Last stumbling block on the way to the double
Crunch time is also becoming ever more tangible in handball. The titles are being awarded and the world’s best handball team is right in the middle of it all. In our Flensburg-Handewitt vs Magdeburg betting tip, we check whether SCM will take the next step towards the championship after their triumph in the DHB Cup, or whether the northern Germans will bring a whole new spice to the title race in the Handball Bundesliga with a home win
We’ll start with the Flensburg team when looking at this encounter. For Nicolej Krickau’s team, there is basically nothing left to play for in the Bundesliga. After 27 games, the score is 42:12. That means the SG has six points more than Magdeburg and five more than Füchse Berlin. If things don’t get out of hand in the final spurt, Flensburg and old rivals THW Kiel will be battling it out for third and fourth place.
Magdeburg, on the other hand, are aiming for the double. Bennet Wiegert’s team currently has six minus points. The Füchse Berlin are at the top with one game more, but also one minus point more. The team from Anhalt can move past them with a win on Friday. In fact, the odds suggest that the prediction between Flensburg and Magdeburg should be a home win
However, we are going the opposite way. In our opinion, the new cup winners should be the favorites, especially as there is much more at stake for SCM. Of course, Flensburg don’t want to let the butter be taken off their bread in their own arena, but we would rather bet on an away win with a Bwin voucher
Flensburg-Handewitt – Statistics & current form
Before the season, SG Flensburg-Handewitt was considered a team that would play for all titles. While this is not entirely far-fetched, Nicolej Krickau’s team has not taken the final step in either the Bundesliga or the DHB Cup. It will probably only be enough to finish third in the championship. There will therefore be no comeback in the Champions League
Flensburg-Handewitt unbeaten at home
The team suffered a somewhat unexpected defeat in the semi-finals of the DHB Cup against MT Melsungen last weekend. The next title chance is gone. At least they managed to beat Bundesliga leaders Füchse Berlin in the match for third place, meaning that Flensburg will not have to play in the cup competition until the round of 16 in the coming season, but that should only be a small consolation
In the final weeks of the season, the focus is now supposedly fully on the European League in order to at least be able to take home a title. The two quarter-final games against Swedish representative IK Sävehof will take place this month. Overall, the team’s form is very presentable. Of their last 14 competitive games, the northerners have only lost the cup semi-final against Melsungen.
They have yet to lose at home this season. Only Füchse Berlin have taken a point from the Campushalle in the Bundesliga. It is therefore perhaps not so strange that the odds on a home win between Flensburg-Handewitt and Magdeburg are lower. However, Nicolej Krickau will still have to do without Kay Smits. There is also a question mark over Emil Jakobsen and Jim Gottfridsson.
Predicted line-up of Flensburg-Handewitt:
Buric, K. Möller – Blagotinsek, Czertowicz, Einarsson, Golla, Gottfridsson, Hansen, Horgen, Jörgensen, Mensah, L. Möller, Pedersen, Pytlick, Zivkovic – Coach: Krickau
Magdeburg – Statistics & current form
It could still be an incredibly successful season for SC Magdeburg, if the successes to date are anything to go by. At the end of last year, Bennet Wiegert’s team won its first title with the IHF Super Globe. Last weekend, the DHB Cup was added as the second trophy and two more may not be ready for collection, but are definitely within reach
Two trophies are still waiting
In the Champions League, the quarter-finals against Polish representative Kielce are on the agenda. If Magdeburg prevail there, they will also reach the Final Four in this competition, again in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. On Friday, however, the focus will be solely on the Bundesliga, where the team from Anhalt could potentially make a preliminary decision in the title race
Flensburg is basically the last major stumbling block on the way to the championship. Magdeburg could certainly slip up in the next six games, but the chances of dropping points against mediocrity and the bottom of the table are rather slim. That’s why we’re making a commitment here. Ahead of the kick-off between Flensburg-Handewitt and Magdeburg, we dare to predict that the visitors will also be champions in a few weeks’ time with an away win in the Campushalle.
SCM have won their last eleven games. In terms of personnel, things could hardly look better. All players are fit and ready for action. However, keeper Nikola Portner is missing, having been suspended for a doping offense. The 39-year-old Swede Mikael Aggefors has been reactivated as backup for Sergey Hernandez.
Predicted line-up of Magdeburg:
Hernandez, Aggefors – Bergendahl, Chrapkowski, Claar, Damgaard, Hornke, Kristjansson, Lagergren, Magnusson, Mertens, Musche, O’Sullivan, Saugstrup, Pettersson, Smarason – Coach: Wiegert
Flensburg-Handewitt – Magdeburg head-to-head comparison / H2H record
For years, SG Flensburg-Handewitt and SC Magdeburg have always been a top match in the German Handball League. To date, there have been a total of 73 meetings between the two top German teams. The direct comparison favors the northern Germans with a 39:30 win. Four encounters have ended in a draw. SCM’s last away win in the Campushalle came in the DHB Cup in October 2018.
There is no notable series between these two teams. However, the Anhalt side won the last two duels. Accordingly, Magdeburg also won the first leg in the current season in its own arena by 31:29. Omar Ingi Magnusson was the match-winner for SCM. Kay Smits impressed for Flensburg on his return to his old stomping ground
Flensburg-Handewitt – Magdeburg tip
This could be the decisive match for the German championship, at least for SC Magdeburg. Flensburg are already out of the title race. With a home win on Friday, however, the North Germans could give the leaders Füchse Berlin a helping hand. The odds tend to show a slight advantage for the home side.
There are reasons for that, as the SG are completely unbeaten at home this season and have not lost to Magdeburg in the Campushalle since 2018. In addition, Nicolej Krickau’s side have only suffered one defeat in their last 14 competitive games. Nevertheless, we would not bet on a home win in the Bet365 app in the duel between Flensburg-Handewitt and Magdeburg
This is mainly due to the fact that the visitors have really embraced the crunch time of the season. They have won eleven of their last eleven competitive matches. Among other things, the team from Anhalt lifted the DHB Cup last week with victories over Füchse Berlin and Melsungen. We think that Bennet Wiegert’s team will continue their winning streak in this tough away game and have decided to play the betting odds on an away win between Flensburg-Handewitt and Magdeburg
