Are Bayern heading for another start-finish victory?
The first matchday of the 2022/23 season in the Bundesliga is history and there are once again a number of winners, but also some losers. In terms of the standings, it’s a familiar picture right from the start, with FC Bayern München once again leading the Bundesliga after a brilliant 6-1 away win at Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt.
Borussia Dortmund – considered by many experts to be a promising candidate to challenge FCB’s place on the sunny side of the table once again after this summer’s transfer offensive – also got off to a successful start to the new season with a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. On the second matchday, however, BVB will face a tough challenge in a Friday evening game away to SC Freiburg. The Black Forest side celebrated a 4-0 win in Augsburg at the start of the season and thus occupy second place in the standings, which are not very meaningful at the moment.
Meanwhile, reigning DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig were not satisfied with their start. The Saxons could not get past a 1-1 draw at VfB Stuttgart on matchday one and will be looking to secure their first three points of the new season against 1. FC Köln on Saturday lunchtime.
At the same time, Hertha BSC and Eintracht Frankfurt are also fighting to avoid a false start after their clear opening defeats in a direct duel. Meanwhile, promoted Schalke will face NRW rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach in the top match of the week on Saturday evening. In total, there are nine top-class matches for which betting odds and tips are available on this page in the Bundesliga on Matchday 2.
Freiburg vs. Dortmund – 12 August, 20:30
SC Freiburg made a highly successful start to the new season with a brilliant 4-0 away win at FC Augsburg. With Ritsu Doan, Michael Gregoritsch and Matthias Ginter, three newcomers were on the scoresheet, which means that this year’s DFB Cup finalists seem to be well prepared for the new season and are confident going into the home match with Borussia Dortmund.
The black-and-yellows, meanwhile, also celebrated a successful start to the season and followed up their unchallenged 3-0 victory over 1860 Munich in the cup with a 1-0 win over Leverkusen. All in all, BVB are still without conceding a goal in the 2022/23 season. Accordingly, we see a lot of value in Bundesliga matchday 2 betting tips on a rather tactical and not too high-scoring duel between two defensively strong German representatives in the UEFA competitions. We therefore bet on under 2.5 goals.
Leverkusen vs. Augsburg – 13 August, 15:30
For Bayer Leverkusen, the start of the season could hardly have gone worse so far. The Werkself not only disgraced itself in the DFB Pokal against SV Elversberg, a team promoted to the third division, but also lost the Bundesliga opener in Dortmund. Accordingly, the third-placed team of the previous season is under pressure in the first home game of the new season against FC Augsburg, who are considered the Rhinelanders’ absolute favourite team. Bayer 04 have never lost a league match against FCA before.
The Fuggerstädter also started weakly. Although the Bavarian Swabians fulfilled their compulsory task in the DFB Cup against fourth-division team Blau-Weiß Lohne. In the top flight of German football, however, they suffered a hefty 0:4 home defeat against SC Freiburg. Thus, FCA is also on the road to redemption. We expect two teams who want to score at all costs on the second matchday. A lot of value is therefore offered in the Bundesliga on Matchday 2 betting on an early goal in this duel.
RB Leipzig vs. Cologne – 13 August, 15:30
Just two and a half months ago, RB Leipzig celebrated the biggest success in the club’s young history by winning the DFB Cup. However, the red bulls, who have made such a great leap forward since the installation of Domenico Tedesco as head coach, have not been able to build on this coup recently. In the Super Cup, RBL was clearly shown the limits in a 3:5 loss to Bayern, and in the Bundesliga opener in Stuttgart, the Saxons only managed a single point after a 1-1 draw.
Cologne, whose headlines have been dominated by anger over the departure of Anthony Modeste, got off to a much better start. The cathedral city celebrated a 3:1 home victory against Schalke 04, which they now want to build on in the Red Bull Arena. It is extremely difficult to make accurate predictions about the outcome of this match in the Bundesliga on Matchday 2 at such an early stage in the season. However, with Leipzig already conceding six goals in their first two competitive games of the young season, betting on goals on both sides seems very promising.
