An internal restructuring has been announced ahead of next year. The Briton will continue to lead the technical department, while Cowell will take on a new role.
Adrian Newey will be Aston Martin’s new Team Principal from 2026. The Briton will take over from Andy Cowell, who will assume the role of Chief Strategy Officer. The announcement was made by Lawrence Stroll’s team in a statement. The aim is to give Newey an increasingly central role, as he will also have technical responsibilities in the development of the car, much like Mattia Binotto previously did at Ferrari.
The partnership between Newey and Aston Martin began on September 10, 2024, with his appointment as managing technical partner and shareholder of the team. However, the Briton actually started work on March 1, 2025, having agreed to remain at Red Bull to complete his work on the RB17 Hypercar. Since his arrival, he has been involved in the development of the 2026 single-seater, on which high hopes are pinned due to the regulatory change. Binotto had a similar role to Newey at Ferrari when he was appointed Team Principal in 2019, a position he held until 2022, while continuing to oversee the technical department.

The words of the protagonists— For the first time, Newey will take on the role of Team Principal in Formula 1. “Over the last nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our team,” commented the Briton. “I am looking forward to taking on this additional role as we prepare for 2026, a completely new season. Andy’s role, focused on integrating the engine with our three key partners, will be crucial.“ Stroll added that ”Cowell has been a great leader this year. He has focused on building a world-class team, promoting a culture that puts the race car at the center of everything. This change in leadership is a shared decision in the best interests of the team. We look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role as Chief Strategy Officer. I am also delighted that Newey is taking on the role of Team Principal, so he can fully leverage his creativity and technical expertise. These changes will ensure that the team maximizes its collective capabilities.”
