Will Wade knock MvG out again?
Only last weekend the two players met in the Nordic Darts Masters. Now the clash between Michael van Gerwen vs. James Wade will take place in the Premier League Play-offs. Though Wade won the last encounter the best bookmakers see Michael van Gerwen as favourite for the semi-final of the Play-Offs.
The Dutchman is even a co-favourite for this year’s title. Last year Michael van Gerwen failed in the play-offs in the Premier League. Surprising as the regular season in the Premier League, which was still played in league format at that time, “Mighty Mike” finished as the best player.
This year is the next attempt at the PL title for “MvG”. So far the 33 year old Dutchman has won the PDC Premier League five times in his career. Semi-final opponent James Wade on the other hand has won the Premier League only once in his whole professional career
Because Wade won only last weekend against Michael van Gerwen a surprise in the semi-finals of the PL Play-offs can’t be excluded. The odds on a surprise coup by the Englishman therefore have value and are definitely recommended for risk-savvy bettors.
Michael van Gerwen – Statistics & current form
Michael van Gerwen last won a Tour title just under a month ago. The Dutchman, who once was world number one of the PDC, defeated Dimitri van den Bergh in the final of the European Tour in Leverkusen. Since then “Mighty Mike” lagged behind the high expectations and had to fight with a little form slump.
In the last 15 matches Michael van Gerwen lost seven times. Two of the seven defeats came in the last three matches, among them not only the defeat against Michael Smith in the final of the US Open Masters but also the latest defeat against James Wade in the Nordic Darts Masters.
After a successful tournament opener against Kantele in which “MvG” with a 6:1 win created a clear balance of power the Dutchman suffered a bitter defeat in the quarterfinals against Wade. In the best-of-19 van Gerwen lost the match against the Englishman with 4:10.
Has MvG already digested the recent defeat?
In the defeat against Wade Michael van Gerwen had a commanding average of 90.74. But the Dutchman disappointed with a disastrous checkout rate of only 26.67%. Only four of 15 throws on the doubles were hit by Michael van Gerwen. In contrast Wade had a checkout rate of 40% and therefore walked off the stage as winner.
It was the third time Michael van Gerwen lost a match against James Wade this calendar year. But he already had seven wins against James Wade. The last one was in the US Masters just a week ago where “Mighty Mike” secured an unchallenged 8:3 win. The defeat at the Nordic Darts Masters was therefore all the more surprising.
Betting fans who want to bet on a win for “MvG” this time can pick up betting odds of 1.44 for tip 1 in the event of the Dutchman’s success in van Gerwen vs Wade.
James Wade – Statistics & Current Form
James Wade heads into the play-offs as the third best player in the 2022 Premier League. The Englishman has recorded a total of two tournament wins in 16 matchdays. Three times, on the other hand, “The Machine” failed to reach the final and thus only narrowly missed a tournament victory.
Wade played a total of 28 matches in the Premier League, with 15 wins and 13 defeats for the 39-year-old. Wade had an average of 94,36 over the 28 matches and was statistically the player with the third best scoring. On the other hand, Wade impressed with a sensational checkout rate of 44% – the best value in the Premier League.
If this continues, Wade is definitely a secret favourite for this year’s Premier League title. Last weekend the Englishman defeated Madars Razma and Michael van Gerwen in the Nordic Darts Masters. Wade only failed against Gary Anderson and was eliminated in the semi-finals.
Will he win the first PL title since 2009?
James Wade is back in the Premier League play-offs for the first time since 2019. Last year, “The Machine” missed out on making the play-offs, finishing “only” sixth. The result was by no means surprising; after all, Wade had only made the play-offs in six of his eleven PL appearances.
The last time “The Machine” won the PL title was in 2009. It is therefore not at all surprising that the Englishman is classified as an underdog in the four-team tournament in Berlin. In the event of James Wade’s success, betting odds in the region of the 6.00 mark will be paid out on the Premier League final in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Despite these odds, we do not recommend betting on the underdog in Michael van Gerwen vs James Wade.
If you take a look at the recent record on the tour, a title coup by Wade would be more than surprising. In his last nine matches, The Machine has lost six times.
Van Gerwen – Wade Direct comparison / H2H
The two players have met nine times this calendar year. Michael van Gerwen won a total of six of the nine matches. James Wade walked away victorious three times, including the most recent match against “MvG”, which the Englishman won 10:4. Before that “Mighty Mike” celebrated two wins in a row against James Wade.
Michael van Gerwen – James Wade Tip
Michael van Gerwen has already won the Premier League five times in his current career. It is therefore not at all surprising that the Dutchman is rated as a co-favourite for this year’s title despite a recent slump in form. If the bookmakers have their way, a final between Clayton and “MvG” is obvious.
But the semi-final will not be a walk in the park for the former world number one of the PDC. Opponent James Wade already gained some confidence last weekend and won the last match against Michael van Gerwen with 10:4 in the Nordic Darts Masters.
For Wade it was already the third win against “MvG” this calendar year. However, the Englishman has lost six of the last nine matches against “Mighty Mike”. We expect another defeat for Wade on Monday evening and place our bet on van Gerwen vs. Wade at attractive odds on a -3.5 HC win for the Dutch favourite.
