risky should consider the option that more goals will come in the second half.
21 goals have been scored by Everton so far this season, and no less than 16 goals have been scored in the second half. This is 76 per cent of all goals, which is the highest in the Premier League. Including the goals conceded, there have been 17 goals in half-time one so far and 33 in the second period.
Predicted Everton line-up:
Pickford – Godfrey, Holgate, Keane, Branthwaite, Kenny – Gordon, Doucoure, Gomes, Iwobi – Dobbin
Last games played by Everton:
Premier League
12/16 2021 – Chelsea London 1 – 1 Everton
12/12 2021 – Crystal Palace 3 – 1 Everton
12/06 2021 – Everton 2 – 1 Arsenal London
12/01 2021 – Everton 1 – 4 Liverpool FC
11/28 2021 – Brentford 1 – 0 Everton
Burnley – Everton Direct Comparison / H2H Record
In the English Premier League, Burnley have celebrated four home wins against Everton Football Club so far, making the Toffees one of their favourite opponents. Against no other team have the Clarets celebrated more home victories at Turf Moor. However, this season’s first encounter of the season went to Everton 3-1. In 2014/15 and 2018/19, the Merseyside club achieved the “league double”.
Interestingly, this clash also took place in 2018/19 (5-1) and 2019/20 (1-0) on Boxing Day, with Everton winning both games.
Burnley – Everton Tip
Neither the home side nor the visitors will be particularly confident. Accordingly, a footballing treat is by no means to be expected, as recent results have been sobering for both teams. However, a 2.46 offered between Burnley and Everton for a bet on a home win is not really comprehensible. Especially as Burnley have only won one league game so far.
Surely Everton have personnel problems, but to trade Burnley as favourites, given their own lack of form (three league games without a goal in a total of only three shots on goal), is over the top. The direct comparison and the Boxing Day record of Everton (six games without defeat) and Rafael Benitez (six wins in eight games) favour the visitors. Winning possibility and probability are very well balanced here and accordingly odds on the visitors are recommended at five units for Burnley vs Everton.
