Will Lukaku shoot the Giallorossi to the top of the table?
After a shaky start in Serie A, AS Roma are slowly but surely getting back on track. The Giallorossi won 2-0 against in-form promoted Frosinone on Sunday to record their third win from their last five competitive games (one draw, one defeat). This compares with the Swiss, who have lost four of their last seven competitive matches (two wins, one draw). Accordingly, there seems to be no alternative to betting on a home win for the Italians against Servette Geneva in AS Roma.
The Giallorossi are an absolute home power at international level. In UEFA competitions, AS Roma have lost only one of their last 26 home games (19 wins, six draws). This contrasts with the debutants from Lac Léman, who already suffered a 2-0 defeat against Slavia Prague in their opening match. The forecast for AS Roma against Servette Geneva is therefore very clearly for a home win for José Mourinho’s team.
The Belgian goes into this match with an incredible streak: In his last twelve games in the Europa League, the forward has scored without exception. That’s not just a running record, it’s the longest run ever by a footballer in Europe’s second most important competition for club sides.
AS Roma – Statistics & current form
AS Roma have enjoyed some resounding success of late, particularly internationally. In José Mourinho’s first year in charge, the Giallorossi won the inaugural UEFA Conference League and secured their first international title since the 1961 Fairs Cup.
The next coup almost came a year later. Last season, La Lupa reached the final of the Europa League, but the team from the eternal city was beaten by record winners Sevilla.
Only lost one of their last 26 European home games
Now the three-time Italian champions are looking to launch a new assault in the Europa League in the 2023/24 season. The course for wintering in the competition has already been set. On the first matchday, the Giallorossi recorded a 2-1 away win at Sheriff Tiraspol, which they now want to build on at home in the Stadio Olimpico.
The home advantage alone means that betting on a home win for the Mourinho team against Servette Geneva is extremely well placed. La Lupa have lost only one of their last 26 European games at home (19 wins, six draws).
Romelu Lukaku has scored every time in the last twelve Europa League games
On Sunday, the Giallorossi not only celebrated a successful dress rehearsal with a 2-0 victory over the in-form promoted Frosinone, but also made up some ground in the domestic Serie A after a weak start with only one win from the first six league games (two draws, three defeats).
In the Europa League, the club from the eternal city will also rely on its life insurance Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian has not only scored three times in league action, but has also scored at least one goal in his last twelve appearances in the Europa League without exception.
Predicted line-up of AS Roma:
AS Roma (Expected line-up) 3-4-3
Servette Geneva – Statistics & current form
Servette Geneva is still the third most successful team in Switzerland behind record champions Grasshoppers and FC Basel with 17 national championship titles. In recent years, however, there has not been much to see from the Grenats.
The 2022/23 season, however, saw the Welsh side finish runners-up once again, which also opened the door to the major European competitions once more. In the Champions League qualifiers, however, the team from Lac Léman was defeated by Glasgow Rangers after defeating Genk and had to make do with the Europa League.
The third Swiss debutant to start with two losses?
Here coach René Weiler’s side failed to make their Group G debut in a 2-0 defeat to Slavia Prague. The Romands could now become the third Swiss team after Lausanne-Sport (2010/11) and Lugano (2017/18) to lose their first two competitive matches in the Europa League group stage.
In view of the Giallorossi’s strong home record, there is not much to suggest that AS Roma will win a point against Servette Geneva. To make matters worse, the Grenats are not really in good form going into this game, although at least their dress rehearsal against Lausanne on Saturday resulted in a 2-1 home win.
Won only two of the nine league games in the Super League
However, if you disregard the 4-1 win at Bulle in the Swiss Cup, that 2-1 victory over Lausanne was the Welsh side’s only competitive win in their last six games (one draw, four defeats). In the Super League, it was only the second win in nine games this season (four draws, three defeats).
All in all, the players from Lac Léman are only in eighth place in the table and are far away from another runner-up finish, let alone the title race. This is also due to their shaky defence, which has already conceded 15 goals in nine league games.
Predicted line-up of Servette Geneva:
Servette FC (Expected line-up) 4-4-2
AS Roma – Servette Geneva Direct comparison / H2H balance
There has not yet been a competitive international match between the two clubs. While the Genevois are even playing a Serie A representative for the very first time ever, the Giallorossi have won six of their previous seven European home games against a Swiss side. Only in the 2010/11 Champions League was there once a 1:3 defeat against FC Basel.
AS Roma – Servette Geneva Tip
In all form, the betting odds on AS Roma against Servette Geneva swing in the direction of the home side, who have lost just one of their last 26 European home games at the Stadio Olimpico (19 wins, six draws). This contrasts with the debutants from Switzerland, for whom things have not gone well at national level recently, nor in the first preliminary round match of the Europa League, which was lost 2-0 to Slavia Prague in front of their own fans. In total, the Grenats have three defeats in their last five competitive matches (one win, one draw).
A particular focus will be on Romelu Lukau, who has scored in his last twelve Europa League appearances and will certainly be eager to net at home against the Swiss. The prediction for AS Roma against Servette Geneva is that the Belgian will also score in this match.
