How will Dortmund react to the first setback?
Only three matchdays have been played in the 60th season of the Bundesliga and yet Germany’s highest division has already set its first new records. For the first time, SV Werder Bremen scored three goals from the 89th minute onwards, turning a 2-0 deficit at Borussia Dortmund into a 3-2 away win.
This loss of points by the Black and Yellows also allowed FC Bayern München to pull away from the chasing pack early on. With nine points out of a possible nine, the Reds, who were the only team to win all three games, are leading the table with a commanding 15:1 score. The three main pursuers are currently Borussia Mönchengladbach, Union Berlin and Mainz 05, each with seven points. Consequently, the top match is quickly decided when Bayern welcome Gladbach to the Allianz Arena on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig, Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt and Champions League contenders Bayer Leverkusen are three teams still winless in league play that were not expected to be so in the run-up to the season. The pressure is correspondingly great for the clubs, who certainly started the new season with higher ambitions, to achieve a turnaround this weekend. There is a lot of suspense in all nine matches for which you can find betting odds and tips in the Bundesliga on Matchday 4 on this page.
Freiburg vs. Bochum – 26 August, 20:30
Although SC Freiburg lost the first home match of the still young season with 1:3 against Borussia Dortmund. However, the Black Forest side won both away games with 5:0 goals. Six points and fifth place are accordingly respectable, while VfL Bochum took over the red lantern in the table last weekend with the 0:7 home defeat – the highest Bochum home defeat in Bundesliga history.
The team from the Ruhr area is still without points, has a desolate goal difference of -9 (3:12) and has not been able to win any of the last six away games in Breisgau (three draws, three defeats). Accordingly, there is no alternative to betting on a home win for Sport-Club in the Bundesliga on Matchday 4.
RB Leipzig vs. Wolfsburg – 27 August, 15:30
Two draws and one defeat – that’s the score so far for RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg, both of whom have thus experienced a false start. While it is the Saxons’ weakest Bundesliga start ever, the Wolves have not had such a bad start since the 2014/15 season. After all, the Lower Saxons still ended up as runners-up, which is why it would be far too early to bury our heads in the sand.
Now, however, VfL must turn the tide at home to Saxony, of all teams. RBL is unbeaten in seven home games against Wolfsburg (five wins, two draws) and hopes to extend this streak against the so far very tame Wolves. The Green-Whites are the only club apart from Bayer Leverkusen to have failed to score in two of their three league games so far. Therefore, bets on the 4th matchday in the Bundesliga that a maximum of one team will score in this duel are correspondingly interesting. After all, the Red Bulls have not been cold-blooded enough in front of the opponent’s box lately either.
Mainz vs. Leverkusen – 27 August, 15:30 hrs
When Bayer Leverkusen surprisingly lost to Elversberg in the 1st round of the DFB Pokal, the mood was bad but the crisis was still far away. Three league games later, however, the Werkself is in a direct relegation spot with three more defeats and zero points. Accordingly, it is now four consecutive defeats to start the season, which is an absolute novelty for the Rhinelanders in professional football.
Things look much more pleasant for the zero-fives, who got off to a strong start with seven points out of a possible nine, thanks primarily to their defence. FSV have conceded only two goals so far – second best behind leaders Bayern Munich. Even with a view to the fact that the Werkself is coming to Rheinhessen with the worst offensive performance in the league – Leverkusen have only scored one goal in three league games – the predictions in the Bundesliga on Matchday 4 tend to go in the direction of the home side. On the other hand, betting on Bayer 04 scoring a maximum of one goal in this away match seems to be a little safer.
Hoffenheim vs. Augsburg – 27 August, 15:30
At first it looked as if Hoffenheim’s negative streak would continue under André Breitenreiter after the 3-1 opening defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach. However, after ten Bundesliga games in a row without a win, the Sinsheim side then rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat VfL Bochum 3-2, a result they confirmed impressively with a 3-0 away win at Leverkusen last weekend. With six points out of a possible nine, the world in the Kraichgau thus already looks very different again.
Meanwhile, FC Augsburg also celebrated an away win in Leverkusen (2:1), but lost their first two home games of the season with a total of 1:6 goals. Accordingly, the betting odds in the Bundesliga on Matchday 4 are clearly in favour of TSG, who now also receive their declared favourite opponent. Hoffenheim have won 13 of their previous 22 league games against the Fuggerstädter – the Sinsheim team has not won more often against any other Bundesliga team. Tip 1 is therefore well worth playing in this match.
