The euphoria surrounding the German national team at the home European Championship is still very high, but the German handball team has already suffered a few setbacks that have dampened their spirits. The semi-finals are still within reach, but not by their own efforts. France lead this group with 6:0 points and will most likely advance to the semi-finals. The Olympic champions are not the team that the DHB men have to orient themselves towards. Germany too static in positional play

Germany has a young team with a lot of individual class that will continue to grow. But that’s exactly what the successes of the last few games are based on. The problem, however, is that Alfred Gislason’s team hardly scores any easy goals. Especially in positional play, the finishes are rarely set up well. The game seems static at times. And because they can’t always rely on the shots of Juri Knorr or Julian Köster, they now have their backs to the wall

If the axis around Andreas Wolff in goal, Julian Köster, captain Johannes Golla and Juri Knorr, who has been suffering from health problems recently, works on Monday, then we are confident and would mainly look at the odds on a German victory in the duel between Germany and Hungary. However, it would certainly not be a disadvantage if the outfield players could also make their mark on the game and the responsibility could be spread over several shoulders.

That didn’t work against Austria. Austria were the better team for 60 minutes and actually had the better keeper on the night. It was only in the final ten minutes that the DHB men showed the final bite, not allowing the Alpine republic to score a single goal and turning 18:22 into 22:22. In the final second, they could even have won the game while short-handed, but that would probably have been far too much.

Hungary – Statistics & current form

Hungary are always a candidate to be among the frontrunners at major handball championships. They suffered a bitter setback two years ago when they failed to reach the preliminary round at their home European Championships. At last year’s World Championship, they were able to make up for this by reaching the quarter-finals and if everything goes perfectly, they might even make it to the semi-finals this year

Won four out of five matches at the EURO

The Hungarians have won six of their last eight international matches. Their record at the EURO in Germany is also impressive. Four wins in five matches. Only the somewhat unexpected defeat against Austria spoiled the overall impression a little. These results show that you may have to be a little cautious when predicting a German success between Germany and Hungary

The Magyars will certainly do everything they can to silence the Lanxess Arena and claim victory, as Chema Rodriguez’s team will face the seemingly overpowering French on the final matchday. So if they fail to pick up at least one point against Germany on Monday, the Hungarians will hardly make it into the medal round.

On Saturday, the Magyars were the clear underdogs in their clash against Croatia, at least according to the betting odds. The lead changed back and forth and it was an extremely even game until 25:25. However, the Hungarians had more to play for in the final phase and won 29:26 in the end, thanks in particular to seven goals from Bence Imre.

Germany – Hungary head-to-head comparison / H2H result

A handball match between Germany and Hungary can certainly be described as a classic. After all, the two nations faced each other for the first time back in 1958. To date, they have played 62 matches. In a head-to-head comparison, the German team is clearly ahead. After wins, the score is 34:17 in favor of the German men. Eleven other encounters ended in a draw.

There have been no really noteworthy winning streaks in recent years. However, Hungary have only won one of their last seven matches against Germany, namely in the preliminary round of the 2021 European Championship in Egypt. The last two encounters ever took place in March 2022 in two consecutive test matches. The first was a 31:31 draw in Gummersbach, followed by a narrow 30:29 victory for the German team in Kassel the next day.

The Lanxess Arena in Cologne should continue to be the X-factor for the German men. The DHB men have yet to lose in this arena. But that alone will not be enough on Monday. If the Eagles are to keep flying, they will need a win against the Magyars. Either this pressure will boost their performance, or the dream of the semi-finals will be over after this match.

Germany have certainly not been fully convincing against Iceland and Austria recently, but there are enough positive aspects to be optimistic. After all, Alfred Gislason’s team have only lost one of their last ten international matches, despite the problems in positional play that have been mentioned.
