His victory in Miami, following his win at Indian Wells, has allowed Jannik to narrow the gap on the world No. 1. And in Monte Carlo…
The recently won Sunshine Double allows Jannik Sinner to close in on Carlos Alcaraz, with a real chance of overtaking him and thus returning to world No. 1 in the coming weeks. Perhaps as early as Monday, April 13, at the end of the Monte Carlo tournament. If the South Tyrolean wins his fourth Masters 1000 title in a row, no further calculations will be needed, and he will be the new king of the ATP rankings. But that’s not the only possible scenario.
In the rankings to be published today, Sinner will have 12,400 points next to his name, 1,190 fewer than Carlos Alcaraz, who remains at 13,590 points following his disastrous third-round exit in Miami at the hands of Sebastian Korda. Jannik will therefore arrive next week in Monte Carlo, the first Masters 1000 on clay, virtually just 190 points behind the Spaniard, given that Carlitos will lose the 1,000 points he earned in 2025. As mentioned, if he wins in the Principality, regardless of what Alcaraz does, Sinner will become world number one. If both reach the quarterfinals, Sinner would only need to advance one round further than the Spaniard to reclaim the top spot.
Will Alcaraz hold on?— If the overtaking attempt fails in Monte Carlo, it would likely only be postponed, given that Alcaraz has a mountain of points to defend on clay, including his victory in Rome, his triumph at Roland Garros, and his runner-up finish in Barcelona. Sinner does have to defend his runner-up finishes in Rome and Paris, but he still has 1,100 fewer points to defend than the star from Murcia between the Foro Italico and Roland Garros. The 1,000-point event in Madrid could also play a significant role, as neither player competed there in 2025.