Hoffenheim vs. Bochum – 13 August, 15:30
Accomplished compulsory task in the DFB Pokal and opening defeat in the Bundesliga – that is the first conclusion not only for TSG Hoffenheim but also for VfL Bochum. Last season, both teams were already on an equal footing. Only four points separated the Sinsheim team from the Ruhr region in the final table. Both direct duels went to the Bochum team, which has a win rate of 66.67% against TSG in official matches.
The betting odds for another point win for Bochum in Kraichgau on matchday 2 in the Bundesliga are correspondingly interesting. We are therefore risking Double Chance X2, especially as the Sinsheim side have now not won for a season-high ten Bundesliga games.

Hertha vs. Frankfurt – 13 August, 15:30
After Hertha BSC barely escaped with a black eye at the end of the 2021/22 season with victory over Hamburger SV in the relegation, the old problems are already showing up early in the new season. The first-round exit from the DFB Cup was followed by the loss of the city derby against Union Berlin at the start of the Bundesliga. Accordingly, the “Big City Club” is still in a bad way under Magath’s successor Sandro Schwarz.
Meanwhile, Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt did not cover themselves with too much glory on the first matchday. Although the SGE didn’t let anything go in the DFB Cup, they had absolutely nothing to offer FC Bayern in the clear 1:6 home defeat. Nevertheless, the players from the Main metropolis looked much more mature, especially in the away game against second-division side Magdeburg, which is why we believe the Hessians will win the away game at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
Werder Bremen vs. VfB Stuttgart – 13 August, 15:30
With the 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig at the start of the season, VfB Stuttgart reached a small milestone: The Swabians overtook Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga’s perpetual table and climbed to fourth place. Now, however, the Baden-Württemberger are hosting the third-placed team in this tableau, which could well result in a secret top match between two teams with a combined total of nine German championships.
Where exactly the teams stand who go into the 2022/23 season with the primary goal of “staying in the league” is still unclear after the two draws at the start. However, in view of the fact that both VfB Stuttgart and SV Werder Bremen drew with goals on the first matchday, we see plenty of potential for another high-scoring match between two veterans of the Beletage of German football. We therefore recommend betting on goals on both sides in the Bundesliga on Matchday 2.
Schalke vs. Gladbach – 13 August, 18:30
While FC Schalke 04 celebrated direct promotion back to Germany’s top division as champions in the wake of a strong season in the 2. Bundesliga. However, the team has only won three of its last 51 Bundesliga matches – including the 3-1 home defeat in Cologne on the first matchday of the current season.
The promoted team faces a correspondingly difficult task against the goal-happy Foals, as the team from the Lower Rhine region has already scored twelve goals in its first two competitive matches of the 2022/23 season, both of which were victorious. The betting odds for an away win for Borussia, who have also only lost one of their last eleven competitive games against S04 (five wins, five draws), are therefore very interesting in the Bundesliga on Matchday 2.
Mainz vs. Union Berlin – 14 August, 15:30
Not only were 1. FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC Union Berlin two winners of the previous season. The two clubs also left no stone unturned in the new season. Both teams made it into the 2nd round of the DFB Cup and both teams started the Bundesliga with an opening victory. Therefore, the odds on this match are comparatively even in the Bundesliga on Matchday 2.
The fact that both opponents have scored at least three goals in every single match of this young season is striking. Because the bookmakers’ quotes are also very interesting, the greatest value is to be found in betting on another 2.5 goals in this match.
Bayern vs. Wolfsburg – 14 August, 17:30
Much has been discussed about the competitiveness of the German record champions after the departures of Niklas Süle to BVB, Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona and Corentin Tolisso to Lyon. But it took the Reds just two games to silence all the critics for the time being. Not only did the Bavarians win the Super Cup 5:3 against Leipzig, but they also celebrated an impressive 6:1 away victory in Frankfurt at the start of the Bundesliga.
VfL Wolfsburg, under ex-Bayern coach Niko Kovac, had a much less successful campaign, winning 1-0 in the cup against Carl Zeiss Jena and losing 2-2 to promoted Werder Bremen on matchday one. In our view, the chances of the Lower Saxons winning a point are correspondingly slim. Instead, we assume that the FCB will once again not let anything go to waste. Accordingly, it is highly recommended to bet on the next clear victory of the Reds in the Bundesliga on matchday 2, which is why we log in the handicap of -2 on our betting slip.