Hertha vs. Dortmund – 27 August, 15:30
Everything already looked like the third win in the third league match for Borussia Dortmund when the black and yellows led 2-0 against Werder Bremen in a complicated match shortly before the final whistle. But then BVB became the first Bundesliga team ever to concede three goals after the 89th minute of the match and even left the pitch as losers in the end. The Westphalians’ desire to put this defeat behind them and win the next match is correspondingly great.
Edin Terzic’s team’s strength on the road is now clearly in their favour. In the calendar year 2022, Borussia won 23 out of a possible 30 points from ten league away games. No other Bundesliga team has been stronger away from home.
BVB’s chances are further boosted by Hertha’s false start, which saw them pick up just one point out of a possible nine and score only two goals with a dismal chance conversion rate of just 7%. Accordingly, there is a lot of value to be found in betting on an away win for the black and yellow team.
Schalke vs. Union Berlin – 27 August, 15:30
While FC Schalke remained unbeaten in their two consecutive league games after the opening 3-1 defeat in Cologne. However, with two point-splits to their name, they are still winless and are not doing too well with two points out of a possible nine.
Things look much better for the visitors from the capital, who have been able to prolong their strong run from the final spurt of the pre-season and are now on ten consecutive league games without defeat (eight wins, two draws).
Everything in this context looks like the Köpenicker are also a hot candidate for the three points at Schalke. However, in the Bundesliga on Matchday 4, bets on the Ironmen are by no means a foregone conclusion, because in four Bundesliga duels so far, Union Berlin have never been able to win against Schalke (three draws, one defeat).
Also because S04 already managed to keep up with an opponent who started strongly in the 2:2 draw against Gladbach, it is much more advisable to switch to another betting option. The bet that both teams will score offers the greatest possible value. After all, in three of their four Bundesliga duels, there have always been goals on both sides.
Bayern vs. Gladbach – 27 August, 18:30
The clash between Bayern and Gladbach is the second most played duel in the Bundesliga (108 games compared to 110 encounters between Bayern and Werder Bremen) and will absolutely live up to the hoped-for top match character on Saturday evening at prime time, looking at the results so far. The Reds were the only team to win their first three games and have already compiled a goal difference of +14 (15:1). Never since the Bundesliga was founded has a team been more dominant after three games.
Meanwhile, Gladbach are still unbeaten and have made a fantastic start with seven points out of a possible nine and 6:3 goals. Consequently, the top team in the table will be hosting the second team in the table, which is also highly explosive because the team from the Lower Rhine has not lost any of its last three games against Munich (two wins, one draw). This is another reason why it makes sense to avoid the three-way system and use the betting odds for a high-scoring top match in the Bundesliga on Matchday 4, in which at least four goals will be scored.
Cologne vs. VfB Stuttgart – August 28, 15:30
After the 3:1 win at the start of the season, Cologne also scored recently against DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig (2:2) and against Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt (1:1). For the first time in six years, the Cologne team remained without a defeat on the first three matchdays of a Bundesliga season, although things have otherwise been mixed. In the Cup, they lost to Regensburg in the first round, while in the Conference League Qualifiers, they lost the first leg against MOL Fehérvár 2-1.
Accordingly, VfB Stuttgart, who secured their relegation last season with a 2-1 home win over Cologne, could well be in with a chance. Critically, however, the Swabians are the only Bundesliga team in the 2022 calendar year still without an away win, which makes it quite difficult to predict the outcome of this match – especially as the Effzeh have to compete again in the Conference League during the week. We therefore recommend betting odds of over 2.5 goals in the Bundesliga on Matchday 4.
Werder Bremen vs. Frankfurt – 28 August, 17:30
In early summer, Eintracht Frankfurt recorded an absolute milestone in the club’s history by winning the UEFA Europa League overall. Even then, however, performance in the Bundesliga was secondary to success in the second most important European competition for club teams. After all, the SGE remained winless in the last eight league games of the pre-season. A streak that extended to a total of eleven games after three matchdays of the 2022/23 season (seven draws, four defeats).
Now, of all times, Eintracht have to play a promoted team in good form, which not only scored a lot in the late 3:2 win in Dortmund, but also has the second-best attack in the Bundesliga behind Bayern with seven goals from three games. Thus, things could continue to go well for the team from the Weser, although it could prove to be negligent to write off the guests from Hesse prematurely. In any case, we expect more goals from the in-form North Germans, which is why we think it makes the most sense to bet on Bremen scoring at least two goals again on matchday 4 in the Bundesliga.
